New Restrictions on Teens Driving in Ontario

the ontario government is planning on passing a law that poses restrictions on teenage drivers under the age of 21. the first rule is that there will be a zero tolerance policy on speeding for young drivers, if you speed your license is revoked. the second rule is absolutly no alcohol to be consumed by young drivers, this is understandable. the last rule is the most absured of them all, young drivers are only allowed one other teenager in the vehicle with them at all times no exceptions.

these rules have come about due to the actions of few young drivers, punishing us while older drivers get away scott free even though many are poor drivers. i think that these rules are absurd. if me and my buddies want to go skiing we need to take more than one vehicle to the hill when we can all fit in one.

am i the only one who thinks this is bullshit or do you guys agree with me

dude the speeding one is just as retarded as the one passenger thing. shit's ridic, they're always changing the speed limits on roads these days and some of the roads you've been driving at 70 for five years are suddenly 45s and there's cops hangin around waiting to bust locals who didn't notice the sign change. not to mention the fact that almost everyone speeds.

they best not fuck around with that over here in the west.

i doubt it will pass. for one, the entire "green" thing rebuttals the only 1 passenger deal and for that reason alone and carpooling I cant see it passing.

insurance companies are probably the biggest fuckers ever. when i got my learners, my parents insurance immediately went up because the company assumed that i was going to be driving their car. well my parents would fucking never let me drive their vehicles, they make me save up for my own just like they had to do when they were kids (granted back then a car was $300 but whatevs). it pisses me off to know that my parents take a hit for something that was never gonna happen anyways.

man im going for my g2 test next week, the only one teen passenger thing is bullllllll, thanks to the few fuckin idiots that arent responsible to drive properly, two kids died in my town a while ago cause they were hammered, just pisses me off

yea man i heard about that one passenger thing today and i was pissed, because i always cruise around with my friends who have their license's or g2's( hell, even one or two who dont have license's but are good drivers, dumb idea i know) because im 15 so i have one more year before i can get my g1. If it passes im going to shit a fucking brick because now i cant cruise around to parties and shit with my homies anymore. Not that it matters though there are like NO cops in my area like ever so shit should be fine.

it prob wont pass because does anyone remember for the longest time they were talking about switching the legal driving age ( well g1) to 21 all together? im not sure if their still considering it but i remember last year there was big talk of it.

next thing you know theyre going to make the drinking age 21. Not that most teens drink legally either way but still.

Yeah heard about this earlier today. Definitely something you should write your MP about. If noone complains then it will slide through. Those restrictions are pretty ridiculous and really do nothing to solve the problems

Isn't the driving age already 18 there? That shit is ridiculous. I'm now 19 and I have been driving since I turned 16 and even now when I look at 16 year olds most of them seem mature enough to drive a vehicle. Imagine if you were 20 and still needed your parents to drive you around, I mean you could have a job and be living on your own but not even allowed to drive a car to go to work or get groceries.
Once you turn 18 you should get every adult right, no exceptions (drinking, driving, voting, etc....)The driving age of 16 works fine in albertaDrinking age is 18 which is also good.

although im only 15 and havnt personally been affected it also really pisse's me off. I have heard countless stories on how insurance compnays are pricks and do every little thing to get all the fucking money they can. My friends who drive always complain about their insurance compnay's and how pathetic they are.

And its so unfair how they can get away with charging males more. Its basically stereotyping. ANd i know im stereotyping when i say this but maybe they should charge asains( kinda like you said) more for insurance because we all know how the majority of them are shitty drivers. Not all but i cant count the time's i have been in a car and commeneted on a shitty driver and then see an asian in the car.

no offence to asians, hell a couple of my friends admit it.

Like i said i think its outrageous that they can charge male's more because of statistic's but in all fairness male's do get payed more than female's in the workplace. Although, guys genereally pay for the movies, the meal ( when out on a date), and other such things, lol.

these rules are almost the EXACT same rules that have been in place in BC for the past 5 years at least, so i hate to say it, but no matter how much complaining you do, the province of ontario is not going to get rid of these rules because they do work to some extent.

