guests. we need to get rid of guests. they slow down ns so much. and the sad thing is that there is always more people logged on as guests than regular. the site is already known enough. there are probobly over 1,000 people on this site that dont even ski.

i remember when kazaa first started there was 15 sample downloads and if you liked it you downloaded kazaa, harvey should set it so there can be like 10 sample visits and if they want more then they can become a member

 
i argree to get ride of guests. its takes just as much time to log in as it does to sign up as a guest. i was never a guest be4 i came on NS anyways, it was free to sign up so i signed up right away.

without guests there would be even more inactive accounts than there already are. as guests they can't clutter the messages boards even more, without the capability of viewing videos that makes the site faster, and the site does not have to maintain a profile with working link on the left for someone that glances at the site twice.

i think its a dumb idea. boo hoo, its slow, get over it. people will get afraid to come to the site if they have to be a member, i hate when u have to be a member just to read a forum, is possibly the gayest waste of time and useless thing in the world.

and i dont see ur logic on how it will speed up the site.. wow, all the guests turn into members! yay, 2 times more posts, and the speed stays the same cause they are still accessing the site..

agreed moe. The number of guests isnt actually accurate.

Many membvers log in as a guest quickly to check pics, forums etc. when theyc ant be arsed typing in their details. However if they thend ecide to log in it doesnt take away a guest. it leaves it alone and the site automatically takes it off after 4 hours or whenever the login session expires.

Seconndly, many users (members and guests) don't logout. therfore the guest lists eems larger because they dopn't logout. Also a reason why there are always so many people online who don't actually talk or appear to do anything.

dude freeskiing couldn match ns. the atmosphere here is so much better. its more of a community then just people on a site. plus, there is a better layout i think and a chill owner. how many times does the owner of freeskiing.com talk to you or give personal request or post in forums or post pictures. is the owner involved? not as far as i know(he might be) harvey is actually involved in the scene. newschoolers.com is way better

When people dont log off, they only stay on the online list for about 20 minutes. So it's not that far off.

Same goes for guests. It doesn't take 4 hours for them to go away, just 20 minutes or so.

Personally ive allways realised that newschoolers dominace of an online skiing website would at some point be threatend. And i believe that this FS site is a contender.

But NS has the advantage of being a first mover and has a core of devoted members and not to be left out, substantial contacts in the ski industry. (e.g. poorboyz)

My message to Harvey is to realize the potential of NS and what it could be. Ive had ideas ranging from holding a NS ski competitions amature and pro with invites to all the pros. More advertising in movies and the like. My guess is that NS's main problem is lack of money. but one of its main strentghts is the devotion of its members and and the fact that some people are willing to donate. (from a business point of view that is unheard of). Now is the time to capitalize on this and move forward.

A close partnership with poorboyz would cement NS's future as the leading freeskiing website.

What NS needs to realise is its place in the skiing market and its potential for marketing and possible ventures as quite large.

I think now is a crucial time to act.

NS has sponsered a number of ski cmopetitions, as well as 'gatherings'. They have started their own ski clothing company, and help distribute a number of video through their store.

while FS.com may be a new player in the game...they do not affect the usage of NS to the point it will become an issue. I am sure over 90% of all those members originated on NS and will continue to return to NS as opposed to concetrating on simply FS.

From being on the inside I know that the potential of NS is more then relaised and there are plans to take advantage of that. competitions, events, movies and everything has been talked about and much more. we have already cohosted competitions, movie premieres, events and parties. NS has been a large factor in the advertising of several up and coming companies, production crews and athletes alike. The NS ads have apeared in most of the movie releases in the past 2 years..as well as shoutouts to the site and its major players. the NS clothing has moved from a single image printed on 2 dozen hoodies to a full clothing line selling hundreds of units (and just wait till next year) but what continues to limit the extent at which NS can be present in the industry is always MONEY. yes the site does draw revenue from advertising, but most if not all goes right back into the site to pay for server costs and the likes. same with donations. NSC icome is rolled over into new product right away. the competitions have been talked about for years...but unfortunately thousands in insurance makes it impossible to host under the NS name...and the hills and other major industry players are quite reluctant to shell out the money as well. travel costs (both for the NS crew and competitors) are also limiting as all the hundreds to thousands of miles the crew has traveled to host and attend events all comes directly out of our pockets. it is also hard to get huge numbers of members to attend in each region since teh member base is world wide.

generating partnerships is also a major plan and is in the works...there are more behind the sceeens one then you know of...with NS and its people playing roles in several of teh major companies. again money does play a part in this...the amount of money in the 'friendly' companies is still quite limited...and major companies such and oakley and salomon with money to burn keep it to themselves.

you bring up alot of valid points...but dont think it has never crossed minds on this side...there are lists and lists of ideas and plans that are just waiting to hit the real world. have no fear...NS is far from stagnant in this market and good things are coming

i thought about a long reply but really it would only be guess work. You see im from england and the only contact with the ski industry i have is a dude from salomon and NS.com. So in terms of providing relavant informative ideas im not sure i have the knowledge. But what i can see (as im currently doing a buisness masters) is potential. Being a truly passionate skier i love all things skiing related and i just think that with the right decisions and stratagys NS could become a central part of skiing. If i was involved with NS id be thinking along the lines of what i can make of it in terms of a business as well as keeping what essentially makes it so popular.

For instance what Terje did with the artic challange as well as being a truly cool thing to do it was also a very clever marketing idea. Essentialy there's a resentment in youth culture today for the large cooperations and the media driven competitions werent what the core snowborders wanted. There is still a place in skiing for this type of event and no one (to my limited UK knowledge) has capitalized on it. (you would need the backing of a very famous pro e.g. tanner, pep, whoever) and it may work.

Also whilst im sure compaines like oakley, salomon and the like are aware of this site, i still cant believe that there are more advertising banners, from a targeted market perpective this website is a GOLD MINE for a company such as this.

From the snippets of info ive read about this site im told that the hit rate and also the repeat hit rate are substantial. And if NS ( im not sure if its just harvey or there is a group of people that contribute to this site) wanted to raise cash then its quite easy to get a small buisness loan based on this hit rate from a bank. And with this cash you could think about how to use it in a way that would generate either extra publisity or say a competition that you could sell the tv rights. All this would be very risky but with the present industry contacts (poorboyz and the actual skiers) it could be pulled off.

What about so online trading of skiing goods? or what about an editing business? For instance i had some really great footage of last season that i wanted to make a movie with. but i had no idea how to do it. If i wasnt lucky cos i had a mate with adobe and that i bought a book that taught me how to do it then i wouldnt have a ski movie that im quite proud of. How about you offer to edit people movies for them in return for some cash?

To be honest theres LOADS of things you could do and id like to see NS succced cos skiing is such a great sport and anything that helps it, is a good thing in my book.

Ill be watching.
