i have heard alot about a new sony camera coming out that shoots high def on mini dv, i know there are already cameras that do so but here is what i got off of sas films;

Last week at the annual CeBiT electronics show in Germany Sony displayed a prototype of its upcoming HDV camera. This prototype is the first HDV format camera to be publically announced, and although little information is available, this camera is sure to make a huge impact on the mini-dv video world. No specifications have been officially released, but from looking closely at the photograph you can see the following...

12x optical zoom
Some sort of 'nub' on the zoom ring, perhaps this is a variable speed zoom control, or if this is the focus ring perhaps there will be a range indicator markings (which would rock)

What is HDV?
Back in September Canon, JVC, Sharp, and Sony met and jointly developed and agreed upon the 'HDV' format. The HDV format provides specifications for recording HD video onto a standard mini-dv tape. This means that an HDV camera (as soon as such a thing exists) can record in either the 720p (progressive) or 1080i (interlaced) HD formats. For those who are lost, a single frame from a mini dv camera is 720 x 480 pixels when captured onto a computer. With HDV, the size of a single frame is 1440 x 1080, more than double the size of its predicessor! The other major advantage to HDV is that the aspect ratio is 16:9 (widescreen), there is no part of the HDV specification that provides for 3:2 'standard definition' video. This means that any HDV camera will be true widescreen instead of just having a useless 'widescreen mode' that crops off the top and bottom of your video, which is what most current cameras have.

What about the JVC HD cam?
JVC released a HD/minidv consumer camera last year, but because of the lack of format standardization and the fact that the camera only has 1 CCD resulted in the camera not becoming widely used/adopted. It is highly likely that JVC as well as the other companies listed above will be releasing their own HDV cameras in the near future. April 17th is the 2004 NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) show in Las Vegas, and more information will hopefully be released then.
