Newschool Ski Program

I just want to throw out an idea here...please give me you honest opinion...

The last few years have seen a lot of high calibre athletes come out of east coast ski academys, where they are trained in slopestyle and halfpipe disciplines. These kids have goals to get to the xgames, us open, wsi etc...

Now out here on the west coast, i cannot think of a program that is as extensive as what these ski academys are offering. Some mountains have Freestyle clubs (Vernon, Blackcomb) but nothing strictly devoted to 'high end' halfpipe training, slopestyle and such...

Seeing as whistler/blackcomb has one of the best terrain parks in North America, as well as some of the best training facilities that go pretty much unused, (water ramps are being neglected severley) dont you think a 'Newschool' Club of high calibre is needed? They already have an excellent and growing freesking program for groms that want to ski big lines, but there is nothing for the sean petit's, austin ross's, and such. A program where they can measure their success and view their progress through video analysis, and professional coaching by whistler professional skiers like the Chris Turpins, Mark Abmas, Rex Thomas's and such. With the resources that Whistler/Blackcomb has, I think this is a much needed program and they are fully capable of doing it, if they had the immediate intrest. This year there is also an option of night training in the new halfpipe.

Please respond with any thoughts you might have on the idea. I believe that we can breed an xgames champion from the kids that ride up here and from vancouver, if they had the infastructsure (*sp) to do so...

Id like to work with the mountain to get something like this going and would like some feed back from the kids on this site.

Thanks,

Ryan

what about the blackcomb freestyle ski club? the freestyle programs around BC have produced some of the best skiers in the whole (rex t silver star, anthony b blackcomb, marc abma hemlock, bibby and schillier etc etc as nauseum). i myself was on the blackcomb team for a fun 3 years. look at the guys who used to coach for blackcomb even, mike douglas, marc mcdonell, shanze szocs, mike atkinson, toben sutherland, etc etc ad nauseum. and they produced some fine atheletes. i'm doing work for TMC as a coach even and there's another existing 'new school' program. i thought you did that too ryan? personally i'd like to see an organized skiing body for whistler that meets up to shred together, put on some comps, and maybe travel as a team to competitions as well. that'd be pretty sick. good ideas ryan

thats just it james, there are all these programs that do it half assed...TMC is a different market though, bringing kids from japan.

W/B can do it so much better...

if they got it together properly

I posted in your other thread too. But I'll say it again.

I think it's an awesome idea and if I was young enough to do something like that I would be so stoked.

Bringing kids up to Whis from Van is a good idea too. There are some crazy Groms kickin around the shore mountians like Grouse and Seymour. Their parents just don't have the time to drive them up to Whis every weekend, like for example, I believe Anthony B's did. (Not 100% on that but I think I read it somewhere. I could very well be wrong.) They North Shore is just too convneient and Whistler gets ruled out. Especially for kids with working parents and siblings doing other things. Families can get pretty hectic, so it's difficult for a parent to drive their kid up every weekend. Some sort of bus for kids in the program would be really good. That is if it gets off the ground.

Best of luck Ryan.

why would you want a new school program?! Go out and ski your fucking self!!! You fucking pussies, if you need someone to tell you how to jump you might as well bend over and let someone stick their cock in your ass. Go out and learn one your own. PM and well ski together. peace.

wow i completely fit the discription of the vancouver rider described by trevorwoulddoit hahaha, i try to get up every weekend for a day but its extremely difficult when there is no mode of transportation for me to get whis(and hitch hiking sucks)...so i end up riding grouse 5 times a week haha, that being said anyone wanna do some carpooling on weekends up there?

^^ the reason to have a newschool program is for the kids that want to go somewhere other than just skiing the same mountain everyday. some kids have aspirations to go to the xgames and such. maybe you dont, and maybe there is a kid out there that wants to learn how to ski better park and pipe, but is lost in the mayhem of the park.

Do you also know how many kids are going through the park that have no idea whats going on? Those are the ones skiing by themselves that get hurt and have no one to help them out. Countless times i have seen a kid rollin by himself and hitting obstacles that are way out of his league. I would (and have) taken time out of my day just to do a lap with him and be that kids mentor...which in turn probably stoked that kid for the rest of the season.

There are kids that do need this kind of program, and i have been addressed by parents locally to orginize such a thing.

I'm going to try and make it up to Whis at least once every weekend.

But without a car it's going to be sketchy.

