New Rule at PC - Thanks Vail

Some of you may remember the last day at Park City last year when Vail hired security and enforced a new "no backpacks at the bottom of the lift" rule. Word from some ticket scanners and lifties at PC is that they are going to be made to enforce that rule every day from now on. I know our crew usually leaves all our extra layers, gear, food, and drinks in our bags by the liftline, so this would not be good news. Thoughts?

I'd honestly be surprised if they actually enforced that rule, seems like a rule made so that tourists wouldn't leave their shit at the bottom of main lifts and get it stolen or something, etc. Im sure the bottom of the park lift will be littered with bags all season.

If they do enforce said rule, whats stopping you from leaving it somewhere else like the top or mid run? plenty of places you could do it, or better yet your car that is 100 yards from the bottom of the lift.

I'm also sick of people complaining about vail and pc, can we just stop being drama queens about silly bullshit and get the fuck over it? Go ski at brighton if you hate vail so much, you're the one who bought the epic pass.

Exactly! " oh no, they painted the poles nice and new again!!" " it's so not cool that I can't ski like an asshole and get away with it anymore!!!" Shut the fuck up already

No one liked/cared about the lift poles, especially the people on them. It was a cool idea but it never really worked out that well IMO. I couldn't care less if the lift towers are painted or not.

And people got in trouble ALL THE TIME when powdr corp ran the mountain, they got pissed at us on closing day EVERY YEAR in the past EIGHT YEARS that i've skied at PC. My friends or a friend of a friend has an issue with ski patrol every year, it dates back to even before I skied at PC, slow zones have always been patrolled especially on weekends and early season.

Here's what changed:

Lift terminals were painted

Uniforms colors

A bunch of new lifts/lodge improvements (irrelevant to this convo)

The people at the slow signs wear yellow now, not red

Like come the fuck on guys, if any other company bought pc and made the same changes, you wouldnt say anything. Stop complaining because its vail, go ski somewhere else, go visit somewhere else. PC will still have the best park in utah, possibly top 5 in the country and you dont have to ski it.

I don't think it has anything to do with the tourists, from what I've seen the only place that anyone leaves bags is at the bottom of 3 kings. Overall vail obviously isn't some super evil entity, but I just think it's ridiculous that they use the best parks in Utah to draw in skiers and revenue, and then they come up with these stupid ass rules that are just trying to stop park skiers from being park skiers.

We're already just about confined to one tiny part of the mountain, I really don't like the idea of them making all these new rules when we're already down there away from the normal population. And even if I did hate vail with a passion, where would I have to go? There are no other parks on par with PC's in Utah, just like you said, and while its dope that they continue to provide the parks to us, they have a habit of making us feel like they just want to get us to pay for our pass/ticket, and then they don't give a shit about what happens to us once we get there.

Also I'm not trying to defend anyone who has gotten yelled at by ski patrol for doing stupid shit, thats just common sense.

lol the people complaining about vail "ruining the mt" should read what Powdr did when they first bought killington. they cut the season length by a month, refused to honor lifetime passes, and pissed off lots of locals for other various reasons

Pretty sure eheath is on the payroll at Vail Corp...

I feel like I remember an NS thread where Steve posted about some stolen saga pants from the bottom of 3 kings? I couldn't find anything

Not trying to be 'that guy' but, could this be vail stepping up their security? Terrorism has been in the national spotlight for a good while now, naturally I would think that a huge company like vail would be feeling pressures to step-up their game. Is the rule a bitch, yea. Will it be enforced, probably not.

PCvail no bag @ bottom rule = airport unattended baggage policy?

This is a really constructive post. Glad we could get your 2 cents on the matter.

Ya know, the "do not leave baggage unattended, unattended baggage will be con...." loop that endlessly plays in every airport. It's not that the airports want free shit if its left around (ayo conspiracy theory) but more so that there is a somewhat of a valid threat from what could be in the bag (bomb, weapons, vintage porn, etc.).

