So, I've had my current icon for quite some time now and I like it to some extent (and I reckon most people will recognize me by it), but my grandpa is just too awesome and I'd like to have him as an icon, should I?

i was thinking more along the lines of cut out ur grandpa and the smoke ring and put him in front of the flag, not blend him. if i didn't already know the story, i would be confused by ur icon

Id make the flag solid and put it behind him. The opacity makes it look like a screwed up picture and not a flag.
