Newschoolers just died

With the sale, I am sure NS will go in a downward spiral. Shit, I would have sold it too. Props for them making the money. Even if they still have 'control', decisions will go to Studio 411's bottom line, which doesn't align with the users. You can all hate, but NS won't be the same after little things pile up into one big shitstorm.

If NS version 2.0 gets made, let me be the business man and I will sell that to Studio 411 too. The NS administration can spin this sale all they want, but at the end of the day they are lighting their Swishers with hundreds.

it won't die but the parent company will make its "reccomendations" on what to do to improve it. at the end of the day, all partnerships start out like a new relationship. in 6 months we will know more about the direction the site goes in because that is the timeframe that they will start assessing the success of it. these guys could let ns do their thing for a while, we'll see...

even if that IS the case, don't you think they fucking deserve it? They have worked their ass of for years to just keep this going. I hope those guys made some good money in the sale. They final will get something in return for all the work they do to keep the site up and going.

NS is going to get better, have more funding, and the people working their ass off to keep it going may (hopefully) finally get the payments they deserve.

Whats the problem?

But the way that NS is run now and the way the users like it, isn't the most profitable. By the end even people in North Korea will have more freedom than NS users.

Yes, they are still true to themselves. I would still drink Black Velvet if I was a billionaire. I definetly would have sold out too, I can't fault them for that. I am wondering what the final sale price was, high five figures, low six figures? Considering the demographics and time spent by a user, it seems pretty profitable to the new owners. NS will fall like snowblading, but something else will take it's place. If I had a website to plug, I would plug it here. But, I don't, so go to www.arbys.com

exactly, it will be a marketing machine for the "partner" companies and will steer influence vs the promoting free thought.

i am happy the guys got a paycheck though, they have worked hard.

Deffinitely not going to happen. Ns is still going to be run by the same people. Look at line skis Bought by K2, and it seems like they are only getting better. Its going to take time for everything to fall into place but ns isn't going anywhere, and they didn't sell out.

Nothing but good is going to come from this. Lets have a look at what else Studio411 controls.... All really legit with lots of respect from their respective sports. I think it's one of the best case scinerios that NS could've fallen into.

Atleast were not owned by Betty Crocker or something. I think only positive things can happen from this.

I also have enough trust in the guys running the show to not sell out for lots of money, but for the bettering of this site. I know they did this for that reason, and from what they've told us, they are being left with near full control for the exact reasoning you are mad, because Studio411 understands people like us hate selling out, and realize that changing this site would ruin what it is. So there, take that for what it is and see that this is only going to be good for us.

How will it die? Wilkl it become mainstream or something? Go to your mountain, approach any newschool freeskier and chances are they have not only heard of NS, but have an account and contribute to it. And even if idiots start joinng and fucking up threads, there will still be cults for the oldschool NSers, where we can posts hot girl pictures, throw around swears and racial slurs, and make links to drug references and stuff. The new aquisition will kill the threads a bit I think, mods will have to crack down, but the new skiing footage availible and all the coverage of atheletes, events, and equipment will be uncomprimised.

I DONT THINK YOU GET IT...

NEWSCHOOLERS WILL BE 100 TIMES BETTER...IF THE MODS HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL IT SURE AS HELL WILL BE...JUST think it is IF THE MODS WON THE LOTTERY...THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO LOOK AT IT...MONEY WAS AN ISSUE...NOT ANY MORE

NSTV WILL RULE

EVERYTHING WILL RULE

NO DOUBT

If nothing is going to change, why did Studio411 and its parent company buy NS? A few Studio411 ads around the site wouldn't be worth the purchasing of NS. Something is going to change.

It's the fear that change is going to come in the form of popups and commercials and censoring that scares people. And there's the knowledge that NS is going to get bigger rapidly. Bigger = cool new developments, but there's just something nice about a personal underground website where everybody knows everybody else.

I have high hopes for the future of NS, and I hope this acquisition brings great things for freeskiing.

If you noticed...the update said that studio411 won't rules of NS or whatnot. What it's doing is basically providing a whole new cash flow into the NS system.

It'll be a good thing. Don't fret about being "core."

Who are you to talk??

Say goodbye to the I hate MSP threads...Other then that i doubt its gunna effect much in the fourms. At most i can see 411 having mods delete the negitive threads about their company...other then that its gunna make NS 10x better

And yes, they will be providing cash flow. But why does anyone lend cash? They look for a return on the investment. As Holte pointed out, they did not purchase it for banner ads. That is a poor use of investment capital. They could have bought banner ads for much less.

This is about controling media. It is about steering marketing and brand perception. This is much bigger than "giving these guys some cash to operate with". They need to generate revenue to get a good return on the money they shelled out and make no mistake about it, if the current directors of NS aren't producing the results they want, they will step in. If you think the mods are particular now, just wait until one of the parent company's "partners" are being criticized.

I am happy for the guys who worked hard on creating this great e-community that is NS and they deserve their money. They did not "sell out", they are getting a cut of what they deserve. But make no mistake about it, things will change. To those that disagree, I hope I am wrong.

Until I am under a contract by 411, or being paid, I will not delete a thread for their sake, ever.

radoripper has a good point, 411 is like any other company and will expect a return on their investment, it might be with the ads, but it will probably be done by putting their company into the site to generate business for their company so that they will see a return on their "investment"

I think they're going to be looking for more revanue along the NSTV lines, seeing as that is what the company does... media, more specifically video. The second they try to use the forums for propaganda, you know it'll be the begining of a shit show with all the kids on here revolting. I think they know this though.

