News Updated to Often

IMO the news has been updated way to fast recently. While receiving as much news as possible may seem like a good thing. In my opinion things which are relatively unimportant end up as news like an update for and edit or when ever another western resort opens are put up. I appreciate the informative quality of these fast updates but honestly think they are acting more like ad's than anything else. I think they cloud out some of the stories which are more substantial and have had more written effort put into them and it has now become a search to find a real story/ update. I realize the majority of the site probably doesn't give a shit but whatever its bothering me.

We wanted to cover more of what was happening, and try a completely faster news pace.

I have a feeling that its much better to have all kinds of info, but we need to work on what is the "top"story - so that the best stuff is more viewable.

Here's a question -

Of all the news that we added in the last two days, which are the two articles that you think should have just sat there in the first two spots?

Remember that before we only put about 1 article per day.

The Sherpas article was one of the best pieces of news I've read. Also S.K.A.T.E was entertaining. Some of the edits, like PC opening week seemed like they would've been better off as video of the day/week because to me those get just as much attention as news stories but without a story.

I think front page news should be reserved for highlights in the industry with stories to tell or some description instead of just a video or a resort opening. I think the Stept video was sick, but also would've been better off in Vid of the day or something. It's possible to consider making a "featured video" section if you wanted to bring greater attention to certain videos of your choosing.

We've toyed around with the Featured vid idea... and that may come in a future homepage update.

However, my personal logic says that a video could just as much be news as anything else. That is why we have been messing around with this type of format - we want to break down the idea of just "news" and make it more of an "anything cool happening in skiing".

I personally feel that the news space on the homepage shouldn't just be a place to post an edit that was already in the video section, like the New Intelligent Group edit or the Park City edits.

Why not?

As an experiment, the videos that we post there actually get way more views than they do just in the video section. It brings it in front of the eyes of people who wouldn't have otherwise seen it.

Point of fact, with the way we've been doing the news lately on average people on this site are reading 2-4X the amount of news as they used to.

The old system was cool, but hardly anyone read it in the grand scheme of things.

I love the new news section. It moves quickly, and brings lots of things to my attention that I would have missed without it. The only drawback is that the frequency of new articles reduces the thrill of claiming the first comment.

This. Love the new news section for sure and I personally really enjoying seeing the latest top edits on there. Honestly I used to look at the news more than video of the day and seems like the videos in the news now have been really quality edits that I always watch. The only downside I have experienced is that if you don't check NS for a few days its hard to catch up.

Lol... I'd say that is a sitewide issue. :)

I mean the forums.... jesus if you don't check it like 50 times a day its hard to keep up.
