New night park in So.VT... Will you go?

I was up volunteering at Magic this weekend and was talking with the new owner and got some cool news. They've already begun work to make a park that will run until 7 or 8pm, accessible by handle tow and under the lights and adjacent to the tubing park.

For those familiar with the place, the park will be under the bottom of the red chair on Carumba. It will be accessible all day on the normal pass and either handle tow or chairlift, and after normal mountain hours by handle tow only. They're looking to start out with a bunch of boxes, tubes and rails as well as a few jump features as well so a decent mix for sure. We've been after them for years to do this, so it's a pretty big deal.

So my question to you all here in the NE is- would you go? If the full season's night park pass mirrors the tubing pass it would be $175. How do you feel about that? Worth it? Horseshit? Depends on the features & maintenance? Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

I think its a good idea, but will there be enough people around to make it profitable? I could see it being really popular on weekends when people are spending the weekend up there, but during the week will it still be open? I could see it being a bit hit for kids that ski stratton on the weekends and are looking for some night skiing

The idea was that they're already running that lift, the lights and keeping patrollers on duty for the tubing park, so they might as well double dip and make a park that runs on the same schedule to get more back out of it. I've been telling them it would extend the viable demographic for their tubing pass at minimal investment for a while now, so even if it's only mildly popular in it's beginning it will still be a win as long as the people who do come out enjoy it. Also, they only operate Fri-Mon, unless there's a pow day >/= 6".

I could definitely see it being a hit with Stratt/Snow/Bromley/Okemo crowds, but I'm not really into park so that's why I wanted to ask you guys what you thought. In any case, it's happening- so please don't hold back- let me know what's on your mind! You may actually see your idea at work out there this season.

know all of that, I think its a great idea. Magic is such a gem and so many of my friends that grew up in VT never skied there! This could help get people there at night and then possibly get them back during the day. How much would it cost to ride for just one night if you didn't have the pass?

magic is truly magical. as a young boy on a school ski trip, we showed up to magic on a pow day that was unreal, and untracked. this dude comes on the bus and tells us the whole mountain is open and ridable due to the epic conditions and the chaperons started yelling at him, saying not to ski the steep or closed trails. it was the first taste of freedom, adventure, face shots, cliff drops, and true bliss shredding the god given greatness. last year they hosted the ski the east tour and the venue was incredible.

hope the night park pops off!

i heard that in our resort a few years back there was a thing called yömäki (night-ride is a good english version) every friday when the main slope was open 'til 10pm. i have been wishing for it to come back, it would be awesome as a student to ski a bit more after school even though it would only be one day / week.

That's an awesome story haha... So Magic. They've hosted the Ski The East free ride tour since it's inception too fwiw. Stoked to hear that though, that's pretty much what happened to me without the school trip- and I never left! If you're into trees and cliffs though, you need to come and find me at Magic this year. I'd be happy to show you some of the new stuff!

Stoked to see them set up for park skiers though. They've done a tiny bit here and there in the past but this will be their first real attempt at an actual park. FINALLY!

Again this isn't set in stone but I believe they're planning on charging the same amount as the tubing pass, which is I believe $20 or so.

Also Magic has killer youth pass deals since they consider anybody

Sounds cool, wish someone would do something similar close to Burlington.

Bolton Valley has night riding wednesday - saturday till 8pm. Ive thought about getting a pass before but never have. If cochrans ski area set up a jib park at night and offered it during the week im sure a ton of people would go from Burlington seeing as it is only 20 minutes away. Too bad they primarily cater to ski racers.

dude having lived in south vt and skied Magic before this would be so sick. If Magic seriously upped their park game they would probably not have as many financial issues and would thrive more. if the park was dank there is guarantee i would go, how much would it be for just a night?

I believe they are going to charge the same amount as the tubing pass, which if you want it from 11am-7pm it's $25, 4-7pm is $20.

Also what I kept writing above (but forgetting there's an issue with mobile and using the "less than" sign) is that access is available a few ways.

If you just want to go one night, it would cost the same as a tubing pass as stated above.

If you want a full season's pass for the handle tow for all day & night, I believe it would be the same as the tubing pass (and also included use of the tubing park)- which is $179.

BUT if you already have a Magic pass- be it a normal adult pass ($589), youth pass ($489- ages up to 17 included in this, no bullshit 8-10yo cutoff) or a college pass ($219), you can tack on the tubing and night park access for $99.

The Magic steeps and tree game is tight as fuck right now, so it's great to see them branching out finally and offering something cool like this. Myself and the Freeride Coaches have been pushing for this for literally years so it's great to hear people are stoked on it.

Good to hear. A halfway respectable park will go a long ways in continuing to cement Magic as THE place in Southern Vermont for passionate skiers to go. As long as the build and maintenence is reasonable, it will be successful. It also gives the mountain more dimension and makes it more attractive when snow conditions are not on point.

Not to mention a Redline to Park run might just be the most epic of all runs on the East Coast. My legs are crying already just hearing the news.

If the park is at least half decent I'll definitely be going. Magic Mtn making a comeback? Glad to hear they're trying to do something that sets them apart from all the other mtns around here.

Don't call it a comeback, Magic's been here for years

Rocking it's peers and putting suckas in fear

Making the snow rain down like a mon-SOON

Listen to the pow go BOOM

Explosion, overpowering

Over the hucks, I'm towering

Wrecking poles, when I drop these lyrics that'll make you call the patrol

Don't you dare stare, you betta move

Don't ever compare

Magic to the rest that'll all get sliced and diced

Competition's so overpriced

[Hook:]

I'm gonna ski some pow [HUUUH!!!]

Mama said ski some pow [HUUUH!!!]

Nah it's a textbook comeback. People used to ski there, no one skis there now, people will begin to ski there again.

No more pink name?? :(

And only open to 7 or 8?! That's pretty sick but wouldn't hurt to stay open a little later. the hill I work at in CT stops running the lifts at 10PM !

I was just messing with ya. Agreed, although actually it would be more accurate to say that nobody skied there 5 years ago- the place was a ghost town and actually in total danger of closing day-to-day. It's actually pretty much fully turned around now. New ownership, management, lots of new machines around and skier visits are way up. They are pretty busy these days but simply not in relation to the park scene... That will help to have for sure IMO.

And frenchie... It's a start. Once they see money coming in it's going to be much easier to push for later operation. Right now they are shooting for value-added bonuses on regular programs and such rather than added capital investments.

I've been skiing there my whole life and they can't even get a park together for the day. i love magic with all my heart but they have had a lot of ownership problems and i highly doubt they will get it together. i have never seen lights on with the tubing hill at night. I'm sorry but this is just so far fetched. i love magic, its my home i live on timber ridge but i just don't see this happening anytime soon.

Never seen the light on for tubing??? Dude they ran that every open day last year and the lights were on for all of them.

Also new owner that's putting dough into the hill at a killer rate (Tom Barker if you know him) Come on over and check it out and say hi! They've already excavated a cutover to carumba from black so you don't need to cross under the tubing park too. They're finally making a consorted effort!!

I understand your frustration and Magic has been more Trajic the past few years but I'm happy to say they're really doing a great job and things are coming around for sure.

Bolton Valley? Years ago that place was ill at night. I think Also Cochrans started to put rails up with their rope toe area.

If I was going back to okemo this winter I would definitely hit that deal up. Maybe next season.

Scratch that, I'll be working at Okemo again. I'll definitely be hitting up the night park post work.