PA you are fucked its a sweet idea having like a training thing is mad like your own little crew and if you get a good coach he will have more expierience so he can teach you like how to go about comps and judging speed the proper way to ride the pipe...i thin its a mad idea

Im not outta line your outta line the whole frikin system is outta line and when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo and its your best friends face, well guess what marge its chinatown.

I reckon by that point they're skiing and filming with pros... there's school for ya... no?

Do it. I posted in the other thread, and I'll make a more intelligent post later, but yes, it's a good idea.

this isn't really on the topic but I've noticed a bunch of people in this thread complaining about not being able to get up to whis. We could always organize a car pool kinda thing to get up. I wanna make it up pretty much every weekend and I have a truck and wouldn't mind driving if people pitched on gas. Msg me if interested, I'm on the Shore.

Ryan your idea sounds good, we should talk your focus would suit the demographic taht we have at Whistler Blackcomb as you are for sure aware of Foose and my program is all about Big mountain and everything blackcomb is all about competition and the ski club is all about racing maybe we can come together with our existing programs to create a monster that we are already sitting on ?

thats a good idea, but no offence, all the coaches that you mentioned, the pros and all, would need to take ltos of teaching courses. not jsut like freestyle courses but probably psychology adn shit like that, or you would just bring in sports therapists. you need more than jsut the sickest skiers to properly teach kids. all the human kinetics and stuff like that should be taught to the kids. i guess that would eb taught in the school part though. good ideas though

as far as all those rich kids in north van whose parents don't have the time to drive them to whistler, i say humbug. i used to hitchhike up (busing it from richmond to horseshoe bay) every weekend so i could sleep on my buddies couch and go skiing. this was when i was 15.

i think it'd be sick to have a well organized free skiing body. i am personally inclined to the blackcomb freestyle team because i used to ride with them and i know it's a very good organization. i think a little additional development from the local skier community could really help. yosuke, myles, tavish, woody and others coach for them. i'm not sure how the bfsc is organized now but if there was an independent freeride program run by locals i think it'd be sick. i don't think credentials are as necessary as is a good recommendation from a bro.

really i'd like to see an group start to run more mid-level size freeride comps. the ifsa freeride event is too expensive and wsi is way hard to get into. i'd like to see more semi-pro events like the atomic halfpipe thing go down. maybe some slopestyles that aren't done by gay ass sprite with their weak sauce prizes that are given out by raffle.

there's alot of little kids out there who could be really sick, they just need to shred with groms their age who like to get pushed too. a little bit of good coaching too is a bonus. sure you could ski on your own but it's more fun with friends. bringing all the tots together to go shred would be really productive. i loved my days with bfsc, i'd like more kids to get the same opportunity to ski with mini shredders like themselves. it's just fun times, allows parents to do as they please and know their kids are well taken care for as well as having fun and getting better

i think this is the best idea. personly i can never get up to whisler because my parnents dont ski. if this program was to get started i would fully join it.

There already are certified coaches in existing programs that we could pull from big mountain to coach for IFSA level competitors, X games and other level jib comps lots of freestyle coaches kicking around , Skier Cross lots of CSCF high level coaches that live for skier cross. So given the chance all of these professional level coaches can and hopfully will in the future make this idea come to reality.

james i have the answer to your semi pro comps that arent gay question. LORD OF THE PARK.

im trying to make it a comp that is something you would put on your resume. for sponsored skiers i trying to get a shit load of cash from sponsors and fro non sponsored kids there will eb a shit load of prizes. hemlock just said they will buy two pairs of skis to put in as prizes. plus all the shit from line orage, and everyone else who i am working on. its more than just a sick day of skiing and a party this year. oh ya and its a slopestyle format this year.the hemlock park will be twice as big too. MARCH 5th. see you all there

I agree Ryan, good thinking

Hey Ryan - this is a rad idea. Something like Okemo Mountain School or the Carrabbasset Valley Academy would be sweet; there is probably a strong market for it as well to bring people in. Maybe if you run it like a private school that was 1/2 and 1/2 academics and athletics? Have you talked to anyone at the High School? They try to support athletes that are in school and competing (though usually racing).

So I had a meeting with the mountain yesterday and the Whistler Freeskiing Club, and presented the plan to them, so next year there might be a refined and expanded program in association with the WFC...we are working on it right now...its gonna be sick...If you are interested in joining up for this year, email Derek @ wkfc@whooshnet.com ...he can answer all your questions...

id support an idea such as that.... great cause.. what better way to progress in an environment where you can feel safe and not overly pressured.. plus having people around you who actually know what they're talking about when teaching a new trick/giving advice..

I love big dumps.

its all about the big mountain.
