New Video Gallery Beta Discussion / Bug Reporting

OK - We're ready to show off the early version of these things in beta.

Please note - this is not finished so expect bugs and little wonky things here and there.

However, if you want to check the fresh look of the Video galleries, head over to your Account settings (Click on the dropdown under your username and hit "Account Settings") and at the very bottom you can enable "Video Page Beta"

Give it a shot. Especially, take a look at the mobile interface. This fully retires NSTV and combines it with the video galleries in an attempt to make something that really works on Mobile. You will see a lack of channels and some lack of navigation, but Playlists are a whole pile cooler.

Missing loads of stuff still, but we're pretty happy about it.

Please report anything wonky you see in this thread.

Desktop video page for me is great, better than it was when I first saw it a few weeks ago. The only comment about desktop that comes to mind is that the bottom row on any category only has one video, centered. Probably something you're aware of. I like the idea of 2 rows beneath each heading under the default Videos section "Top Rated" and "Latest". All videos looks super nice too. Would it be too lofty to ask for a way to have a feature to be able to "organize" your own gallery of videos?

On mobile it's also sick. Really like how you're able to watch the videos straight from the Videos page and don't have to click through to the video page itself. I think that right now it looks kind of cluttered, there are a lot of words for a small screen and not having the videos and respective information sectionalized means that everything blends together pretty quickly. I would sectionalize and maybe simplify the videos on the mobile page just so it's a little less hard to look at.

I really like the idea of a private video function if that's something that might be in the list. Vimeo is harder and harder to use now and I think if Newschoolers could have private/password protected videos I might stop using Vimeo altogether.

Sorry about the "Category" thing - can you link me to the exact page you're talking about?

What I *think* you're talking about is when the videos switch to horizontally displayed... which is a playlist. Playlists are something you can manage (interface isn't out yet) or can be created by our editors. These have multiple videos, which displays three on desktop but only one on mobile because it doesn't fit.

We'll see if we can simplify the mobile display but there's a lot of stuff in there which we need. We already cut a bunch out, but will try to cut more.

Here are some pictures to hopefully help clarify what I'm talking about. This "error" also happens if you scroll down on the videos page under any profile to the "Top Rated" category, and again if you click "All Videos from gavinrudy" it shows also only on the bottom row. The top picture is 100% zoom on a 13-in Macbook Pro Running 10.11.1 El Capitan. The lower picture is like 90% or 80% zoom. The way I envision it is supposed to work is with the upper row as is, then the lower row where my Team Dankers video is to have two more videos to match the upper row(s).

Will there be a way to find videos by specific categories? I used to love being able to pick big mountain/jumps/rails etc if that's all I wanted to look for. I like the layout and everything but going through to find specific genre's of videos is a pain in the anus

That is what the tags will be for.

The old categories will essentially be replaced by tags, so that there's more granularity available and you can have a video which exists in multiple tags.

The problem with categories was that it either had to be an edit OR big mountain. What about a big mountain edit? What about an edit with half big mountain half park?

So that change should actually make it a whole pile better.

main issue is that I still cant go to a user's profile and view ALL their videos. Only a handful of "top rated" and "latest" videos. like yo hows ya boy supposed to binge on old hoodcrew or ltc vids anymore, i can't even find them shits

You can if you update to the video beta, if you have the beta enabled you will be able to see a link the video section of a members profile to see all of their videos.

FYI - We have just launched the beta out by default to everyone with the opportunity to switch back for the time being.

We still have work to do on this thing which is why we wanted the old version still accessable... but the mobile enhancements were far too good to pass up. The old page fucking sucked on mobile.

Please anyone checking this out, share your feedback here!

I was on my friends profile to watch a specific video the other day and it would only the their "popular videos"

Can't see all of them? Or am I just being stupid

My problem with not being able to see all a user's video has been solved.

However, personally, I'd prefer that right when you click on a user's video profile, it would take you directly to the page where all videos ever uploaded are shown in a grid. From there, the viewer can then sort through "latest" "top rated" or what have you to filter through them.

As it stands now, the videos that are the most prominent on a user's page are not controlled by the user, instead by the algorithms of "latest" or "top rated." Which isn't necessarily bad, but I might prefer to see something similar to vimeo, where the user can select a few videos to "feature" on their profile page. That way the uploader has a bit more control over what the viewers will see.

pretty much just brainstorming. nothing really too much to bitch about, thanks for fixing the main issue of accessing the archives!!!

IMO, you guys should make the beta the default, and remove the option to opt out (make the beta permanent? idk the terminology). Not having the option to see all videos on a profile is shitty, and for people who somehow opt out of beta and who don't have the internet finesse to find this page and resubscribe to the beta, it could cause some frustration

Not a bad idea. We can give a couple of options for sorting, and we'll look into the idea of having featured videos to highlight.

I mean we'll do this pretty quickly. Its now on by default for everyone unless they turn it off. Its just wise to do that with anything new incase we fucked something up royally or people hate it for whatever reason.

It will be the default with no option to switch very soon.

Also, we just added the ability to find videos by tag, which is replacing the old categories system. Old videos will have to get tags added to them in order to show up here, but its a pretty slick little way of finding stuff you might be into.

Cool. The tag thing won't let you add a tag. One can only select from the tags seen there.

Will that be changed? I'd like to tag "Mt. Bachelor" for example, but no can do now.

Also the search won't find stuff good now. I enter an exact title of a video I have and it won't show up at all.

Because some folks have so many uploads it might be nice to have a channel search from a users videos like YT has. If I did not have that search on my YT channel I could look forever to find something there as I have over 1000 videos there. Don't know how many i have here, but it's a lot.

Good luck with all this stuff. Seems to be getting better now for sure.

Search sucks. Its on the list, but its an utterly massive undertaking. I apologize and recognize how bad this is.

Adding tags right now is only something admins can do. Reason being we didn't want tags to get out of control with people adding all kinds of random stuff. We'll work towards a solution which makes this easier but for the time being we should basically start a thread which suggests tags that should be added.

Channel search is related to search. Channels are going to be handled through Tags, so we'll solve things in that direction.

Yes, that is smart. It might be nice to have tags for ski areas, but that would be way too many too!

The ability to sort a members videos by latest, views, ratings etc. is super awesome help to narrow stuff down a bit.

Keep up the good work.

Yeah I would LOVE to have all content tagged to resorts, so its something we're thinking about.

The rest we'll for sure look at.

ahh ok figured it out. not very obvious though and frustrating if you are on the old video setting and want to see more than 4-8 videos
