First part doesn’t make sense. Jah is not racist in any way. If anything is more cultural appropriation which is not necessarily a bad thing.

the drake thing, yeah I’ve been trying to find how to remove my sig for a while so if a mod could help me out that would be great. I wouldn’t say it’s even bashing gays, it’s more making fun of drakes sensitive vibe.

the reason I didn’t *** the word squaw is because I know that I won’t get banned compared to saying the n-word, that kinda proves my point that people aren’t as clued in in Native slurs compared to that of Black/Hispanic/gay/trans people.

I wouldn’t really say I’m a ‘woke’ guy. I have a few friends that refer to themselves and every other white person as ‘settlers’ and I think that’s fucking stupid. So I get where you’re coming from.

I agree that no one likes having their traditions and lifestyles fussed with. For example, the Washoe people did not appreciate having their homeland seized, their people brutalized and forcibly relocated, their culture decimated, their language nearly, and then being relegated- for at least a century- to a position of near political powerlessness to such an extent their former lands gets labeled with a racial slur used by the aggressors in the aforementioned campaign of violence.

What's the word "squaw" have to do with skiing? As a racial and sexual slur for Native women (and it is by the way, ask any Native person or barring that just google it) who still experience sexual assault at 3x the rate as American women of all other races and murder rates 10x higher than national average, it has nothing to do with skiing, so why use it in the first place? At this point people should know the United States was once occupied entirely by indigenous people. Today there exist 500+ sovereign Native nations in the US. You are right that there should probably be further acknowledgements (and in the opinion of many more concrete, economic restitutions) made on behalf of Palisades Tahoe that they operate on the ancestral and unceded land of the Washoe people.

It has been an issue for decades. The Washoe Tribal Council has been lobbying for this name change for many years. In light of the history of violence against them, if the Washoe people want the name changed because represents and celebrates a dark chapter of American and Washoe history, it should be changed. Yes, the current political climate of "wokeness" as you say likely contributed to management's decision to change the name, but that just means you should be mad at the board of Palisades for capitalizing off the "woke" wave instead changing the name in good faith and in response to the calls of tribal leaders for the past few decades. In the end, its "positive step forward" for the Washoe people, a totally trivial name change for the skiers, and a bit of a headache to change the signs, etc. for the ski area.
 
To those saying “who even cares about the name change”.

People get used to things, they call places home, they associate a name with good memories, and when it’s changed then you can start feeling like your ties to your favorite place are weakening.

With that being said, the word also is tied to making others feel pain and hurt.

In my opinion the name change sounds like it’s a bandaid that needed to be ripped off. If the local natives actually find it offensive then it’s the right thing to do, but I do agree that a lot of name changes in other situations have been made without anyone legitimately taking offense / it just being a fake pr marketing stunt by rich white corporate America.

But yeah I get that it’s a bummer to have a place you love change it’s name regardless. I don’t think any westerners really even think it’s derogatory / know what it means.

I’m glad you follow my posts so closely tho.

The sig thing is genuine, every time I saw it I would cringe a little, more at the nbomb than anything else. I use NS exclusively on mobile and I would always go to my profile page, hit the settings and it would never give the option to change anything. I never went from the drop down and clicked settings.

As for the rest of what you said, I can’t really remember so I guess I didn’t really care.

I’m glad your jimmies are sufficiently rustled so I must be doing a great job.

I think what is frustrating most to me is the fact of political/social/monetary gain just because they changed the name but will likely do nothing further to bring light to the issues the board of Palisade say they “care” about. To most of the board it’s an east way around the issue to make it so they don’t have to hear from the Washoe people anymore and put the whole thing to bed. And in my opinion, a much better name could’ve been worked in with the Washoe that left some indication they had a dealing in it. Something that isn’t degrading to them, plus something that is more interesting than “Palisade Tahoe” Sad to see Squaw Valley as I’ve known it gone! But obviously I agree, nothing in comparison to what the Washoe of the past dealt with. It’s just skiing and at the end of the day the mountain will be there!

For sure man, I get more where you're coming from, respect. This convo of renaming (and the sometimes disingenuous reasons behind the renaming, which can give the whole act a greasy feel to some) comes up a lot so I thought it was time to just put a few perspectives together and evaluate from there. Like that news article says, it's just a step to remove the word but in a way it does replace. A step from like 50 steps behind still leaves them way back, hopefully there is more progress coming and maybe the flexibility on display will encourage some continued, genuine growth. No doubt I'd love to ski there one day, that mountain looks SICK no matter what you call it. Hope you get to shred it up this winter!

By older member I’m meaning both very long time members and members above 20ish / post college.

The reason I used the term older member is because a vast percentage of users seem to be teenagers on here from what I’ve seen.

I’m sure you’re full of life still like myself and not actually old in the grand scheme of life (I’m mid 20s as well).

And yes I’ve seen people preach inclusivity and sensitivity on here while simultaneously making very sexist remarks in past threads, homophobic jokes, and even telling teenage boys to kill themselves by passing it off as “trolling”.

I’m always up for a good laugh but yeah I’ve noticed some very contradictory statements out of a lot of people and sometimes “trolling goes to too far”.

I think you make funny jokes so don’t worry what I think tho. Feel free to pm me if you ever want to kiss or something

I mean this seems like bait b/c of the username. However, yes, there is a point to be made about having to change everything because of people who live with guilt or shame for no reason. I've even seen high schools change their name from the Indian mascot because of this same lame excuse. At a certain point people are going to have to question what we wont change to make other people who hate us happy. After all of the blm garbage in 2020 though I really don't expect anything to get better