Some guy was telling me that in Ontario you cant get your license until you pass 12th grade but I'm guessing thats not true? Also, Here in america people are making the laws for driving age older but in reality, you only are older and it doesnt have any effect on the way you drive.

well then my arguement is completely irrelevant, but because it is apparently working according to some sources (i have no proof it is, but i have read that it is working, so there are people who believe it works), i doubt ontario is going to change these new rules because of unrest in drivers. Dont get me wrong though, I hate these rules, I am 18 years old and I can only have one friend in the car, however, if you have to use an "identification" system like BC's "L" and "N" system, you find ways around these rules, such as an officer cannot pull you over for having too many people in the car if you dont have your N on the back of the car, because he cannot pull you over unless you are actually doing something wrong, and officers cannot pull you over because you appear to be too young (it might be different in ontario because in BC our rules are "L" for a full year, then "N" for another 2, regardless of age). I can confidently say this works as I have had friends who have gone to court over these tickets and have had them revoked.

http://www.macleans.ca/article.jsp?content=n111839Alink to a newspaper article of explaining what they are proposing. i not to concerned about the drinking or really the speed for that matter, what really pisses me off is the fact that if this passes i wont be able to drive anywhere with my friends. i don't think that they will relize that if this becomes law the conjestion on ontario roads will be off the chart, and it will have negative effects on the environment, they are trying to teach us to help the environment i think this is a big step backword in the fight against climate change when they want us all to drive our own vehicles.

does this apply if you have your G licence and are under the age, im mainly concerned about the carpooling aspect

this wont actually happen theresalways a new thing liek this ppl think there going to impliment and they dont like its not fair to be doing 95 in an 80 and loose ure liceance. they wont do it

The one passenger rule just got passed in Augest for us who live in Minnesota.

It states that you may only have one friend in the car and a sibling. But if a parent is with you, you can have as much people as there is seats. That lasts 6 months.

Since i got mine in July it's 5 months.

But i carry as much people as i want. Cops don't really enforce it too much. As long as you act mature they don't notice.

when i read that i flipped. Mcguinty can go suck a fucking cock.

you are a fucking tool, you might aswell take out all metal scissors from high school's and instead use saftey scissors, because someone might hurt themselves!!

I am willing to bet there is just as much chance you can get involved in an accident outside a car( being struck by a car or truck) as there is that you would get into an accident while being in a vehicle.

would this apply to ONLY ONtario citizens? because im 17 and live in NY but i go to toronto alot with my friends, if i got caught going 10 over with 3 other teens in the car would i get fucked even though im a US citizen with an NY license?

Yep

The whole only one passenger thing is doubtful to pass with our whole going green.

The one thing i will agree with is the zero tolerance alcohol level under 21, makes sense...i know people my age, i am willing to take responsibility for myself, my actions.....

well thes new rules are BULLSHIT, but one i do not think that they will fully pass, the only one passenger thing wont B/C of the green party and hole Car pooling thing, also i dont think i full band on drivers licences will go into effect probably a 30 day suspention will happen. but this really dosent effect me cuz I have my AZ licence, it will on the other hand will efect my lil bro (who started this threde, good one man) who is an awsome driver rarly breaks the rules and loves to go skiing with his friends.

FOR ALL YOU YOUNG KIDS WHO DONT WANT TO SEE YOUR DRIVING PREVLEGES TAKEN AWAY WRITE YOUR LOCAL MP

thats the only way you will win this and if you dont it will most likley slide right threw

AHAHAHHAHHHAHA yur government has been talkin to my government... Same laws we have and to make it worse we gotta display a bright P-plate on the front and rear of the car so cops no yur a teen.
Think yurself lucky that when yur learning you dont have to do 150 hours of logged driving before you can take yur test.. Thank god i was learning when it was only 50 hours.

thats gay!!!!!
indiana i know is wanting to change their driving system all up..... lol good thing i got my liscense already!!!!
just two more days till i can "legally carry passengers under 21"
