Newbie question on skis

Hey all... This will be my first full year skiing, and my second year on the snow. I am 6 feet tall and 165 pounds, and 19 years of age. Last year I rode Line Five-Os and Line Weapons with Kniessel Rail boots and I had a blast, but a bunch of my friends have convinced me that I need to make the change to skis. I went once and rented some crappy Rossignol CUT 165s that were torn up and that's my only experience on skis, but it seemed pretty fun. I'm going to be selling the Five-Os and holding on to the Weapons for goofing around in the park at times. I'm looking for something that I can take to the park on occasion, but I'll probably be spending the majority of my time just carving down the slopes since a large percentage of my friends are not the park-type. They are, however, very good alpine skiers and will hit any type of terrain on the mountain, though they prefer a good bowl. I found a couple good deals (I think) online, and I'd like some input as to what would be a good ski for me.

I've heard a lot both positive and negative about the 01 Candides that are selling on ebay and I am very much interested in them since they are so cheap to get into skiing with. Other than those, I am looking at 02 Skogan Sprangs or 04 Darksides as I can get those for about $250 shipped at most and most people seem to have positive experiences with them... Also, what bindings should I go with? Look P10 and P12 are mentioned a lot, I am aware, but has anyone had experience with Look Nova 10 Maxplate bindings? Sport Chalet has them for $90 and they seem pretty similar to the Loop P10s. I am really trying to pick everything up at a good price as I don't get to go altogether too often, maybe 15 times at best. Anyway, thanks for any help you New Schoolers can extend to a lowly skiboarder aspiring to join your ranks ;-)

6', 165lbs. You need to be on at least a 175cm ski. Believe me, it makes a world of difference.

So then the Candide 180s with Look p10s would sound good and provide a good, fun all-mountain ride that is still very parkable? I live in California, and I'll be spending most of my time at Dodge Ridge, Mammoth, Mt High, Bear, Tahoe, etc... What about poles, are there any in particular that I should be on the lookout for?

for a good all-mountain / park balance, also check out Head Mad-Trix. don't worry about what kind of poles, anything will work.

yeah those candides seem like a really good deal and would suit what you want to do. go for it.

I feel bad for people who don't drink, cause when they wake up in the morning, thats the best the're going to feel all day
 
that sounds like a nice setup for what you want, and as far as poles go, get cheapos so you dont worry about breaking them. i know people who like to 'borrow' from the local hills, but scott and some other companies sell models for like 15 20 bucks.

btw, this was one of the most informed and intelligent 'which ski' posts on here in a while. good luck and have fun skiing.

I find poles at my local shop for 5 bucks. I heart used poles.

I have a pair of candides, you will love them...especially for all mountain use as they ski better than almost any other twin. However, if you will be in the pow alot and want a wider ski, you can get Head Madtrix (no plate) for about $200.

go to www.skiandsnowboards.com (in canada, i got my Candides from there last year) and find the Head Madtrix. I think they are $229 CDN. Those wouldn't be a bad choice either. Sometimes you can ask about p10s or p12s or something and they might sell them to you too for a $100. Good luck!

 
Hmm, sounds like half of you say to go with the Candides and the other half are rooting for Mad Trix... I already spoke with the guy selling the Candides on eBay and he said he'd throw in Look P10s for $129 extra, making it $318 for planks and bindings, and I am kinda leaning that way... Are the Mad Trix as good as Candides on the rest of the mountain (groomers, moguls, w/e)? I honestly don't know how much time I'll spend in the pow this year... Last year I was mostly at MtHigh, which is lucky if it has slush. This year I am looking to make more visits to real resorts, including a trip to Steamboat that I already have lined up (My uncle's opening a bar there). The only time I hit pow last year was about a foot at Kirkwood, which was quite fun though I wasn't really altogether too great at it since it was my first time. I just kept my weight back and was able to glide pretty well for riding Line Five-Os (90cm 119-104-119 skiboards) and it being my first time. Hopefully I'll be doing more of that this year, but I really can't tell you exactly how much more.

I checked and it's about $180 us not including shipping for the Mad Trix, so we're talking basically the same price range... I searched around and I found mainly good reviews for both sets, although there did seem to be some isolated incidents of Mad Trix snapping, and people with the full system complaining (which I would not be going with). I suppose either one would probably end up being a good choice, but is there any more input that anyone could give me?

the mad-trix are great skis, but they are heavier than candides... if your coming off of skiboards, that might be something to consider.

look, att his point, being a total beginner, i t really doesnt matter! get whatever is cheapest! seriously man, it doesnt matter, dotn fret over this stuff if youre just startin, anything will work.
