New zealand on the cheap

I'm headed to Queenstown in two weeks but I don't have anything planned. Most of the travel guides I've found focus on summer stuff - but where do I go to ski?!?!

Anyone have any suggestions on cool hostels, where to ski, where to rent, and any pass deals? I was thinking of posing as a 17 yr old for the kid discount.

I'll be there solo for a week - come join me!

i wish i had the cash to fly there...ne way good resorts are snow park which is all terrain park , cadrona resort and treble cone resort

come to wanaka, stay at purple cow, hitch up cardrona or tc depending on how much snow we get this week, and rent your gear from ROCKET RENTALS!

my flight is to queenstown so thats probably where i'll stay, not wanaka, but is hitching no biggie in NZ? cause here its sometimes sketch but i'd love to avoid those shuttle charges

Im in christchurch studying for the semester, so ive been over there a bunch. best place to ski is probably cadrona. snow park is also right there, so is cornet peak and remarkables. go to cadrona for sure. if ure stayin in queenstown, try and go to the milford sound to its real dope

mate hitching is no worry at all, hitch between qt and wanaka once a week pretty. and getting a hitch up a field is easy as

cardrona is gay the try scrouge all ya money oit of ya and the mountain is lame, snowparks were it is at

Skiing - either Remarks and Coronet are your options, but dont worry about the later cause its pretty much the family mountain with not a single terrain feature this year. Remarks is the shit, awesome parks, and awesome runs if your prepared to hike a bit.

Transport - free bus up both of these mountains if you have a pass, or hitch NZ promotes it, less cars on the road = less emissions etc

Queenstown - checkout southern laughter hostel, talk to jim, reasonably cheap, rooms w tv, own kitchen, fridge etc, and FREE outdoor SPA, which is bomber after a day up the hill

Lift tix are F'd this year, cant swapp or get cheapies cause of the new photo system, Get yourself a student card off the net, will save you 20 bucks a day every day, otherwise possibly a mid week season, but if your only there for 2 weeks...

Definetly checkout wanaka, cardrona and TC are a total step above any skiing youll get in QT and theyre only an hour away

my buddy works in the Information centre so if you want any discounts on bungi or milford sound trips etc PM me and ill send u his details

oh yeah dont forget a round of frisbee golf in the arv in the QT park!

im out here studying abroad been headin up to wanaka every weekend living outta the car. not sure about queenstown prices but hostels here are 28 dollars a night for a bed and for skiing i would def say go to cardrona or snow park both of the parks are sick right now and snow park i have heard rumors about a 200 dollar spring pass which is SICK but youd have to look into. NZ is dope and skiing is so much fun out here

If you're going to stay in Queenstown then your closest option is Coronet Peak, which is about 20 mins away from town. Coronet has some really fun natural terrain and pretty decent lifts, but no park and it can get quite crowded. Check out www.nzski.com

The Remarkables is 45 minutes away, is way less crowded and has sick terrain, but you have to hike a bit to get to the really good stuff. The park is sweet, but there's no pipe. It also gets loads of sun because it's North facing (It works opposite in the Southern Hemisphere). www.nzski.com

Cardrona is sweet, it's about an hour away from Queenstown, 30 mins from Wanaka. Really good park and it has a 22ft pipe, but there's not much terrain, it's pretty flat, and it gets really crowded. www.cardrona.com

Snow Park is awesome, it's about the same distance from Queenstown and Wanaka as Cardrona is but way less crowded then Cardies, i.e. no punters. It's got a really fun setup this year, nice pipe, jump line and tons of jibs but nothing else to ski. It's also open for night riding on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. www.snowparknz.com

Treble Cone is really sick. Really steep, fun terrain; gullies, bowls, chutes, drops and stuff. But there's pretty much no park and lift tickets can be quite expensive, but a way around this is to get a rental car from Juicy rentals (Free lift pass at TC with any rental) but it's about 2 hours from Queenstown and 45 minutes away from Wanaka. www.treblecone.com

Pretty much all the backpacker accom is about the same price and facilities, and everyone hitches here, I normally have to join a queue of hitchers to get home. If you're only going to stay for a few weeks, then you should try to get to as many places as you can because they've all got something different to offer, I like Remarks though, it's got a nice mix of everything.

definitely a good idea, get some kind of student card if you can, its pretty easy to get away with and you'll save a heap

bumbles hostel in queenstown... ~$25 NZD a night. super clean and friendly. if you stay there you sleep in their sheets too, so no worries about bringing a sleeping bag. (extra space for you. most places will charge for using their linens.) I didn't get lice or anything either from using their sheets and I stayed there for 2 nights.

check out some stuff other than skiing too. you're there for 2 weeks and when else are you gonna be in NZ? spend the money you would on skiing going to the milford or doubtful sound or go bungy jumping. there's so much do to do in NZ, especially in/around that area. don't limit yourself.

queenstown is super touristy too. you'll prob go broke if you spend too much time in queenstown. it's not the cheapest place in NZ. try and get over to wanaka for a few days. post up in a hostel and hit up the new world for some cheap food.

i stayed at nomads hostel in queenstown, place was mad legit and cheap too. I stayed in a room with 8 beds but payed the price of a 10 bed room. Best hostel i've ever stayed at, everyone there was super chill.

it has to be a NZ or australia student card, they don't accept ISIC cards either...but I have an expired NZ card and it has been working fine

depends, the club fields in the Craigieburn range seem all cool with international student ID, but i am not sure about the bigger ski opps[/b]