Holte, Radioripper, you don't think investors buy the controlling interest in a website which is at the center of a growing segment of an industry and just wait for that industry to increase its share? Because NS' value has skyrocketed over the past 2 years, and there was no corporate influence involved in that. Hypothetical situation: you take a calculated and limited risk buying into a site for what to your company amounts to peanuts, you let people who've been running it for years successfully continue to do so, and wait for your acquisition's value to increase along with the market it represents and serves uniquely. Doesn't sound like a good idea to you?

i agree to some extent. the asset's natural appreciation over the next few years could be enough to satisfy some. but not enough to combat the cash outlay (that i hope the guys from ns received) to buy the company and then the amount of money they are going to pump into this thing to take it to the "next level".

now these guys have been running this site successfully over the past few years, but they will need to generate more revenue to cover the additional expenses associated with the next level site we are gratefully awaiting.

they are buying a media outlet and access to a large audience that is loyal to this brand. i guess i am just curious to see what is going to happen.

Believe me everything you're talking about is correct, but you've just got the wrong angle on it.

Here's how it works in the world of internet sites: Traffic=advertising dollars. The more traffic you have, the more ad dollars you can get. NS is great at getting ad dollars from "endemic" (look it up on google) sponsors currently. We kill it, and have been recieving tonnes of support from them. In terms of that stuff, we'll just continue doing what we do and be fine with it.

What you're all wondering is where the influx of cash gets covered? Well here it is... yes NS is going to have a corporate ad or two from time to time now. Yes you may have to bear the site of a Toyota ad or maybe Gillette or something. I know it might be hard, but think about it this way:

Studio 411 (moreso Sportnet and Wasserman) owns a whole bunch of websites. Surf, Skate, Moto X, Snowboarding. They also have shitloads of video titles in all of these sports. What NS becomes is a small part of a larger ad package that can be sold to corporate sponsors. Its the same shit as when corporate sponsors put on most of the major ski contests in our sport. Corporate ad packages don't care about some small fry bullshit traffic like NS, they want big numbers. A company like WMG/411 recognizes what small factions of the sport needs to thrive and grow and provide that. THey ensure that each site keeps core to their sport, and does cool shit for them. Then, having those numbers they can sell it to corporate sponsors overall, alongside everything else they do as one massive package.

So they're not interested in who we're hating on as a community, they're interested in the fact that we're here, we're healthy and we're having fun. If people leave this website, it becomes useless! So yes we will be able to continue on as we have been.

Of course things will change, but things change every year with us! We'll grow, there will be punters, but we'll implement features and new cults that seek to give core members somewhere to hide from the masses. Features will improve, and we can use creative advertising methods to get mre money out of the industry instead of just doing stupid shit like popups. Popups would be the worst business move ever for us... I mean think about team/park updates! NS makes probably 70% of its revenue from those, and aren't they incredibly entertaining?

All we have to do is come up with cool ad spots. They don't care how we make the money as long as we make it, and the industry is looking to support us. That partnered with the fact that we can rock a couple of corporate ads and we're stoked!

The main idea behind not being able to make up the massive influx of resources, is that now we're able to roll the dice. Yeah we could have done this on our own, but we'd have had to take out a massive loan and hope for the best. This way they've even given us the leniancy to not make money the first year we're under them! (Though I'm not going to let that happen because that would mean I'm a bad sales guy!)

Things might change yes... but you know what? It was high time to make a move forwards. This was our opportunity and we jumped on it. I hate nothing more in this life than people who don't jump on opportunities just because they're worried that it will fail. Too many good ideas die for just that reason.

Trust me, trust our team, and trust our community that we can not only survive, but flourish through this.

oooohh. I gotcha. I just didn't know the bigger picture of how the

internet advertising business works. Props to all the admins for

pulling the trigger on this deal. Can't wait to see the future

developments!

The trick is to block all ads..I dont see any of the NS adds or sponsors as is...

so i am happy and when they come they should be put somehwer ethat wont be noticable..like when you go into a thread you scoll down to the bottom but there is more scorll..

do it down there

where no one cares

if that made sense

I think it will just take sometime to realize how big of an opportunity this is. At first I was a little "eh ok, this might be good" but now I'm way stoked, NS isn't selling out it's just gonna blow the fuck up. It's funny how people wanted NS to get big so they could make clothing etc. But now that NS will have a chance to do some sick things people are getting mad because they think were selling out. I think the only way NS could of sold out is if they let totally different run this site and control all the aspects of it. But it's gonna be so much better in time I can't wait.

Am i the only one reminded of Out Cold:

I was there. Yeah, it was called the '80s. Ford was President, Nixon was in the White House and FDR was running this country into the ground. I was bummin' in a hole-in-a-wall town in what is now called Utah. Some fella from Colorado shows up, starts making so called "improvements", right? Before we knew what hit us, the streets are running with late'. It got so bad that a fella that liked to, you know... smoke a little grass or drink a little ripple. Crow like a rooster, maybe challenge the mayor's son to a gentlemen's duel, was "uncouth, against God." More like bad real estate values. So we had to go!

(the part about the new guy making improvements?)

411 studios isnt some lame company, they work with some good names in skiing and are looking make NS better, no worries, they are here to pay for things NS cant afford
