So basically they came out with a drug that makes mice lose weight without actually having to exercise.

Sure, I suppose it's great, and hurray for science, but all I can think about is how much I hate lazy people. Get off the fucking couch and go get some exercise.

im not going to lie the only sure fire way to lose weight is to simply eat less and exercise more. none of this pill bull shit.

in most cases its just fucking lazy people and shoudnt be called obesity

but some those suffereing from obesity actually have a disease witch causes them to to be obese

This is just going to turn into a crutch for obese people. They think that just because they are obese they need this drug.

From the article, they said "We have exercise in a pill," said Ron Evans, an author of the study. "With no exercise, you can take a drug and chemically mimic it."

I really can't see that being very healthy. The long term implications of such a drug do not seem to be very good. I dunno, it just seems like a bad idea to me.

i just read about this. its a good idea but it sucks that people who are overweight will just take a pill instead of actually putting in the effort. as for really obese people it makes sense but im sure it will get abused like no other

good thing that drug will only only be given to people who actually need it, just like steroids.

I'm skinny and I eat a shitload and exercise a good amount. if they make that available to the general population, then I am suing the FDA to allow steroids.

as it stands, I hope more people become obese. my parents are the only people I know who are in good shape and thin at their age, so it runs in the family. I'm going to enjoy being fit and healthy my entire life, and I don't want some lazy people to be able to get thin without a shitload of hard work.

they'l loose the weight but wont get any healthier and feel just as weak and hungry as before.

he's saying that since steroids are only used in situations where they are needed, such as cancer and aids, that this drug should only be used in situations where it is needed, like life-threatening obesity. steroids are not open to the general population

i imagine that this drug will require a prescription...just as steroids do. im just giving the kid a hard time for saying that he is going to sue the FDA.

i agree that this drug is rediculous when it is being marketed as "exercise in a pill." gtfo the couch and do something like the rest of us....

Well, technically it isn't being advertised as that. It's not even technically a drug yet. If it is just now in mice studies it will be at least 7-10 years before it makes it to market.

personally i dont care at all i mean less fat chicks which is always a good thing and the peopel who actually exercise will be able to run and do stuff unlike the people who use the pill so its a win win situation

look at is this way, some people ewrew raised being fat, eating what they wanted and after thathappens in your life its extremely hard to loose weight, they don't leave their house becuase they are self concious of their weight, if they had a pill that could help them loose that weight they would go to the gym more once they learned to love their body they would have a second run in life ya know, some people need things like this in life so they can progress. Self conciousness is the reason alot of obease people are lazy and don't leavehoem

...and it still isn't being marketed like that. It's in mice studies in the discovery phase of R&D. It isn't being "advertised" as anything. It will be a long long time before it is ever close to being on the market and they are hardly advertising it yet. It's just a story about a new discovery. You won't see it on the market for at least 7 years if it even gets there. Lots of things can happen till then.

but even that isnt foolproof. some idiot will read that and think a smaller amount of fried chicken with fries and fried ice cream is better for him..the key is smaller portions WITH healthier eating habits ALONG with exercise.

"Advertising - The act or practice of calling public attention to one's product, service, need, etc., esp. by paid announcements in newspapers and magazines, over radio or television, on billboards, etc."

If they would have released this study and "claimed" they have some sort of great new exercise supplement there is no way that it would be plastered all over the homepages of every major news organization in the US. By dubbing it "exercise in a pill" they have gotten free "advertising" for their research. Make no mistake - they clearly knew what they were doing when they called it what they did. I'd bet they don't have any problems finding funding for the next 7-15 years that it takes to bring a drug from animal trials thru successful human trials and proper FDA approval...if it makes it that far.

It was produced by a private non-profit company known as Salk Industries. I don't think funding was an issue in the first place, and chances are it got media attention after it was put into publication in Cell, which is a biological journal. They aren't out to advertise it like you think, I can garuntee that. If anything, having the public eye on your company and your up and coming drugs is a bad thing. I know, I've seen it first hand working for pharmaceutical companies.

fair enough. i don't know anything about the company that manufactured it, or really the pharmaceutical industry for that matter. but i do know enough to know that there is a looooooooot of money involved for the company/doctors that brings this to market even if its just selling the research or whatever to some pharmaceutical giant. "exercise in a pill" sounds like the next multi-billion dollar drug...the best thing since viagra....

Personally, I care about my health and body. I could never let myself become obese. Recently I've been trying to get out swimming twice a week and eat healthier foods. It's pretty rewarding watching the weight come off and seeing yourself lookin more fit. I lost about 10 pounds since the winter AND I FEEL GREAT!

the mouse on the right must be american, the mouse on the left must be chinese and the mouse on top must be gay ( the one checking out the americans ass.)

That's rad. Less fat people is good. When they invent a pill to make people more beautiful I'll support that too.

everyone who is hating on fat people because they're lazy needs to stop, sure there are plenty of overweight people who are lazy and dont get enough exercise, and i agree america needs a lot more exercise as a whole. But plenty, if not the majority, are just born into being over weight, I'm sure everyone can think of some fat person who exercises way more than you do, but cant get off the weight, at least i know plenty myself. Most of the other fat people probably tried and realized in did no use and accepted it. Think of it this way, i can stop exercising for a month, smoke a bunch of weed and munch out, and not really notice any difference in the way i look, whilea lot of people would gain a ton of weight with that vacation from exercise. thats ridiculous how unfair that is to be born likethat, to be programed to be fat. SO anaything that will help obese people lose weight and feel better about themselves gets props from me.

That's a good point.

But like GLRunner mentionned, I have trouble thinking this pill can be healthy for you. Like, it's really fucked and I have problems comprehend it. There would HAVE to be some negative long term effects associated to its use.

What did they style this drug from? Extasy?

I would just think this drug would lead to abuse in no time. People would for sure just use it as a cosmetic drug and as an excuse to not exercise.
