im really interested in what ends up happening in the long run with all these rider-based companies trying to break in to the industry. this topic has been discussed between me and a few friends quite a bit frequently, myself and a these people with experiance in the industry. the main problem these companies will face, aware of it currently or not, is that for one, the small size of the ski industry in a whole, and percentage of the industry in equipment sales. thats down to like 20% of all money flow for ALL equipment. that leaves twin tip percentage at somewhere between 4-5% of the market of the whole ski industry! not very big.

also, i hope these new companies have all faith that thier equipment is going to hold up, have good warranty programs, and have enough fundage to keep business going if shit goes bad. problems that supercompanies (rossi-salomon-k2-etc. dont have to worry about, fundage is there) dont have to worry about all that much.

dont get me wrong, i think its great that these riders and people are stepping ahead and trying this and its great if they succeed! great for the industry.

line is seeing that problem now. manufacturing a ski, that IS yet still a twin, but is all mountain capable. they had great sales because they were new and fresh, but now the funds may be down and they have to think about how to keep the company going, and to put food on thier tables.smart move.

armada is doing great so far. thier seller is the hype, best luck to them. they HAVE faith in thier product, damn good design on thier product. props there.

of the 5 plus rider-based companies out there....i say 2-3 stand in the next 4 years.....my opinion, i might be wrong.....then again i might not be.....

I think that the rider-owned companies need to realize the value in diversification, get involved (low-risk preferably) with multiple aspect of the market (i.e. clothing, bags, maybe even ski pants and so on). Line was looking to do this, but took a huge gamble in their binding project, which, although seems to be a solid idea, has come back to kick them because of the amount of money and time it took, only the have major problems in year one and push back if not cancel the product for year two).

Another thing that could bring success to these companies is keeping expenses to a minimum. This means their riders may not make as much money, but if they believe in the company they are riding, it will work out for them in the long run.

Hopefully, everything will work out in the long run for these companies. Hell, when Line first came out, a lot of people in the industry thought they'd never last, and they are still here.

What I think would be really interesting would be if a couple of the rider-owned companies merged, shared technology and ideas, as well as capital, and made one big-ass rider-owned, system bucking company with a couple good lines of product.

'this topic has been discussed between me and a few friends quite a bit frequently' were you discussing it over a martini, what the hell is this forum coming too
