Sometime in the future, as in next spring there may be a new shop down in the west 4th area. a ski shop...something never seen in vancouver before..Yah never kno...just thought id start the rumor on here.

I wouldn't mind a new place to buy gear. It seems Vancouver is in need of a core shop. Something along the lines of a D-Structure or Corbetts(which isn't that 'core' but still). West 4th is a nice location, it puts you right on the strip of skate/snow/bike stores that already exist there. And it's easy to get to by bus, which is great for me, especially if you hire me. 3 yrs experience as a shop tech...and I'm looking for a job...

I don't know if I'd hire that guy. He's pretty indecisive. Just ask him what he thinks of Yager Bombs....you'll get a different answere everytime. And he sleeps on the ground in parking lots.

I'm glad to see some interest building here. Tosh, what I have in mind is a store that feeds off the riders input, not the other way around. Rather than setting up a shop that is based on some regurgetated retail template designed to push product, I want the demands of the skiers to dictate the structure of the store. I don't just want four walls surrounding a racks of skis and clothing, I want something people can relate to...a shop that reflects and puts back into skiing. I want to put on local contests, throw parties, sponsor athletes and movies.

Some people have mentioned that I might be letting the cat out of the bag a little too early here. I'm not too concerned about the big players stealing my idea, cause frankly I don't think they can do it like I can.

I do sleep on parking lots, but only because I tend to get played by girls quite easily. And if I'm confused about jager bombs, it's obviously because I'm still confused about what else happened that night. And you're right, I'm not really employable. No real skills, nothing. And I smell bad. And I'm ugly. I'm so not hot right now.

There isn't really a focus for the ski scene in Van.

Somewhere to come and chill would be really cool.

Oh, and while your at it, could you build an indoor skate park as well. We need one of those.

^it'd be hard to put in a decent indoor skate park, especially if West 4th is the probable location. Rent is probably pretty pricey, like the rest of Vancouver, and finding a place with enough space could be very, very hard. Westbeach has a mini-pipe though, so if you're not planning on building lots of stuff, it can be done. There's an indoor skate park somewhere just west of the downtown eastside, a block down from the #5 Orange, if you're really looking for one, and I've heard rumours of a ramp built in some office building somewhere, as a way of giving skaters something to skate, so as to not have them 'vandalizing' the outside areas of that building.

20 stair handrail for rail jams would be sick. Or any other rail for that matter.

^ yeah, that was quite tongue-in-cheek about the skate park.

I know of a couple of 'underground' small inddor parks, but I am not sure if they are open to the public.

The cract pipe got shut down for fire regulations!

you better be really fucken rich for your idea to work. not trying to be a downer or shit, but a shop which doesnt push products only and not surrounded by 4 walls of merchandise well what are you planning to have then. dude you gotta pack your shop with really cool shit. get volcom goin in your store. give it 1 or 2 years theyll have a couple skiers on the team. rip curs the shit so is sessions. you have so many brands to choose form. what you gotta do is be a product pusher not a brand pusher. if a pruduct form one companyis sick buy that and maybe whatever else is cool from the line, then find another cool company to rep. not a money maker but you gotta have a lounge area in your place. the new soure skate park in calgary has a shop attached and inside of it, its got some dope couchs and a big screen TV playin skate videos all day. That with ski videos would be THE SHIT. but your talk of comps is very very good. and movie premieres if this shop goes down I do alot of art shit and Id love to do a mural or somethin free o' charge. If you want to see my shit closer to when you know this is legit just give shout me. anyways good luck bro we need alota more people like you. cheers

Great points. super glad to hear Volcom is getting involved in skiing. What else do you guys think about products? What kind of skis do you want to see in this sort of shop? Clothing?

Another big question is what to carry in the summer. Anyone have any ideas?

There's lots of good ideas there that need to be expanded on from store layout to product selection.

and like someone else up there said, be product loyal not brand loyal, dont carry shit.

Support the locals too, from clothing designers, to ski manufactures to video producers.

 
Freeride and downhill mountain biking is growing exponentially, that would be a good summer sport to get involved in.

its a tough thing to do. ive been looking into it for a while, and its not as easy as it sounds hooking up every company's products for your store. plus for a location on west 4th or downtown would be huge cash up front, or big time loans. And its hard to secure money for a venture such as this.

the north shore might also be a location to look into (obviously downtown somewhere would be sicker, but still) and what was said above, you definetely gotta push the product, and more importantly the sport to be successful. In this industry (which is still super small) pushing the sport is important. Anyways, best of luck to you, give me a little while (need huge money) and I'll be trying along side you.

sounds sick dude. sell skates along with skis. that would take you through the summer. definitely have a lounge. that gives a place for people to chill and if they feel comfortable it creates a feeling of shop loyalty. i know giving shit away on discount doesnt sound like the best money maker but if you do whatever you can to set people up and they could be regulars it will pay off huge in the long run. lots of comps are good. its all about the customer service, go out of your way to get shit to people. props.
