I'm getting tempted to do the same. I think we've had less than 5 days below zero since January out here in Brooks. It's pretty unbelievable.

yeah i bought new winter tires for my car this season, thinking its going to snow a lot.. turns out the mountains like to keep all the snow in BC...

After about 3 months of searching I finally picked up an 04 5sp XT.

Right now it's got a full invidia 3in TBE with a catless downpipe, running a cobb stage 2 tune, and is sitting on coilovers.

Next thing I have to do is swap the catless DP for a catted one so I don't overboost on the cobb tune. Then I'll work my way onto swapping the coilover suspension for wrx suspension to keep low but gain functionality, replacing the stock TMIC with a STI TMIC and a STI hood scoop, maybe a CAI (but more likely just a better filter in the stock airbox), a roof rack, and some kind of light bar/offroad light setup.

Sweet car and I love foresters but I don't get why so many of them lower and put offroad lights on them.

It's essentially a boxy impreza wagon body, with an STI engine, and a WRX turbo. It's lighter than the STI is stock and has better gearing. If you put it on a stiffer & lower suspension so you aren't body rolling all over the place then you're easily outperforming WRXs and can reach STI spec with a few simple bolt-ons.

I don't have as good of an explanation for the offroad lights. I'd use them on New England dirt roads and back roads in the mountains. Plus something about it being a forester I feel like the offroad lights keep it truu to it's roots.

Why don't you just get it tuned for the catless DP? Your car will run better than any OTS tune.

This was the original plan, but the cost difference between swapping DPs and getting a custom tune is too much. I'll save $400-$500 swapping DPs rather than tuning. The OTS tune is mapped for a catted 3in TBE so it will run fine for the time being. A custom tune can be arranged later when the rest of my planned mods (TMIC, intake, etc..) are completed. (Also saving me $$ having to get a retune).

Another reason I went with a forester is that it's (a little more) incognito than other subies. Having it catless is illegal on a federal level, and while it's unlikely the EPA is going to catch me, I don't want a $10,000 fine (not exaggerating) or hassle from law enforcement for something so silly. A buddy of mine had a stage 2+ WRX and the sound difference when it was catted to when he went catless was almost unnoticeable. And honestly, catless really doesn't matter much until you're pushing 350+ at the wheels, which is not the plan for my DD haha.

That was the original plan. But after further thought I decided to swap to catted. Catless is illegal on a federal level, and while I doubt the EPA will hunt me down or catch me, I don't want to pay a $10,000 fine (not exaggerating). And if I were to come to a situation where I'm being hassled by law enforcement I'd rather be able to argue that my car is "legal."

The more influential reason is I'll save $400-$500 by swapping DPs rather than getting a custom tune. I should be able to sell my catless one for close to what I can get a catted one for. Catless really doesn't make a difference anyways until you are pushing 350+ hp at the wheels, and that's not the plan for my DD.

The cobb OTS tune is mapped for a catted TBE. It will run perfectly once I swap DPs. A custom tune can be arranged later when I have the rest of my planned mods competed. That way I wont have to pay for a retune once I get there.

You may fail stage emmissions tests without a cat as well.

It is far from an sti engine when it is stock. Only the case halves are the same.

Same block, same part numbers.

The only difference under the hood of an FXT and an STI is the ECU, up pipe, TMIC, and turbo.

Yesss. I am so happy you challenged me on this. I worked in a subaru performance shop for the last 3 years. I still work in the industry tuning cars independently. I have a factory five 818 that I have built, as well as built the motor on. Which happened to come out of an 06 wrx....aka ej255. Same motor you have.

First off. The case halve part number may be the same...because like I said, it is the same case halves. Shit even the same crank! The biggest difference is in the heads. Those heads don't flow as much as STI Ej257 heads. The valvetrain is significantly weaker as well. Stock springs on ej255 can't go much past 7200 at max. Otherwise you will float a valve. As well the actual valves themselves are different, (mostly the sodium content in them). That being said. ej257 heads, with a better flowing combustion chamber, stiffer springs, more aggressive cam lobe profile, can rev to about 7600rpm max. I take them to 7300rpm all day long safely, and have never floated a valve. I have seen plenty float on the ej255's though....

And to correct you even further, the up-pipe is actually the same as the sti's on certain years. The ecu isn't far off but is close. The 04 fxt ecus can actually be made to work with 04 sti, and vice versa.

I am not in the industry, so I'd like to believe what you're saying is true. But everything I'm reading elsewhere is going against your point. You are correct in newer 06+ FXTs having the ej255, but from what I've researched the 04-05 XTs have the ej257. Some sources say the 04 XT is stamped as an ej255 but it's exactly the same as the 04-06 STi ej257, stating that Subaru labeled it that way just for marketing reasons (big mom wagon doesn't look the same as the STi racecar.)

That's being said. I actually rebuilt the motor on my dad's 04 FXT. Did all the valve work and clearancing, bucket work, etc. The valves and Springs are most definitely not the same. The heads are even stamped different.d25 instead of b25 heads. Which mean they flow different.

Just put this wicked tube bumper on my 1997 Tacoma!.

2.7l 4 cyl

5 speed manual

Single cab, which is not kind to tall people!

I was really cheap, crawls like a beast and can be fixed with duct tape and a hammer. It's given me almost no problems in the year I've owned it. I'm pretty much in love

All I gotta say about stis is they sound nice but. Wait for it. Ring land failure. I'll stick with my 4g63 any day of the week

This subie is the best ive ever seen, what year/model??

1992 Loyale Wagon. If only someone made a vehicle this good still. 4wd/2wd on demand, awesome mileage, tons of room. Swap any parts you want easily. 6'6" bed in the back. killer winter vehicle. If you start searching them, prepare to have your mind blown.

anyone into detailing? Looking into picking up a buffer to do some paint correction. What is the go to brand and what should I look for?

Also products for said paint correction?

Anyone ever reclear coat carbon fiber?

lucky bastard, unlike many I love narrow body hatch's

As far as I know and hear their not very good though, at least the 2008 ones were I believe.

I think as long as its stock youre fine, it was the 08 model just had 40 less hp than these ones. Good luck with the purchase, im jelly

09 saw a number of great changes you can read into on wikipedia, but the important bit is more power. 10 saw the flared fenders. IMHO I would avoid 08, but 09+ is great. With the 09 you could put in a front mount intercoooler and eliminate the hood scoop for that sleeper look..

yep, like the first gen 08 ones were ass, the hatches literally literally are an impreza with sporty seats and a hood scoop and as much hp as a stock bugeye wrx.