Well fortunately the parking lot right at the bottom of 3 kings, unless you took the bus. This still seems pretty lame, its so convenient to be able to grab a snack or shed a layer without going up/down stairs in a lodge to do the same.

so you think people are going to plant bombs at Park City....?

theyre probably banning backpacks so people stop drinking so much in the lift lines and on the lift and on the way down

And your comment is more constructive? You're just like these kids, fuck boys who want attention on newschoolers. I take it you watch their show and/or just suck their dicks?

No, and I hope something like that never happens anywhere. Do I think that ISIS is planning on blowing up my my local airport? No, but I will comply with the screening and security checkpoints. It's just preventative actions to avoid a worst case scenario.

I've never ben to PC, but you guys just leave your shit outside by the bottom of the lift? Not in a lodge or anything?

If yes, no one steals stuff? I feel like if people did that at the mountains I go to, your stuff would be long goneeeee.

god damn it, don't be so willing to give up your freedoms. Airport security doesn't fuckin work anyway, you think some liftie will be able to sniff out a bomb? get the fuck out of here and back to your trump rally

Yeah man, I'm all over them. Especially Jon Klutsch he's really hot

Im pretty sure this is 50% the reason, along with people packing their own lunch and not using the bag checks. Like I said, skiers will be skiers.

At least they can't stop us from drinking on the way up ;)

Yeah its basically a mutual understanding that everyone can leave their stuff their and nothing gets stolen. Occasionally something will be taken but it's rare enough that most people are comfortable doing it. Its a long enough walk down to the parking lot that people would rather risk it, including myself.

Don't forget about 1/2 the management and long standing employees.

Also, crack down will be on backpacks brought onto the lift and in and around lifts.

Has no one faced the fact that night skiing ends at 7 now

Thats been an issue since before vail came to town. It used to only be 730 for years then for like one year it was 9, the last couple have been 8 and now its 7 again. Basically no one goes at night around here, its not like the east coast or midwest.

The way they should do it is how keystone night skiing is, like a few days its open late, some days its completely closed, some days its open for a few hours etc.

Damn right. The weekend warriors come out every Friday.

how can I prepare/mix/serve my delicious salads without a pack? The homies won't get proper nutrients before ski!

Vail closed the park for the next few weeks so Donald Trump can come ride. Uncle Donny snowboards and he has unfortunately called for a ban on all skiers. #thanksvail

Why would you leave all your shit at the bottom of the lift?

to have snacks/layers/weed/beer/camera in an easily accessible spot so you don't have to wear a bag or take trips to the car when you're taking laps

meh i was bummed for a sec but it's not really a big deal. i leave a pack at the top a lot anyway. there's also a ton of spots on the way down.

more bummed about night skiing because i like going up after work but can't get there till 6 usually. last year the park was pretty beat up by the end of the day though. brighton is still open till 9.

Trust us, its convenient as fuck, for grabbing your camera, snack, beer, shed a layer etc. its so nice having a bag at the bottom.

It seems like its been a common thing for years and the 2 times Ive been to PC I did the same thing and loved the idea, my mountain isnt really setup for that type of thing so its pretty unique to me and I like the idea. Worst case scenario you leave it at the top, tucked away in the side of the trai or in your car which is an easy walk to the parking lot.

Apparently you have never been on the other side of the fence on a closing day. Try being a ski patrol on closing day trying to coral a bunch of drunk ski bums down the hill so you can get home at a reasonable time. The less beer they have on their person the fewer times you have to ask them to leave. They just go find another spot in the woods to smoke and drink when they are armed for the day with drugs and alcohol. At Vail's infamous 4 at 4 most all the VR employees have a scanning gun and if your misbehaving and your pass gets scanned on closing day, that next year you will have to explain those actions before they will sell you another season pass.

Obviously its convenient but i would always be paranoid if i left stuff at the bottom of three kings. People leave camera bags and really nice dakine packs there all the time, very risky if you ask me.

I would never leave a bag with anything of value in it...people must be more ethical in Utah then the Midwest. I've had poles snatched within minutes of setting them down.

Yep the midwest is full of ski stealing scum, I know at least a dozen people who've had theirs stolen.
