New name, who dis / Squaw Valley

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows announced they will be changing their name awhile back. It is offensive to native Americans? Recently they took the Alpine Meadows sign down since it had the word squaw on it.

I heard that the name has been decided, but only a few corporate people know. An employee told me they were suppose to announce it Monday, but it didn’t happen.

Any inside knowledge? When is it coming, what is it going to be?

Considering they renamed the squaw creek chair “Resort Chair” i feel like this new name is going to be a joke. “Olympic Valley” is not allowed since the word olympic is already trademarked.

Any guesses on the new name?

I can't actually remember but i thought i read something about "Olympic Valley" or something. I can barely remember my name though so idk.

Over Hyped Shit Snow Valley

If you ever skied Squaw in the spring, when the park is going off and the KT is slushed up, I'm pretty sure everyone who skis it would say it's one of the most incredible ski mountains in the world. For expert skiers....

This guy skis diamond peak and lives in reno

I’ll have you know I put down ‘type 3 skier’ when the rental tech is adjusting the dins on my S7’s.

Regardless of what they choose, I hope it acknowledges the local area and isn't something generic like "Snowy Valley Ski Resort"

It'd be cool if the new name incorporated/acknowledged the Washoe tribe in a respectful way. It would be a good way to mend the long history of using a slur in their brand name

All Rossi skis are dogshit, let’s not beat around the bush here.

I liked how my s3s and s7s have skied, even if the shape if odd. people liked the original iterations of the black ops from what i hear. the scratch was a very important freestyle ski in its own right obviously. they just seem to have a weird habit of removing their successful freestyle skis from circulation.

Lol I’ve never even set foot in California let alone been to Squaw. I’m sure it is great and iconic but I’m loving the amount of butthurt from you guys.

Ya their skis were good at times for sure. But 2021, I don’t see any skis that I or any of the homies would ski. They do have the Dad skis on lockdown. BlackOps 118 I’m unsure about and have heard mixed reviews.

the name will grow on me, but this logo isn't going to. The A looks too much like A Basin imo

I'll never be able to unsee the A-Basin A now

I wonder what the bird in the new logo is. An eagle in reference to Eagle's Nest? I don't associate birds with Palisades.

Kinda funny that Squaw renamed their resort after a Hyundai

What was Squaw will be Olympic Valley, and Alpine will retain its name. Collectively, the two mountains are Palisades Tahoe

Such a wack decision to change the name like this. Obviously this name hasn’t been an issue until recent years.

The word Squaw started as a term for older Native American woman and eventually some tribes used it as a derogatory term toward those women.

What does this have to do with a ski resort? Maybe instead of getting rid of any sign of the people who claimed the land before the people who came in after, maybe keeping the name or changing it to something that reflected the people who used to occupy the land would’ve been a better decision. Now, anyone who doesn’t know the history of the land won’t ever relate it to the people who were there before, just the corporation that owns it.

This change was purely a part of the “woke” initiative in CA called the “Re-examining Our Past Initiative”. Just more white people wanting to bring up issues that aren’t realllly issues because they have nothing else to complain about in life. Just like the studies done for the Red skins NFL team and other professional teams, i bet if you did the same for here, a far majority would rather have their people represented in some way than no way at all. The woke crowd needs to go back to sleep and let people speak up for themselves. End rant.

Yo who cares though? If they want to change their name, cool. It costs me $0 and 0 time to not really give a crap what the resort wants their name to be, so why shouldn't they do whatever they want?

a little ironic, right?

owners of a private business changed the name to their tastes. if you buy it, you can name it what you'd like. who cares?

That’s a fair point. And it doesn’t really matter, they can do what they want. I was just putting my thoughts out there on a public discussion forum where people typically do that.

& I care, I know at least 10 close homies who care along with thousands of others who care. It just kinda sucks when a resort you love and grew up skiing on all of the sudden decides to change its name.

Does it affect me or mean I’m not gonna ride there? No, of course not. I just wanted to share my thoughts. No hate to the resort either, they were pressured to do what they did and I get it in today’s culture.

Ya but it kinda be like if it were called ‘n****r’ Valley. That would have been changed decades ago.

Native Americans have been and continue to be underrepresented and oppressed across the whole of North America and I think it’s great that the redskins and Squaw Valley are changing their names. Shit, there was a mountain in BC that was called ‘Squaw’s Tit’ until recently. A name change does nothing to affect anyone else, as you said yourself, so why even bring up that you don’t fw the name change.

That and when someone challenge’s your point and you say ‘I’m just expressing my opinion on a public forum’ as if that somehow gives you immunity for having people challenge your opinion, is some BS.

sorry everyone, this thread is now POLITICALLY CHARGED.
