Please i need some Critiques to help me.

Also, what am i doing wrong, Whenever i upload something to vimeo the quality is never the same as the original file. What am i doing wrong? i am following these settings

http://vimeo.com/23979457

editing is done with apple pro res 422 (LT) at 59.something FPS, i am guess i should have put them all through Cimema tools to convert it to 30fps right?

Filmed a bit on New years Eve Day. First day filming with my tripod and head, so i haven't mastered many techniques yet.

I think i fucked up in not editing in 30fps

your export settings seem fine. sometimes if you do edit in 60p, the quality might be a tad worse in the online streamer. if you think your not going to be using any/ not much slow motion, shoot in 1080 30p, edit in that, then when you export, just export as 1280x720 and you should be good.

ya idk i always film in 60 just in case i want to use some slow mo, also do you think the slow motion in this wasn't smooth?

yeah it was fine. if your just slowing it down to like 80% or 70%, it shouldn't be to bad. but when you conform your footage, its going to be smoother.

you don't need to conform. but if you do, i prefer conforming to 24p, because i like 24 more than 30. but thats just personal opinion.

as for the quality, it looked fine to me and your settings sound ok. people always become hypercritical of their own videos when they upload them. i can't tell you how many kids have asked me why the quality on vimeo isn't as good as on their computer, when in reality the shots are just as sharp as any other video i've seen.

if you were going for the 'miniature faking' look using tilt shift, you need to be well above and far away from the subject in order to create the illusion of looking down on a model.

thanks man, ya i can see how that would happen. After looking at it hundreds of times over and over agan, you just get used to a certain quality and even if its off by a litle it makes it seem worse in the persons eyes

ya i figured that out, i just wanted to try it out and see how it would look, but i can see it didn't really get that miniature effect

the change between the really dark shots and lighter shots kinda threw me off. Also a lot of the edit seemed really flat to me and i felt there was things like the texture of snow that was lacking. those might just be personal opinion though. Try and keep you shots balanced with the same lighting (i know how hard it is a cop especially at sunset) but just change your camera settings accordingly.

ya i felt that too, but when i tried to boost the brightness it made the clips very pixelated, i kinda fucked up with those really dark ones though, didn't see how dark it actually was.....silly me

and ya that 18-200 doesn't have great depth.

how would i go about getting that feel? Pre or post work?

it will have to do mostly with your exposure and your picture style that you have set. cc can help that a bit if you cc with the 3 color wheel in fcp. lowering the blacks will give you a more contrasty look.

i used the marvels cinestyle picture style, and also i have been fucking around in color 1.5, seems betters but harder to use

Edit had a really good vibe. Watched it all the way and as far as the tilt shift shot goes, it adds something creative to the video that the rest of the edit is lacking in a way. If anything, skiing aside, a lot of your shots were good and you were on point with the editing about 75% of the time. It needs a transition in one place or maybe a color burn in another. The tilt shift, assumingly done in af, is a good start. Since you're not filming LJ's seg, a couple creative spots here and there help spruce it up.

That's paraphrased from a critique given to me not too long ago that I found it ingenious.

i was going ot add a film burn, then i thought to my self why do i have to be like every other newschooler.... aha but thanks for that

Nice Curtis! lookin good! I think I would have liked to see you maybe start with all of the lighter daylight shots and then transition into the darker ones with one of the sunset shots instead of mixing them up, just have a day and night section maybe. Also I dont think the sharpness has much to do with the lens. Maybe some slight focus issues but I think it is mostly just going to be in the camera settings. Doesn't the cinestyle look make it sort of flat unless you boost the colors in CC? I have never used that one so I dont know I just though I remembered hearing about it. Also do you set your white balance or use auto? It seemed like some shots were alot cooler color temp then others? I like to set mine the same for a whole shoot and using auto can change on you throughout a shoot even if your not trying to. Also just really make sure your getting enough light in with your aperture and shutter speed settings, try to keep ISO at 100 or as low as possible to get rid of noise. I really do think it looked good though for sure!

On a side note, Did you get any powder turns up at the fish?

well most of the shots that are too dark happened right before we left, so i didn't get many but the one i did were way to dark.

and the cinestyle does make it flat, but i find it is way easier to bring out the true colors in CC, other might disagree, but ya

and my whitebalance may have changed, which is shitty, just cuz half the day was sunshine, the other was cloud so i wasn't thinking when i did that.

And i personally got lots of pow, those boys came up a bit to late cuz lots of people got up there on that day and all of it was tracked out

Oh also, im glad you didnt use film/color burns haha. Way to cliche and trendy right now. being way overused in my opinion. It was cool the first few times but now everyone is just putting it in all their stuff.

haha good choice

i liked the angles, some of the far away shots i wasn't to keen on but everything seemed really good besides that, really enjoyed watching it and felt the song went nicely, good work
