New Driving Laws in CT

so starting Aug. 1 there r all these new laws for 16 and 17 yeard old drivers in ct. some of them are:

40 hours of behind the wheel instruction in order to get your license (used to be 20)

no friends in the car for a year

no driving from 11 pm to 5 am

no cell phones until 18th birthday (even tho cell phones w/o a headset r already banned in the car)

i turn 16 on July 21 so i'm pissed

does anyone else have laws that are crazy strict like these in ur state?

pretty much the same here, except 35 hours of driving and 6 months without friends. i personally dont think that kids should be allowed to get their license at 16. all the sophomores and jrs suck at driving (because of lack of experience) and crash all the time (especially the girls). i think that kids need more time driving with their parents and should have their permit for 1.5-2 years. plus, this will give them more time to mature and make better decisions.

Honestly, after doing a bunch of research into the subject, i think those are pretty good laws...especially the increase in driving hours. Our system for licensing drivers is way to loose.

yo its the same here, i think the friends law is bullshit so many people lose their license that way plus its not even that distracting. i think it should be no friends in car if your are 16/had license for 6 months and 17 and up doesn't matter.

damn man that sucks. in NY we only had to have like 12hrs practice and have a parent sign for it. i only had like 3 but my mom signed fo that shit anyways and i passed 1st time!! jea jea!! and talking on cell phones while driving is illegal, but people just do it anyway. and before your 18 you cant drive from 9pm-5am, no friends in the car, and only drive to school or work. if you take drivers ed all summer you get your full licence, but who the hell wants to waste their whole summer doing that shit. just dont get caught and youre fine.

ya sry i meant those laws are for 16 year olds. but if for example you are 17 and have had ur license for like 10 months (before August 1st) and have been driving kids around (cuz the current law is 6 months until u can drive other people), then after August 1st hits, you can't drive people for another 12 months. kinda sucks for those people.

I'm glad i live in Iowa. For 16 year olds its pretty much 20 hours behind the wheel, and the restrictions are from 12:30 am- 5:00am. When you turn 17 you either can get your full license or the restriction gets relaxed from 1-4 or something like that. Im not too sure about the 17 part.

The statistics seem to disagree. I'm 21, take driving pretty seriously, and still find that friends in the car is a distraction. I really do think being a little more experienced behind the wheel makes a big difference. That is to say, if we bumped up the driving age to 18, people would still crash in numbers analogous to a 16 year old. Its mostly about practice, not age, though age does play a small causal role.

Driving is serious business, and it pains me to see how cavalier most people are about it. I think the driving curfew is kinda stupid; I'm not sure why the time of day it his has to do with your ability to drive well, and the argument leveled at keeping kids from drinking is an unfair assumption for a legislature to make.

If I had my druthers, everyone would have to do some performance driving in both wet and dry conditions to get their license, just to really understand what cars are capable of and how to react in the inevitable bad situation.

yea ur right. i wrote a research paper recently on teen driving restrictions for school. i wanna get my license asap. but i guess a more strict system is better. i mean i kno when i drive im not gona b a crazy fool who goes 100mph.. but people out there do drive like that so the new laws are understandable.

Going fast isn't always the problem. I've done 150mph (which I would never suggest on public roads btw) but i was in a car that was more than capable, and on a road that was empty and dead straight. Its fine with me if people wreck their own shit, but most of the mistakes made by teen drivers are mistakes of negligence, not calculated risk gone awry.

I agree with you pretty whole-heartedly. Kids may not think having friends in the car is a distraction, but I've hit 100 mph without noticing just because I was too busy singing along with my friends. I definitely notice the quality of my driving take a dip when I have 2 or more kids in the car. Not to mention there's hard statistical data that says something to the effect that with teen drivers, your chance of getting in an accident increases with every passenger in the car.

In BC, Canada

you get your permit or L when you are 16

you have that for one year.

you cant drive without someone over 25 in the car, and with a valid license.

after that year you get your N

you can only have one person in the car (family members exempt) unles you have somenoe over the age of 25 in the car with a valid license.

after 2 years of that you can get your full license

Hmm, seems about the same as colorado.
Permit at 15 if you take a class. You have your permit for a year where you need to log 50 hours of driving and 10 at night. Then you get license. For first 6 months, no one is allowed in the car with you (except siblings) and you can't drive between 12 and 5am. From 6 months to a year you can have 1 person in the car, and then at 17 it is unrestricted.

Wisconsin isn't that bad... but i think most of those laws shouldn't apply to you if you get your license before the august 1st... I know sometimes if you have your license or whatever before a law changes, then those changes wont affect you, you would still be under the laws from the date you recieved your license. I could be totally wrong though

we have to do hella hours, and after you have a permit for a certain amount of time you realize that it really isnt that cool driving with your parents every were, so having a permit for more than 6 months seems retarded to me. Its really not that hard to drive, honestly.

i think that the kids going for their license where i live have to do 120hrs supervised and you are on that for a yr, then you have another 3 years on a probationary license which have random restricions like no drinking phones etc.., then you get your unrestricted one.

in new york you can get your permit at 16. you can get you license after 24 hours driving experience and taking a 5 hour class. if you get your license less than 6 months after your 16th birthday you get the resticted license. the restricted license allows you to nly drive to work and school. after 6 months you get your jr. liceense where you can drive with 2 people in the car and cant drive between 9-5. If you take drivers ed you get your full license at 17. If you dont you keep your jr. license till yor 18.

Word, friends in the car can be a huge distraction no matter what. Or kids for parents, and how old are they?

