New car, need help

So I'm getting a new car and I need:

good gas - 30+mpg preferably

LOTS of room (small SUV or wagon would be good)

Not expensive on repairs (compared to my volvo)

needs to be able to take a beating

AWD or 4WD (fwd would be OK, but not the best)

Not ugly

go!

hmm, good to know.

let's throw that limit to 10k, see if there's anything decent. I'm getting a new car for graduation, so this will be for the next 3 years only.

which is precisely why I made a thread - I can't think of much either, besides the Hyundai Sante Fe and a Focus wagon... two more reasons I made the thread.

ford escape, it doesnt get 30+ but low to mid 20s.

maybe a VW but unless its a wagon its not gonna be too roomy.

any car with a rack you could put a thule box on would dramitcally increase room when you ski, think of that?

Ya I did think of that - I'll be getting a thule/yakima rack for my bike/kayak anyways, but I was hoping that I could find something big enough to begin with.

well post em anyways - I'd be OK with 20 but I put 30 out of optimism. Anything would be better than my 3 gear volvo wagon from the stone age.

ive got a benz E320 wagon, its AWD, has a shitload of space (3rd row of seats) and i get decent gas, on long trips i average around 23-24mpg with a rack on my car. It has decent power but nothing that crazy, and you can pick them up fairly cheap when they are old, mines an 01' with 100,000 miles, its only worth about 10g's now but it still has a shitload of life left in it

probably expensive to fix, right? I'm transferring out of state for school in the fall and if it breaks down, I don't want to have to call my parents for cash to get it fixed.

well it depends where you get your car serviced, if you go to a benz dealership they will charge you 5x as much as anywhere else, i go to the garage down the street from my house and nothing has been too expensive, also a ford escape would be pretty legit, then get mid 20 mpg

oh I'd never go straight to the dealer. Thanks for the info. I was thinking a Ford Escape; my cousin just got one this week, I'll have to call her and see how she likes it.

Don't be a pessimist!

I know, I'm looking for a good mix of everything I'd like. Truly, I'm just looking for something that ISN'T RWD.

New questions:

On average, how long do Fords, Toyotas and Hondas last? (I know it's a variable question, but I'm using the logic that says volvos last forever... which is like 250-300k miles)

go with the subaru, i have a 98 forester and love it, plenty of room for skis and everything inside and gets mid to upper 20s for gas. I got mine with 65k for 5,000 i have only had to put about 500 worth of repairs in it since last november

if you want a suv=room, jeeps with a 6cyclinder can get 20-22 mpg highway, and can def be had for under 10k, let alone 20k. 4 runners.

since your parents are buying your car, why not get something bigger and better in the snow and other bad weather, and pay a bit more for gas. the difference in 5 mpgs isnt that much money.

we've had 3 shitty jeeps (new) in the last 7 years, so no jeeps for me. I'm not asking my rents for something bigger because I don't want a big car and would prefer to have a sedan, but I need something to carry a drumset and multiple hockey bags, hence the desire for another wagon.

chevy tahoe z71...awesome suspension package and 4x4!

my dad has an 01 suburban and it has 223,000 miles on it and hasn't had a real problem with it.

I know, and I appreciate your input. You mentioned the Suburban after telling me to get a tahoe, so it's only safe to assume that you were pointing out another option.

i mentioned the suburban because a tahoe is a suburban with it's ass chopped off.

and i wasn't pointing out another option. the suburban's and the tahoe's have the same motor in them...pretty much same everything.

since you seem to not really know what you want, hit the dealerships, asking NS isnt gonna get you anywhere faster tahn hitting the streets.

I'll hit the streets when my dad says "K, let's go get the new car." I'm wasting time on NS trying to figure out what to look at until later this week when my dad buys me one.

that's actually what I'm planning on getting - a v70xc, but I was curious to see what other people liked within my parameters.

I didn't mention it because I already have all of the info on it and have been looking at them for a while - figured I'd start from scratch on here.

^ there u go.

also keep in mind if u plan to use a roof rack sorta thing like a Thule, its gonna cut down ur gas millage.

subaru most definitely we have 2 of them one has over 300k miles (a manual) and the other has over 180k miles(automatic) theyre both 97s i believe and running strong, the one with 300k+ miles has obviously been through more so a lot of repairs have been done, but its still running strong. very good and trustworthy cars.
