New searchbar is quite the fail

yea i like how you can view more than 50 threads so you can go back to a long time ago and also how it lists the members who created it but it doesnt work at all. i searchbared fight club which i know has at least like 30 threads with that title and didnt see a single thread in the results titled fight club. i got a bunch of wierd shit like ski club and so on. could we possibly fix this or go back to the old one?

i think its aight. although if youre trying to make it more like forum listings we need page numbers!

The only difference between the old and new search is in the Forums. There is now pagination so you can view more than 50 results, and the search is a full text search which is more flexible than the rigid exact search used before.

We had to do the switch to Full Text since it's WAY faster and less resource intensive to perform searches.

You still have to search the exact title of a thread you are looking for. The old one was bad but I feel naked

Sort of. In the old search you had to search for an exact string. So for example, searching for "SIA ski show" would yield results that have exactly "SIA ski show" in the title.

So the old search would match this:

"We are live at the SIA Ski show"

But NOT this:

"SIA: Worlds best ski show"

The new search would find both of these threads.

dude, i may be buggin but what happend to google searches here? i remember searchin for stuff and having any keyword brought up. that was sick.

i like it, although if possible, they should implement the search boolean commands(?) such as "(search)" searches for that exact phrase "(search" and "(search)" searches for those two phrases, and/or commands, etc

no it sucked, it was impossible to find threads

if you want that same search just go to google and type in your keyword, so to use the SIA example you would type "SIA ski show site:newschoolers.com"

just put in whatever you want and end it with site:newschoolers.com and it'll search the whole site

also, the search of members is different

If I was to search Chug_Life, none of the names would be orange or show a donator status. This makes it difficult when searching for a certain member unfortunately.

well the first rule of fight club is don't talk about it not surprised you found nothing... but anyways i liked the old one fine but after i get used to the new one it could be fine.

I do not like it.

I was trying to search for old knee binding threads and I gave up.

It needs to display the closest matches to your search and then the date. Not date and then keywords words that you used to search.

I searched "knee binding" and everything was about threads titled "bindings" or "binding help".

It should show my exact search first and not worry about dates

paramaters! boolean parameters! i bet most kids dont even know what they are, and how effective they are when you want to search for something specific

Does it omit commonly used phrases like Google does?

For instance, when I search "food", it comes up with a load of results.

However, when searching "ever" or "ever seen", I get no results, when in fact I know there are threads with those words in it (I was specifically looking for the "Have you ever seen a 10?" thread.

If so, I don't think that should be necessary on NS. Cause some thread titles are seriuosly vague and the only way you would find them is by using some of those terms.

this is a perfect example cuz even if you add "have you" or "seen a 10" no results end up being listed. i wish some mods would get in here and do some explaining

You guys realize this is a mostly homebuilt website and forum, right? Shits hard to do, give the admins some goddamned credit for running a site with .1 million members.

We tried the google search a while back, everyone remember how that went?

The searchbar is better than it ever has been. Sure, theres always room for improvement, and I'm sure there will be improvements, but seriously, quit your bitching.

This happens with everything. Last time the site had a huge upgrade, everyone HATED it for a week. And then the next week they got their heads together and realized how good it was.

Let it simmer for a bit before making rash accusations and demands.

Same. I guess it is better for finding more recent stuff, but old stuff is rather hard to find. I like that it takes each word into consideration, but best matches should show up first.

And I appreciate that you guys are trying to make it better and I'm sure it will be eventually, but for now you get constructive criticism.

Eh I wouldn't say it's any better or worse than the last one. I mean now you don't need to search for exact terms in the exact way it was in the thread title which is a plus, but on the other hand, if I search for "favourite ski edits" it'll show me all threads with the word ski in it, which can vary from "what ski should I buy" to "my ski is broken" to "where should I ski", which makes it pretty hard to find certain things as well. Basically, it's like the video search you guys have going. I dunno how hard it would be, but allowing us to search for all terms would be nice, i.e. for my example of "favourite ski edits", all 3 words have to be in the thread title for it to be a hit.

its good for vague searches, but there should be options to search more specifically. i definitely like it more than the last, but i think with some improvement, this could be the last searchbar update for a long time

Agreed. Searching for something involving the word "ski" brings up a variety of results that is far to broad to be of much use imo.

is there anywhere on the site a way to see how many members we have, and perhaps how many active/non active/ unique ?
that would be quite sweet ....
and @ OP, i experienced the same problem, if you Searchbar for 2 words it will display threads with any of those 2 words in it, not necessarily both ....a bit of a letdown, but still perfectly usable .....

I enjoy your icon to an inappropriate level. No homo.

I think the new seatchbar's alright, but maybe sone minor tweaks before it's perfect I haven't really been able to use it that much yet

actually the new searchbar doesn't work at all, i just get all kind of random threads that may or may not include the search words....
ie. i searched for SIA ski show and this is a small excerpt of what it returned ...

FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU I'm try to get to a thread, I know the exact title name, but because it's an old thread it's impossible to find with the new keyword only searchbar. Can we have both please, or use quotes to search exact stuff like google? I very mad about this >:(

hmmm. i havent had any problems yet.

my mind was blown though the first time i searched and it was different.

there was a solid 30 seconds of confusion while i stared at it, since the search function has been the one consistently same thing on this site since i joined.

I was looking for the '11 orage catalogue thread and i remembered exactly how it was called. I typed '11 orage catalogue?, 11 orage catalogue, 11 orage, orage catalogue, and it never came up

What I don't like about the search bar is that it gives results for any word that you type, not all words like before.
If you type : best park europe
If the search engine finds any of those words, you get a result. So when I type this, I get a shitload of threads about park skis and none about the best park in europe
Before, since it was all words, for the search result to come up, it would have needed to include all 3 of my words instead of anyone of them like with the new searchbar.
I don't know if expressed myself clearly, english is my second language
