right now if u see another person with twin tips, its much different than a snowboarder seeing another snowboarder cause there r so few of us. when i put my skis on the rack today for lunch, i came out and there were 4 other pairs of twintips all put right next to mine which shows how freeskiing has a very tight community cause it is so small. i think that once it gets bigger, it will lose some of its excitment and u wont be able to know all of the pros and most of the good AMS by name

also, i think the sport will lose some of its accesablility if it gets as big as snowboarding. right now if u walk up to a pro at a ski expo or somtin there cool and act like regular people and there arnt mobs around them unlike Shaun White whos a celebrity now

talk to someone who was there at the begining, not alot of newschoolers are chill with each other in the park, some are chill as hell, but theres still that niche who judges you by you gear. we need to unite more. back in the day if you saw someone with twins you were tight from the beginning.

 
i agree except for the fact that there isnt enough of a selection of nice gear in the shops, only 1080's really. But i do like the pobulation of skiers

thats so true i was at the park the other day and there was like a 1000 snowboarders and i ran into a few other ns skier and we were tight even though we didnt know each other. snowboarder arnt like that cause theres so many of them

im with reggae, it's not as close knit as you think, and as it used to be, there are alot of punk ass dicks out there too. sometimes you'll try to strike up a convo or give props, and the guy will be a dick.

I have yet to meet a skier in the park who wasnt chill. I have met snowboarders who arnt... like the one who demolished my binding-- see my thread about park ettiquit.

what do u guys think about the sport getting bigger. I think its good for the industry and all that but i like it right now how its kinda a minority thing goin on that makes every one closer.

 
yah man a few years ago it was different, back when there were maybe three or four other kids on the mountain with twin tips and youd go out of your way to meet up with each other, but now alot of the people with twins only have them caus the guy at the shop said they were the coolest ski you could get or because they have a pretty topsheet. I know what you mean though, the core people tend to stick together.

I also liked it best about 2 years ago. I am afriad of it getting too big for my own selfish reasons. I like to think I am different b/c of freesking than others and don't want to see another 'me' much less a flock of them. Snowboarders are just now weeding out the goobers and most boarders are super chill in the park/pow and totally support us. Goober stage is escallating fast in our sport, but again that is purely selfish. Overall growth is great for the industry.

 
i dont think its at its coolest stage now. a lot of it today is about how you dress and how much oakley and siver you wear. it was the best a few years ago when there just a few people doin it

I was watching some show this morning, or maybe yesterday I dont know, but they expect 'all skiers under the age of 20 to be on these cool new twin tip skis with in the next few years'... and at that point I nearlly jumped off my deck, it'd be great for the industry and all but I enjoy being the minority.. like the guy above said.

under_acheived, that is so true about how more and more people ride twin-tips cuz they look cool, like the other day I saw some guy doing the snowplow with mavericks, and I saw a like 6 year old girl with 1080's, and like a 10 year old who couldnt ski with AR3's

what you're saying is true, i usually start talking to other dudes with twin tips. the only exceptions are many of these snotty freeride team bitches who are just snobs by nature, you try to talk to them and they will ignore you because they're cool enough to have their parents pay for them to join the goddam freeride team. i hate those fucking team, freeskiing was never meant to be a fucking team sport

yeh, at my mtn. the skiers look out for each other...even though im the odd man out with the regular skis but still pullin off 3's and kinked rails...how do u guys feel towards regular skis...(im orderin some fujis by tommorow or tuesday)

 
i don't think freskiing is at it's coolest point right now, maybe last year or two years ago, but not now. my mountain doesn't have a park, pipe or anything but lately the mtn has been packed with kids on twintips who can't ski for shit. it's kind of sad, really

You guys got to understand that sometimes ski shop only sell twin tips to make some cash. Cuz yeah they are the cool thing to own and all little rich kids want them. Ski shop's make a lot of money off rich people. They dont make a lot with people like us who know their shit and that know what we want. Someone in my family owns a guitar shop and he makes a big part of his profit off rich people cuz they want the best and coolest guitar even though they'll probably just show it to people and nver play with it. That's kinda how this is with ski shops.

