New laptop

i'm getting a new laptop but i'm not sure what to get. i know this:

no macs (i love macs but for me it makes sense to stick with pc)

256mb nvidia video

2gb ram

7200 rpm hd

fast processor

light-ish weight

$1500-ish or under

I'll be using the laptop for regular internet and stuff, school (college), games (hl2, css, etc.), and LOTS of video editing. Right now i have a dell 600m from like 4 years ago. even though i had a few problems with the laptop, dell was always great with warranty so i think i want to stick with dell, but ive heard good things about hp too. any suggestions would be great. thanks

how much hard drive space? sounds like you'll need a big harddrive.

I just got a new laptop too, but from mdg computers. I don't know the exact specs. maybe I'll post them later.

ive only seen up to 100gb for 7200rpm. i use external hard drives for video files, etc. but it would be nice to have a fast internal hd for normal files.

i just ordered a dell one with 160gb of harddrive and 2g of ram and all those specs you put up there...but it was quite expensive...

i've been able to find quite a few laptops with the specs i listed on the dell outlet store, like the e1505 and e1705, for under 1500.

oh i ordered the xps m1710...im not even gonna compare all the specs cause i'll fell bad if i realize i spent way more then i needed to..

too late...

yeah I won't be shopping there again. they ripped me off. and it wasn't the first time I've bought a bad computer either. stores to cross off my list: future shop, mdg..

dell is "the" shit

what other company allows you to customize for such an affordable price with out using cheap unknown brands? its the perfect company for the average consumer. now of course compared to say a pc designed for computer editing with 2 fans, 1tb hard drive, 6gb of ram, and some restarted graphics card will be better, but thats not dells aim.

any ways, i got a dell from my dads work(they bought a few to many) for 150 bucks, and just upgraded it, the only original parts left is one optical drive and the case.

as for the graphics card that the creator of this thread picked, i have had some trouble with nvidia in the past. ATI has always been much more reliable in my opinion, but if your not demanding anything to exhausting from your pc you should be set.

I need some advice, and I'm too lazy to figure out how to ask microsoft or whoever does troubleshooting.

on my computer when I'm not touching the mouse buttons or the touchpad buttons sometimes the cursor will automatically select what it's hovering over without me wanting it to. especially annoying when I'm trying to type or it clicks on spam ads etc. I think it happens only sometimes when I touch the touchpad. is there any way to disable this automatic selecting thing or disable the touchpad completely? (without using a hammer)

I just ordered an HP dv2500t. It weighs about 5 lbs. I only went for the 80 gig because I don't have that much media to store. I also just went with the Intel graphic card because I don't play pc games, but using a laptop for any kind of hardcore gaming seems stupid. Total price was $1437 with free shipping.

yeah i thought about getting the black mac which is a little cheaper than this one and about the same specs. but we use photoshop a lot so we'd have to drop more money to get it for mac while we already have it for pc and can just load it onto the new one.

you can also transfer applications/programs using microsoft's updated transfer program on their site. most of the stuff that comes in the office student package i already have on my old pc (word, excel, powerpoint) but after using the 2007 version at work i decided to get the updated versions. if you go with just the standard office pack and transfer apps later it takes about $175 off of the price.

Just picked one up last week.. it's built by FIC, who builds a good amount of other companies' laptops, so it's legit.

$800 gets you:

1.6ghz dualcore AMD Turion

GeForce 7600go w/ 256mb vmem

100gb hdd

1gb ram

dvd writer

17" widescreen

800 for the laptop~

$30 for second stick of ram for dual channel 2gb total

and you're good do go!

Hope this helps, Check the reviews~ Don't buy a mac, overpriced PC, especially since OSX will run on normal wintel hardware~

Get a Toshiba Satellite, I dunno if their other models are customizable or whats new since I got mine.

My laptop has roughly:

2 gigs ram

2.0 GHz Duo Core Pentium processor, dont remember which model

256 XTI Radeon video card

80 GB HDD

15.1" TFT LCD Monitor

Bunch of other shit, it was about 1700, but that was with an extra battery as well as the extended warranty. Without those I think it was about 1400. Thus far it has worked amazingly, never had any problems and I do alot of shit on it. It can run WoW at full graphic settings, with iTunes and photoshop open as well as IE and no lag with any of those, it runs better than most of my friends desktops.
