For the strobes. try having them point perpendicular to the direction the camera is.
Pick the shot.
Pick the angle.
Think about it, make changes.
Then put the strobes down. (if needed)
Shoot.
Look at your shots.
Analyze.
Make necessary changes.
I like to look at the environment, then pick the part that i think is the best to shoot. to bring that DIRT jumping mood out (example). then pick my shots around it. then if i need to, throw in the strobes. shots without the strobes are sick to. my favorite shots are about the biker (well, skier but this is general) not the lighting.
so i like to pick the best part of the area and shoot with that in mind. sometimes of you can't find anything, use the sun. shoot the shadows in the shots. Be the creative and out of the box person that is killing to get out.
