I think I do it the same way as Philip Bloom. I just export as a quicktime movie. Than in quicktime do the compression and select custom frame size (1280x544) preserve aspect ratio using crop.

Anyone know of a cheap vintage macro lens that would work on a Canon?

I second this, I like primes much better than zoom lenses in most cases and they're sharper lenses
