New Kendrick album dropping

It's different and kind of all over the place, but I am liking it so far (just started my first run through it). Reminds me of the latest Flying Lotus album (jazzy and chaotic).

To everybody saying this album is shit you are just to ignorant to appreciate the lyrics and concept or don't know what real hip hop is... Yea it didn't have as many bangers as GKMC but this album is going to change hip hop because nobody else has put out anything as lyrically deep as to pimp a butterfly period.

Shut the hell up you dirty backpacker, you're worse than the people complaining about the lack of radio playable hits.

I get his whole fucking message. I just not only did not enjoy listening to it because I felt it was overproduced, but his messages were too depressing and not something i wanna listen to. Add to that that it was not raw rapping in any way and I probably never would have listened to the album if it were not kdot in the first place.

I understand if you don't like it because it is different from anything he's done before I'm just saying that the album is far from shit

The overall message isn't even sad either and a lot of the songs sound happy as fuck like Alright and the single version of I. For me it's even gotten better when I listened to it a couple more times.

People are forgetting the purpose of an album nowa days. An album use to be a collection of songs detailing certain aspects of the artists life. The fans chose what songs were the good ones. Now they're being told what the good songs are via "radio playable songs".

Plus the album won't resonate with white kids who don't understand the struggle that Kendrick is telling through his music

I can see and appreciate what hes saying, but due to my whiteness and lack of oppression in my life i cant quite relate and therefore am not captivated.

When I listened to Section 80 I loved it on the first listen, same with Good Kid MAAD City. On the first listen of To Pimp A Butterfly I didn't really fell like I loved it, it's good but I think I didn't get it. But for me it's gotten better every time I've listend to it. It's not just good, it's great. I think what put me of in the beginning was the fact that it isn't as much of a conceptalbum as GKMC.

this

i dont even think of kendricks new album as rap and most of his messages have been spewed by many rappers before him i dont get all the hype around this album i think people are just trying to love it but there are only a couple that are actually replayable and only one that i enjoy but most of it isnt even rap so maybe it is a+ production or a+ slam poetry but im not into it.

So may people say this. Why value anybodies opinion? He's a critic, that is all.

what makes him a critic more than you or me? he seriously knows very little about the shit hes talking about.

Absolutely nothing. He can just form an articulate opinion and chooses to share it with others. What makes you say that he knows very little about music?

I'm disappointed. Really not feeling the Neo-jazz/soul vibe to almost all of the production. I don't feel like there's much momentum or crescendo on the album. It sort of starts at a contemplative level and....stays there. Until The Blacker The Berry, which is live. Just really not that into the beat selection, the live instrumentation doesn't work for me like it does on Roots projects, ATCQ, etc.

Sort of reminds me of Black Messiah, but waaaay less fun and funky. Obviously Kendrick is lyrically amazing, has really solid content, and a full formed "vision" of what he wants his music to sound like unlike a lot of rappers who are handed a beat not specifically produced for them. So, I respect the artistry, the risk-taking, the message, etc., but as a fan of music and hip-hop specifically, it just hasn't grabbed me at all which is a bummer because I'm such a fan of his music.

I'll say that "I" seems even more like a record company placating move in light of the rest of the album's sound and energy. Just not what I was hoping for, but I've only listened to it twice, so maybe it'll grow on me.

I can see disagreeing with the guy, not caring what he has to say or whatever insofar as at the end of the day someone else's opinion is just their opinion.

But, knows very little about shit he talks about? I totally disagree. He's obviously a huge music nerd and spent the majority of his life pouring over music and playing music on some level. He's got diverse tastes, and seeks out music of all kinds. He absolutely knows a lot about music, whether or not he himself is some amazing musician or not is irrelevant and is as dumb as saying that someone can't recognize or describe an athlete's skill if he can't play at the same level.

For what it's worth, I disagree with him as often as I agree, this album included. You just sound sort of....envious. I don't know why you would feel like that, but that's how it sounds.

If you dismiss all critics as "knowing very little" and that's your point, I guess whatever.

Didn't read the entire post, but I've seen reviews of bands/artists that I'm really involved with and know a fuckton about, where he completely misses the genre and a lot of underlying themes in albums where it just seems like he doesnt even understand it.

Ok, fair enough. He's not my favorite either, but he does cover a wide swath of music, so I think it's reasonable that he misses the boat on some things. I could see all critics sort of shortchanging one project or another say if it doesn't grab you initially and you don't want to devote several close listens so you kind of go with your gut or initial take. Could definitely see missing the point like that.

I think overall he seems really passionate and like he does his homework, but I see what you're saying.

Yup, me too. I like the guy. He's passionate about the music, I just cant help but notice that he covers maybe a bit too much music, and thus every review won't be 100%.

Anyways, It's just his opinions after all.
