Newschoolers Digital Magazine

I just read it cover to cover and I can't think of any criticisms. Good writing, great photos and not too many ads. Great work NS!

I have one thing you could do to make this better and more accessible: write it up in HTML5 so mobile browsers, iPhones and iPads alike can view it the the way it was intended to be, as these outlets cannot use Flash Player properly.

I think that's the best way you could go with this.

only have the time to read the first few pages right now, but I like what I see so far. I enjoyed reading the different athletes perspectives on social media and how it's changing the game. very on tap with what's going on currently in the world outside of our little sport. interesting how twall said it's hard to distinguish tom the brand v. tom the person.

SO many threads about this, but I'll add something here as well.

I read some more yesterday and so far my only complaints involve minor typos (but I am a prick about typos, so no sweat). I'll give a full run down of brutal commentary in a week or two (sorry, I'm just really busy so no promises!) although I don't really see it actually being brutal. In other words, great work so far - the mag has helped get me STOKED for BC in a week. SO STOKED!

Personally I think that simply hacking it together in HTML5 isn't the right way to go for iPhones and iPads. If we're going to do that, then I want it to be a full-on professional app.

Otherwise, we wouldn't have gotten the same quality of presentation... which flash still dominates. Its only the iPhone and iPad which don't use flash, and the number of users who go to newschoolers on those devices is still pretty low.

We actually specifically made the decision to go with flash because of this. HTM5 isn't there yet, and we didn't have the resources to do a proper apple app.

However mark my words - thats where this is eventually going.

Great, once HTML5 gets there you should pretty much redo the whole site, as the amount of failed embeds is staggering and annoying.

Well there is one video, and we're certainly hoping to have more.

If you read the .pdf format though the video wouldn't have worked.

Again - its the early days so not everything will be perfect. This is just a solid starting point anyways. :)

Yay. It was fun. Gave it about 15 mins of my time. The JF interview was a nice one for us old folks.

I was a little wary at first but it turned out to be really well done.great articles, pics and interviews. Its cool how they embed videos into it as well.

Looks sick guys. Love the format and the content really stands out as stuff I enjoyed reading.
Quick note, The TNF Gonzo Jacket isn't Gore-Tex XCR. Its a 2L Hyvent shell.

hate being the debbie downer, but the guy on the cover is doing a trick over a grave.
kinda bothers me that he stomped over dead bodies.

That was rad as fuck, thanks for putting it together. I pretty much read that whole interview.

Tip for future interviews though: Stop talking about halfpipe in the olympics, alot more in life to talk about

That was an awesome read! Would there be a possible way to get some of the shots as posters in the NS shop or something? I also hugely enjoyed the involvment of NS members will this become a more regular thing in the magazine?

Stoked on TJs article, well written and insightful. Get that shit from Jossi out of there though; I love watching him ski but proselytizing has no place in a ski magazine. I don't care if he never actually said "Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior yet?", when you are a sponsored athlete getting paid because you influence little kids, talking about religion in a ski magazine saying "there is no doubt in my mind that [my skiing success has] been a result of the big guy upstairs" is way too much.

Are you really complaining about this?

Like you said, there wasn't one quote in there trying to convert the hearts & minds of the average NS kid; it was just a piece about what Faith & Jesus has meant to Jossi. I really hope I'm tired and I missed your blatant sarcasm. Yes, I suppose it'd be better if Jossi were extolling the virtues of smoking pot hourly, keeping your tall tee tall and afterbangs fresh.

I wasn't aware that the only topics available for discussion were weed, tall tees and Jesus. All I am saying is that I don't think "faith and Jesus" have any place in skiing magazines, just as I would say the same about an abortion rant or fiscal monetary policy debate. The entire reason that Jossi was in that magazine in the first place was to influence the "hearts and minds" of NS kids, so when he uses the magazine as a pulpit, I take issue.
Oh, and by the way, this time, in the first sentence, I was being sarcastic.

First one was wayyyy better. i get where they were going with the whole athlete thing, but i didnt really work for me. and i thought the formating sucked. like, really sucked. some constructive critisism:

-more pictures: the eye candy was weak except for the cover pic. 99% of that was lifestyle shots, shots of an empty park, and wording. if i wanted all reading i wouldve bought a book. add a photo section or something, maybe get people to submit photos and you pick the best one, i dunno. people say the ns photo section is dead, than revive it with the mag.

-some of the athletes are pretty bad writers. thats why there is usually a middleman. some reminded me of a grade 8 english essay.

-i dont think the jossi article should be in there, just because its exclusive. if an atheist or someone jewish opens the mag, theyre not gonna give two shits if jossi feels god when skis or not. props to jossi for putting that out there tho.

