New News Layout

Was just reading the recent LSM interview and the new layout design for the news is awesome, great job admins and coders! I've got a small/average 13in screen and both landscape and portrait orientation photos extend above and below the viewable space in the browser window. It would be nice if the photos were somewhat resized so that the entire photo fits within the browser. I know this might mean having white or colored borders on the sides of photos because right now they're stretched fully to the sides of the screen, but I think seeing the entire photo is more important. Thoughts?

Yo Gavin,

The new layout definitely isn't going to be an across the board thing. Running the first couple of articles of the season (LSM Interview/Roofbox ARV) with it was pretty much an experiment. It was actually designed to essentially be able to show off good quality images better without people having to open them and and also to make the whole editor look cleaner. But I agree with you that being able to see the whole image is important so while I do like the cleaner look, So basically there is some work to be done and we'll mostly be using the old format in the interim. We need to find a balance between the old news display and the full width one somehow, but we are also balancing the fact that portrait images look better on mobile, while landscape images work better on mobile so it's a complicated one. If you have some examples of pages you think do a good job, definitely drop them in here!

Hell yea Twig thanks for the tip! I'll try and see if I can find any examples that I think do it really well.

Yo Gavin, just a heads up, with the images in new format articles that are bigger than the screen on a small laptop (I also use a macbook where this happens), if you click on them, they'll appear in a lightbox that fits to the screen.
