Word on the street is a new DSLR will be released on the 18th. Its been said to either be a new 1d/1ds successor or the new 5dmkIII.

Total scepticism, but possible suggested specs are:

One model which is integrates the 1D and 1Ds

18 million pixel full-size sensor

61 focus points.

14 fps (12 fps with AF)

New battery, but it will also be able to use older ones

150-200 grams heavier than the current model

ISO range: 100-51200

Fixed LCD monitor

Street price of about 600,000 yen body only

New 24-70mm lens with a price of about 200,000 yen

October 18 announcement, scheduled to be released mid-March of next year

Have not heard a suspected price? Will have to depend on what line it fits in.

Thoughts?

My opinion...

The 5dII has effectively replaced the 1ds. 1dIV is still new enough. My only guess would be a replacement to the 5d with actual autofocus and drive capabilities, as well as an improved movie mode.

lolololol noooo, the 5d is lacking in 1 major thing: professional build

saying the 5d has replaced canon's flagship model is incredibly ignorant, just because they are both full frame doesn't mean it has come anywhere close to replacing the 1ds series. the only reason you might think that is because you see more 5d2's around, well look at the price difference, there is an obvious reason why.

I would love to see the 1d/1ds get combined and have canon do away with the aps-h sensor size though.

I'll be interested to see what the 5d3's(if it is announced) real specs are, with the rumors of the d800's specs being somewhat baffling

hell, maybe they will just pull a leica and release a medium format sensor in a DSLR style body, that would be incredibly sick...if it didn't cost $22,000

3 major rumours obviously are a new hybrid 1d hopefully full frame, 5dIII, and a few people have been saying it might be a whole new line ^like balto said with the medium format. I'd love to see a full frame camera with real drive around 8-10fps.

and for those who are not aware of what i am talking about, I'd like to present to you the leica s2

I would give up a kidney to own that camera

Seems kind of redundant to me unless you are shooting industrially and need to have images that are billboard ready...
But nonetheless, doesn't 14fps entail the use of that translucent mirror shit that failed miserably in the new sony DSLR a few months back? That would suck.

You don't just buy an s2(or any MF system) unless you need it the size and detail it provides. What might be redundant to you is a requirement for others.

Completely redundant, but who cares, its one amazing camera, lieca's are the cream of the crop. I can hopefully one day afford an m series rangefinder like an m3 or m4.

Sony DSLR's are a lot less powerfull than canon and nikon, wouldn't be suprised if canon could do 12-14 fps with a regular mirror, they already have ten at 1.3 crop.

all seems very practical, ive heard the lines will merge. new 24-70 f/2.8 IS i would assume for the said price ($2800) but it sounds like it will be a sick camera. only way it affects me is by bringing down the price of the 1d mkiii :) hopefully 10 fps by next summer!

Never gonna happen, full frame sensors are expensive, so putting one in a 7d would drive the price up quite a bit, up into 5d range, at which point you would just get a 5d. Plus the 5d3 will in all likely hood have 1080p60, but will cost somewhere in the 2800-3500 range

Fine. I'm all for a 5DIII then, I just want a full frame sensor with 720p60. I don't see the 1080p60 happening in the case of 5DIII but oh well I won't be bitching if they do go with 1080p60.

No way. APS-H is awesome.

I'm really curious as to what they're going to release

- 5D mkIII

- 1D/1Ds super camera

- 7D mkII

- 'New line' (unlikely if you ask me...)

I'm hoping for kind of 1D upgrade, dropping the price of the older APS-H sized camera's.... I wouldn't be able to afford any new one anyways...

Oh it will. It's already available much cheaper on a lot of sites (I think 'only' 2g's), so we're heading the right way.

well yea... 2g's.. i mean thats a good price, but being at boarding school, i cant have a real job. hard to get the money for one. Hopin it goes down quite a bit

Whatever canon releases, it's predecessors will drop in price. An example would be the 5d mk1's going for like 1400.

Meh, I find it pretty pointless. When I had a 1d, I either wished it was a 1.6 for zooms, or a FF for wide angle. Pretty sure canon is the only brand that does it as well(correct me if i'm wrong, im not completely up to date on nikon's line), so I wouldn't be surprised if they ditched the format. Full frame is just...better, some might not think so, but you really have to use it to see why. Once you go FF, going back for anything other then the added reach just doesn't seem like an option. Plus you can just use a 1.4/2x TC to get back that distance, and those only run about $200 on the used market.

To the guy that mentioned the 5d price dropping, it already dropped to 2k in canada for a brand new body. And you have to remember that for quite some time, it will stay the same price. The new camera(what ever it may be) won't start to ship till 2012 in all likely hood, and even then for a while it will be very hard to get a hold of, so canon can and will continue charging as much as they can for the 5d2.

yeah i hate non FF. I also wish I could buy a good DSLR for the same price as I got my 1N for. That thing was a tank, water resistant ad all. If only i'd had an L lens. that said I on;y have a bronica now.

People are getting way too tied up in the specifications of cameras nowadays, and how expensive they are. In the end what it comes down to is glass quality and skill. A better camera is obviously better, but at what cost? I'm constantly amazed by the results that can be achieved with low-end DSLRs (I use a Canon XS, not exactly cream-of-the-crop). A parallel can be drawn between photography and driving nowadays. As technology improves (CVTs in cars, faster processors in cameras), our connection with the nature of what we're doing is waning. People nowadays know little of car control as manuals are getting phased out. Cliche as it seems, cars are doing the driving now. The same seems true for cameras.

Obviously there are arguments to be made for the other side too, since improved technology results in higher quality photos which are more marketable, and higher FPS is so key in sport photography. I love new technology and innovations as much as anyone, and I'm certainly psyched to hear that Canon is coming out with something new. I just believe it's important that we don't forget about photography as a means of self expression and art.

Pretty slow day at work, thought I'd get my two cents in.

Truth. People tell me "your camera takes the best pictures!", yah it has good colours, cus I tell it to do that. A fast shutter and a gillion megapixles will only get you so far.

You aren't paying much attention to canon if you can honestly say that the 5dIII might be announced this week. The 5dIII will not come out next week, next month, and not even until next year (March 2012) at the earliest, that has been pretty obvious for a long time.

Oct. 18th will most likely be new EOS-1Ds (most dated in the line and most capable so it will probably get a light makeover).

October 26th Canon printer announcement.

November 3rd (day of RED Scarlet announcement) Canon will announce their 4K video camera.

5dII is a few years old, IMO, its still an amazing cam, and I would be stoked if the 3 came out, but yah, its probablys a 1ds or 1d/s hybrid.

I have a $4,500 camera body that has no autofocus, no viewfinder, no color correction, no ISO adjustments, no metering, and can't take batteries. I can't even click the shutter without a cable!

But I generally agree with what you're saying, photography is 90% the photographer and 10% the camera. But goddamn it feels good to photograph with something super nice.

...I'm an idiot I guess. Oh well. Stats in the OP are confirmed by canonrumors. Gonna be a 1-series and coots about $6k

I think it's silly to spend that much on a DSLR (except maybe sports photography). If i were to drop $10k on a kit i would rather spend that money on large format. Can explain how this is any better than the current 1D?