I don't think driving has much to do with age, however, I think it has everything to do with maturity. I would rather have a very mature 16 year old on the road than a stupid immature 18 year old. All driving is is constant decisions, and a more mature person would make better, more calculated decisions imo.

definitely a good idea. when i was 16, i was fuckin whippin around my car. bad idea. no accidents, but still, you little fucks need to learn how to actually drive. like, not just flooring it and shit because its fun. its dangerous and the more practice and less distractions are definitely a good thing.

Florida laws are a joke.

I got my permit at 15 after taking an online course, no on road testing at all.

I need thirty hours of driving time by 16th birthday then i can get my license after taking the road test which is a fucking joke. You pull into a parking space, back up, speed up to 20mph, stop. Then do a three point turn and your done.

You cant drive from 11-5 when ur 16 and then at seventeen you cant drive between 1 and 4.

im from CT too, but luckily ive had my licence for a while, my sister is getting fucked by those laws, but honestly, they are all resonable, what alot of kids dont realize is how dangerous a car is and how easy it is to get distracted, if your a teenager, you suck at driving, its just a given, no matter how good you think you are you suck at driving. I think the most important rule is the one about not letting other kids in the car for 6 months or whatever, other people are really distracting, I mean, im not trying to sound like a pussy, but i have had a couple times where ill be busy throwing something at someone in the back, or talking to someone and then i get distracted and almost get in an accident.....its a car, its gunna fuck shit up

I'm 20 and I swear to god if I'm driving after 11 and a cop pulls me over because he thinks I'm under 18 I'm gonna spit in his face for wasting my god damned time

in BC you get your learners when your 16 which restricts you from driving alone. you have to be with someone over 25 with there license. then when your 17 you take the drivers test and you can drive with 1 other person in the car alone. and then after 2 years you have your full license. its ghey.

Canada's laws seem pretty good, from what little I know about them. I still would like to see some variable conditions driving, like they have in Sweden, imported into the North American licensing polices (having to drive on snow/ice/wet with an instructor before a license is issued).

I think the apathy toward driving is evidenced, at least in the states, by how little respect people have for race car drivers. Those guys take those cars right to the limit of what they're capable of, only a few degrees away from a vicious crash, and hold them there for an exhausting two hours. Not to mention making snap reactions to the actions of other drivers...its absolutely unbelievable.

Same exact shit in here in CA its pretty homo if you ask me but honestly it helps more shitty drivers to learn how to drive properly so i guess its good in a way.

i'm not sure about the 50 hours, but that's how it is in PA too. get your permit at 16, drive so many hours. after 6 months get your junior license you can do whatever you want besides stay out past 11. then at 18 you are good to go for everything.

and i think those laws are good, besides the friends one. that's gay as shit, i understand they can be a distraction but that is still stupid.

andddd people in BC...i feel bad for you

So I got my license in CT about seven months ago and can drive friends now. After these rules change, does anyone know if I have to wait again to drive friends or are these laws for people that get there license after this time period????? If I do have to wait it would be another three months before I can drive people again.

Our rules are even stricter. Colorado

50 day time hours

10 night time

1 year w/ permit

No driving from 12-5am

Can't drive w/ a friend for first six months of license

There are a bunch more silly rules too.

We have like 4 or 6 points too :/

yea in washington youre supposed to have 50 hours, i dunno about in ct but here they never check to see if you actually got all 50

ahhaha in montreal when i got it a couple years ago its permit at 16 just take a test, then 8 months ( with driving school (12 hours) )of driving with someone who has had their license for at least two years till your full license

or

12 months of having permit only being able to drive with ppl who have had there license for 2 years and then you can take a test and you get your license after 12 months... no nothing no school and then your pretty much good to go no restrictions minus zero tolerance for alcohol

pretty sweet but maybe they changed

I just remembered last week in gym we watched a video on driving safety. One of the facts was if you drive with a cell phone, it decreases your driving ability to that of a 70 year old. Now, seeing as you can't drive with a cell phone in my state (CT), wouldn't that mean people over 70 wouldn't be allowed to drive?

50 in car hours in OH. but seriously who cares. nobody tallies it up. just drive a bunch and then have parents sign the thing. our curfew is a little better-12-5 and u can have one non relative in the car at a time. the gay thing is a ticket of any sort and its automatic 30 day suspension 1st offence, 90 2nd, and a year if ur stupid enough to get a 3rd. i got a 30 day for speeding when i was 17. but fuck now that im 18 i can speed all i damn well please at 3am and cops cant do shit

in maine, you have to pay $425 for drivers ed and your permit drivers ed consists of 30 hours of class and 10 hours of driving i think... then 35 hours of driving with a permit including 5 night hours or 6 months minimum of permit driving. then after your six months or 35 hours you send in for your license, wait for the test date and all that, then when you pass, its another 6 months before driving friends, and i think there is a midnight to 5am dead zone or something for the first 6 months, and it's illegal to be talking on the cell while driving if youre under 18.

haha i had my license for barely 6 months when the law started so it doesn't effect me. the people in the car law is so stupid anyway. i know i am bumping an old thread but w/e

I think in New Jersey it just changed so you still get your permit at 16 but cant get your license until your 18.

yep. i drove wayy more than that but i made up my hours anyways because i cant remember when and where exactly i drive or anything.

the graduated license thing is a bitch (no ppl in the car for 3 months w/out someone over 25, after that its just family til 6 months), but it makes sense.

w.e, i'm off that so i dont have to worry.

yea i did alot of night driving. the first time i went on the highway was at night too. if you are familiar with Connecticut highways i went on the merit parkway and I91 at night and I91 is some scary shit