 
At my local hill it seems like every one and there mom (literally) are on twin tips. Even the rental shops are handing out the twins. Although i cant say much i just bought twin tips this year. Pretty much every new ski that is out has some sort of a twin though.

 
the only time ppl on twins have ever spoken to me is when there was a group of 5 12year olds behind me in the lift queue at buttermikl. i had my ar5's on and they were being all obnoxious, asking me what tricks i could do and all this shit. i'm from australia so i'm not really used to talking to people on the mountain (cos no one in australia talks to you on the mountain), and when i turned around and said hello to them they were a bit freaked by my accent, they weren't expecting that.

there are like 3 times the boarders than ns skiers at holiday valley but there are only a few serious guys (most of em like me who still compete moguls) but like me and my buddies who are serious a about skiin ski with the guys who are serious about snowboarding and there are about half of em skiers and half snowlerboarders.

do it for yourself and no one else
 
yea at perfect north on friday there were like 10 of us on twins in the 'park' and like 1 snowboarder, it was really cool to see, and every1 was helping each other out and cheering for eachother.

i hate when ur at a place like wachusett where all these assholes that have never skied or boarded before go, and all the little poser snowboarders sit in the park. it seems like the better the park attitude is in a place, the more skiers or vice versa. but also i tend to get alot of props just for being in the park on teles, even tho i just started, and i think its cool that i get props from snowboarders too

 
i love the way that our community is tight knit. whenever i see a fellow twin-tipper on the hill, i immediately go over to him/her and start chattin wit em. for the most part, they're all real nice people but i've noticed that this is starting to change. compared to last, i've noticed a huge increase in the number of twin-tippers i see. everyone, including older folks (i see a guy with mavericks yesterday, a guy with scratch FS's a week ago, and an older woman with mad_trix the same day as the other guy) seem to be riding or talking about freeskiing in general.

although i love so see the popularity of our sport grow, i can't help but feel a bit uncertain about our future. sure, there will always be the small core of twin-tippers who are hardcore but i do believe that if our sport keeps growing, we will something bad happen, something like what has happened to snowboarding. i'm finding that i'm losing my little niche in society. until this past year, the only skiiers i've known were racers. this year, i've met up with a couple local jibbers. this is cool and all cause now we can ride together but at the same time, i feel like the sport I represent isn't as cool as it used to be. You see, from my early years of skiing right up to grade 8, i was known as the one skiier in all of school that didn't race. i was the cool skiier, the one everyone wanted to be. i was looked at by others as a figure because i was doing something that very few others were doing as well. now, when i say i have twin-tips, there is no special reaction. there's just a quick 'cool' and then the conversation moves onto something else.

I don't want to be known as someone who is not encouraging the development of freeskiing. i want to be known as someone who is/who trying/tried to preserve the small knit community of freeskiers that exist today.

skiing is pretty awesome right now, And yes there are some major dick's, last year i skiid alone alot becasue i had time off of work and tried to meet other skiie'rs to hang with at the mountain and most people didnt even talk to me , and the thing was I OWNED THEM in the park but they still didnt want to ride with me, Now i ski with group of kid's that are fucking the coole'st people ever (lief, mack ,kim) and the rest of the alpine skiier's, ahh shit im starting to tear up. Im out

i get intimidated by some other freeskiers because some people act like jerks and think they own all, and i suck so they're prolly thinking 'why's that crappy ass skiier here?' but alot of people are chill and everything. i think it's more in my head though.

yea almost everytime i go skiing i meet another fellow freeskier in the park and we usual end up sessioning stuff then riding for the rest of the day.

skiing is definately blowing up right now...im not really one to talk but ive been skiing my whole life jsut not in the park. i got some PE's last year and this year is my first full year skiing twins. i think that skiing is kind of in a phase right now where its starting to become the cool thing to do. i think that after a while it'll die off (which may or may not be a good thing) and those that are true to progressing the sport will stick around and dominate the mountain. i definately agree with you that say that freeskiing has a much tighter community than snowboarders. whenever i see someone on twins i try to get on the lift with em and talk to them. usually they are pretty nice and give me tips and stuff but the occasional asshole who thinks that hes the best skier ever with his stupid orange hunting hat (no offense to those that have em). skiing is awesome right now but i do get a little scared of what might come when i see 50 year olds on some ar5's. i go up to talk to them and they have no clue about the skis theyre even skiing on. they just buy it cause it looks cool. soon something new or improved will show up and the trend whores will go away.

 
02-03 Was the coolest year in my opinion. People were all about style yet they weren't getting caught up in it. Plus NS was way smaller and cooler.

I agree. I am just now starting to become newschool and i love that i can wear my racing skis in the park and do some sick 360 iron crosses and get respect from snowboarders. now that i have 1080 twin tips i am going to start skiing backwards and then start to land backwards off jumps. it will only be a matter of time before people start doing crazy things in the air.
