okay this might be kind of a broad topic, but i need a new monitor. i currently use an acer AL2216 22" lcd monitor and it's fine but i'm not super happy with the quality, i got it for under 200 bucks so i kinda cheaped out but i'm finding the colors are somewhat poopy. i run it with a new 13" macbook and i would jizz my pants at the idea of having a secksy apple monitor but i need something that i can easily play xbox on via VGA
so i need the macbook connected through DVI and secksbox through VGA or HDMI if this monitor has that input so that kinda rules out apple without me spending tons of money on adapter boxes and shit
so any suggestions would be appreciated, it needs to be 22-24", anything bigger won't fit in my desk cutout place, and it needs to be somewhat thin, not some mongaloid piece of ass, and i'm looking to spend not too much on this but not like 6 dollars for some CRT piece of shit
 
You definitely want a 1920x1200 resolution over the 1920x1080. That's a 16:10 aspect ratio, not 16:9. You'll pay the same for either one so get a 1920x1200 pixel monitor. It will give you more vertical viewing space, which is more important than horizontal space for reading and web use, and the monitor will automatically letterbox itself to 1080p when you use the xbox or watch 1080p video with no ill effects.
 
I was gonna say that, but I decided not to.

The 1920x1200's cost a little more. (quick math points to +$50)

If it comes down to cash, get a 1080p monitor, but if you want real estate, of course you should opt for a 1200 monitor.

If you think 120 pixels dosen't mean much, think again. An extra 120 pixels of vertical would be the equivalent of removing my firefox toolbar, which would be nice.
 
any specific recommendations of 1200 monitors?i'm happy to pay an extra 50 for more pixels

It seems to be hard to find VGA anymore.

I would go for the first one on the list, ASUS is a brand I trust, they are the best motherboard manufacturer, and thought they are kinda new to the monitor game, im sure you won't be disappointed.

The first one has built in speakers, so it will transmit sound through HDMI, but it wont be good. You can use the HDMI for video, and use the VGA 360 adapter for sound (I have my 360 VGA sound going into the input on my sound card). The DVI can be what your computer uses.

VGA isn't needed if i'm running the xbox via hdmi and i didn't see an assus monitor that ran 1200 on the list you just gave
 
The sound through the monitor is balls. If you are satisfied with that then you can go ahead and do it.

If you can't find a 1920x1200 monitor in that last link I gave you, you should shake your head and see if you can feel your brain.

no but i can easily find one just not the assus you mentioned, not sure if you were referring to your first link though
and yeah i can't deal with shitty monitor sound. do you think any of those monitors will be a fine bet?
 
i just got a 32 ich (i think) LG lcd HDTV for 500 bucks and it connects to my computer, its really good quality and really big. Plus when i get bored of computer shit i dont even have to move to play ps3
 
You can go cheaper and it won't be that bad.

Unless spending over $500 is easy for you, I would go for a $300-ish one.
 
Just make sure youre not buying a monitor with a TN panel. TN panel = Low color quality but a bit faster response time, usually in cheap monitors
 
I dont know much about monitors but make SURE it has a tilt function. dont assume all monitors do, you'll end up with books under the montior so its angles right! (acer piece of trash)
 
the dell isn't on sale anymore so it's kinda out of the picture for meit seems hard to find an hdmi monitor in the 300 range. also the asus was perfect but i measured my desk space and it won't fit so as of now i'm still leaning towards the hp one i linked above
as for the xbox i'm gonna connect it via hdmi cable to the monitor and then use the component cable to connect to my speakers but the component cable had a casing that didn't fit with the hdmi cable in there so i looked around and realized i could crack off the plastic casing, it's harmless to the cable and an awesome alternative to paying for the hdmi audio adapter from microsoft
 
Yeah, the audio re-routing thing was what I was trying to explain in one of my previous posts.

The HP will work perfectly for you. Personally, I would never spend over 350 for a 24" and under screen, but you do get what you pay for.

The reason I am a cheapskate when it comes to monitors is because they evolve just as annoyingly as any technology. My $200 acer 22" @ 1680x1050 (bought last july) will be replaced by the end of the summer by a $200-ish 1920x1200 monitor (possibly bigger, there is one that would be nice).
 
yeah but the way i view this is excellent picture quality for photos and computer work etc and then i get the hdmi for playing xbox so it's a 2 in 1 deal, i don't really watch tv so this will function as a do everything screen with great quality no matter how you use it
the only other 1920x1200 that was under 300 and had an hdmi port didn't really work for me, the rest seemed to be over 350 or way too big to fit in my fucking annoying desk space
 
word. my old LG monitor didn't tilt, such a bitch because my desk sits pretty low and my chair couldn't lower to the height of the monitor. was also a bitch when i would lay on my futon to watch movies on it, i had to stuff books under the back of it so that it could point down at me.
