First day using my new glide cam, still getting used to it at higher speeds and follows.

Filmed on my canon t2i, with 17-40 WA F/4 and magic lantren.

Let me know what you liked/didnt like and what to do better! +k to all who help!

Thanks,

Cole Addison Visuals

i found it super shakey, like worse than hand held on the jumps, but the rails looked pretty good at the slower speeds, and i feel like iv heard the song before, maybe a little over exposed at points too

Overall it was good (sick skiing!) but those film burns and slide transitions got repetitive and kind of annoying after a while. Also the music sounded off for some reason, it sounded like there was a little bit of distortion on the lows/bass on the beats, but that could just be me (I listened to it on youtube and it sounded clearer, so it might be the compression or export settings or something).

thanks for the response, i defiantly understand all the points you said, it was my first day still need some practice. i got the 4000 pro for xmas instead of the 2000 my mom didn't know... o i need to figure out how tho balance it better.

thanks for the response, i defiantly noticed after watching it a few time i put too many in, i know what your saying ill watch that in the future. andy noticed that also with the song.. I'm not sure why it sounds grainy.. maybe the volume in final cut was too high? not sure.

Not bad man!

A few things: practice with your glidecam a bit more. At first, it is hard to keep it stable. Next, are you shooting with an ND filter? It looks like you were at like f20. Also, make sure your rider is in focus at all times (unless unintentional).

also, your not "steering" the glidecam properly. one hand goes on the handle obviously, and the next hand goes towards the top of the pole just under the handle, or over it. Its personal preference. I like to keep like 2 fingers while steering it. If you over do it, your footage will be shaky, but if you dont do it enough, your glidecam will go in all different directions. its sometimes hard while on hill because if you are going fast and there is wind, the glidecam is gonna want to lean back towards you, and sometimes to the side depending on the wind.

true true, i had the 2000 pro at first and it was impossible to balance, i have the hd 1000 now and it works way better but im sure with some time the 4000 will be great!

im kinda wondering what having the f20 would do instead of an f10 or so. Like I made a video this weekend, same amount of sun with no ND filter at f10 and it looked close to this.

Thanks for all the responses! al very helpful i appreciate it.

i do indeed have a ND filter and i have magic lantern which i used to quickly auto set everything its self then i did a little fine tuning my self, i had the histogram out and everything was spiked perfectly in the middle, it might look bright by the way i used the 3 way color corrector.

and for the glide cam i will try using two finger under the handle not the bottom.. that might be m problem. also any advice on how to add more weight to to to help balance it?

The films burns got repetitive, and you just need to practice more with your glidecam. Get Job though!

Seriously man sort out the audio, not only is it the worst possible quality, but it cuts out for a fraction of a second every second, I was gonna just leave but I like you so I just muted yours and listened with a decent version.

Firstly tell your friend to stop reverting, he's not going to get any better at skiing switch if he's always trying to get out of it. And it doesn't look great.

I love the song, but it's not really the right speed for your skiing, as you were going pretty fast on some of the jumps and it's just a slow song.

1:11 was out of place.

Nice edit though, like people said kinda shaky is all, although not having used a glidecam I don't know how difficult it is. Seems good to me. Oh and if you're using the slide transition don't use it all the time, and there was a bar at the top on the first one.

f10 isn't to bad at all. For glidecam shots, you TYPICALLY want everything to be in focus. Therefore, you should be anywhere from f6.3-f11. Lenses are typically sharpest around f6.3-f8. Id still grab an ND though. Shots can look nasty without them. On a real sunny day when the sun reflects off the snow, they are almost a necessity.

Would a normal ND work or do you need to get a variable one? And what amount of density (or whatever the term is) do you use? .6? .9? more than that?

Variable ones are basically all of the stops in one. I have a .6 filter and I havent needed anything more. Variable would defiantly be awesome though. You just twist the end of it to increase/decrease stops of light. But honestly, ive never needed anything more/less then a .6

Ah thanks man. Is there a way of telling how many stops of lite the .6 or .9 or .3 number filters are going to reduce? I assume that .6 ones reduce more than 2/3s of a stop of light, right?

Ehh. Honestly, im not quite sure on the science behind it. Id assume the .3 is around 1/3~ stop of light and .6 is 2/3~ stops of light. Not 100% sure though.

ND filters are quantified by their optical density or equivalently their f-Stop reduction as follows:

Attenuation Factor Filter Optical Density f-Stop Reduction % transmittance

2 0.3 1 50%

4 0.6 2 25%

8 0.9 3 12.5%

64 1.8 6 1.5625%

1,000 3.0 10

Thanks guys!

Any suggestions on fixing the audio problem? I have no idea how it happened! I followed vimeos guidelines too.

Could be the export settings in fcp or it could just be a bad quality audio file (like a low bitrate or somethign). Does the song sound normal when you play it in quicktime on your computer? That would mean that something in fcp messed it up.
