New mic on a gopro?

i know i know.. get a real camera but im broke and want something to make summer edits with. I took the back off my gopro and looked at the mic, it has a black and a red wire. Im wondering if i can buy a mic and just wire it in if i run the wire outside of the grey body. Anyone think this would work? if so what mic should i use?

might be a stupid question but i figured id give it a shot

whatever you do, dont' put the gopro audio in your video. I really can't stand it when I hear gopro audio loud in edits.

My suggestion is just get an external recorder like the H1 and sync it up in post
 
thats why i wanted to run a mic outside of the gopro and mount them both on something like a steering wheel. I think it would give it much better sound, if i did have the hero 2 i could just plug a mic in but i have the first hd hero. thanks for the idea though

If I buy a new GoPro 2 at some poing I am going to try and plug my rode videomic in and see how it works.