-the formatting and layout was absolute shit in my opinion. honestly, the "letter to the editor" page was all white with black text. how regular and boring is that. it looked like my history homework, not a ski magazine. and it needs more photos, like i already said. something to catch the readers attention if they are just flipping through.

-the park section was even worse in terms of formatting. paragraph one side, picture on the other. repeat. cmon, get some photos of people hitting the features in there. the park stuff was well written tho, just needs some better presentation.

my 2 cents. looking foreward to see what theyll do for the next one!

I thought Schmuck's article was interesting.
I agree that ski media is all about the athletes. But, I think that's what causes ski media to be so bland and boring. Outside of NS, nobody really cares what the athletes are up to. We're all skiers, and it's the feeling that skiing gives us that makes it so compelling. When I pick up a ski magazine, I want to see and read stuff that reminds me of how much fun it is to be in the park or in the backcountry. I could care less about the latest pro-gossip.
That said, the issue wasn't really pro gossip and I thought it was interesting. It would have been nice to have a little more eye candy, though.

That's actually not why it was in there. I asked Jossi if he would be interested in writing an article on that subject, as it's a big part of who he is, and a story that's never really been told or touched by other ski media...so that's exactly why I wanted it. It's different, creates debate and not intended to be preachy whatsoever. It's simply him talking about something that means a lot to him in his life. And I think suggesting that someone is going to suddenly convert to Christianity just because Jossi talked about it in an article is a bit far-fetched and silly. Props to JW for being willing to share something so personal.

Thanks for the great feedback! And I totally agree with your points, which is why I said "ski media and many of our readers' interest in it, for the most part, is centered around athletes." Because it's definitely not all about that. The goal was just to do something a little different from the norm with this issue, so I hope you all enjoy it. Cheers!

The fact that it creates debate does not mean that it is appropriate for the medium of a ski magazine. Not that I am saying the two are equal, but an article where someone defends Al Qaeda would "create debate" as well, that doesn't make it proper subject matter. Something tells me that if someone wrote an article that said "and it was when I was cruising down the mountain that I first started to have this realization. It just hit me, there is no god. The conceptualization of a 'greater being' is merely a feeble, though misguided, attempt to grasp the overwhelming scale of the universe and accept the unknown.", then you wouldn't have printed it.
As, for the tangible effect that it has on the audience, it does not matter whether or not it "converts" anybody, merely that its existence serves to reinforce ideas ill-suited for skiing publication.

I'm no Evangelical...I'm Catholic but only go to Church when my girlfriend's parents asked me to accompany them during Easter. I say this so the argument that I'm foolhardily defending religion because I was baptized doesn't get in the way when I say that I think you're whole argument is purely based on intolerance. Again, maybe I'm missing this...to which you'll probably reply in a witty one liner like you did in the last retort, but you're coming across as completely theophobic. The piece was about Jossi and what his faith has meant to him; it's not waving a crucifix banner and saying "come join the flock." As for it's appropriateness? He wears got a crucifix on his helmet next to his Monster logo. The last paragraph could've easily have read:

"My relationship with Monster has been a huge part of my life and I have no doubts that it has helped get me to where I am today. I am very blessed..."

So if this was the normal run of the mill article and Jossi said that, no one would bat an eyelash at it, but you put Jesus in an article and you flip your shit. Why is it appropriate to talk about monetary sponsors than what is obviously a very important part of his life?

I think you've completely missed the point of the article and are just looking for something to spout of from your pulpit.

Stephen Hawking, simmer down.

First of all, I'll take the Stephen Hawking comment as a compliment. The dude is a genius who got his hot nurse to marry him despite the fact that he has almost no control over his body and she has to wipe his ass. The dude is clearly a baller.
Second, don't think that I am actually very upset about this. I will never be as emotionally involved in theological debates as theists are, because it is not that important to my identity. I merely object on principle, as any serious journalist, whether theistic or atheist, should as well.
Now, as for how advertising for Monster is different than advertising for Jesus, the difference is that Monster does not claim to be anything but a for-profit company that sells caffeine and sugar for exorbitant prices. Christianity's (and organized religions in general) business model on the other hand, is much more insidious in how they conduct business. They sell promises of happiness and the security of an afterlife, while simultaneously proclaiming their own benevolence and collecting immense wealth along the way. A valid religion should, by its own definition, need no additional promotion as it would self promote by providing "the one true path".
So, if Jossi wants to believe in Jesus, that's cool, do your thing. But, if your religion is indeed so great, others will follow without you publicly promoting it. Jossi can claim his religion is a "very personal thing", but when you do so in a magazine, the medium is the message and you are evangelizing.
