see thats not good, we dont need a traditinal hard line pope right now unless we want to have crusades. THe chursh needs to find some way to sort of intergrate with modern society. Obviously it's gotta keep its traditional values, but stuff like sayinf no to condoms in south africa...thats got to stop. Given the influence the catholic church has, a pope whose personal interpretation of scripture leads him to ban say birth control could do a great job of letting AIDS destroy africa. a hardass pope is not what we need right now, unless the church is hella smart and is counting on him being a traditional shock but dying before h does real damage.

I personally don't think we can blame him for manning an AA gun or whatever... Nazi Germany was the kind of situation where you could get executed for refusing to shoot in a case like that. Plus, it wasn't like today, where we have a wealth of unbiased (or at least multilateral) media at our disposal to help us sort out what's "right" from what's "wrong." The people of Nazi Germany lived in a culture of nothing but disinformation and propoganda, and had a very distorted view of the world. We can't hate a bunch of old men because they were fooled/coerced into fighting for the Nazi cause.

I'm completely atheist, though, and I don't support the Catholic church's stance on most issues... and the child raping thing is not cool either, so i agree with you there.
