New Surfer need help.

Hey, I'm headed off to university at Dalhousie in Halifax next year and I hear there is some pretty rad surfing. I've surfed maybe like 6 or 7 times before in hawaii, tofino and newhampshire all on longer rental boards. Im looking to get into the sport more seriously and was wondering where some good places to start would be, I will be surfing through the winter so im thinking like a 6/5/4 or a 7 mm wetsuit but other than that I dont really know anything. Im about 5'9" and 165. Thanks for your help.
 
How are your surfing skills? Can you go across on the open face, do turns? Let us know and it'll be easier to recommend a board to you.
 
i would say that you should start with a longer board...like 9 ft ish cuz youll be able to get the feel for turns easier and catch waves better,then as you learn to surf better, you should move to a shorter board
