New Boots? Salmon Quest Pro and Access

Im looking at getting some new boots in the next few weeks. I really like Salomon boots and have been looking at the Quest Pro 90 and the Quest Access 80.

I have wide feet and I know the Access has a 104mm last and has a guarantee for comfort. Whereas the Pro has a 100mm last, however offering better performance and a mouldable liner.

What boot would I be better off choosing? Would be great to hear from anyone who uses these boots!

I own the Quest Pro 90s. I like them, the liner formed to my feet easily and they're very comfortable. The only down side is since I have wide feet I got a boot that didn't fit super tight, as the liner formed to my foot it got a little bit loose. Nothing major, but I can jiggle the foot around a bit. Overall though, I really do like the boots. They've been holding up well. I usually ski big mountain and steeper terrain, and I like to ski aggressively fast. I haven't done much park stuff to comment on how they hold up in there.

Thanks for the advice, they sound like a good boot as I mostly ride big mountain. Regarding the size I am a UK10 (US11), that converts to 29.0 Mondo. would you recommend that I size up to 29.5 like I usually do due to wide feet or just stick with 29.0?

Also what flex do you have?

I recommend you go see a proper bootfitter before you buy the wrong boot in the wrong size.

You guys are ripping big mountain lines in 90 flex boots, eh? ;)

All jokes aside, do not buy a boot based on what someone else uses. Buy the boot that is right for you. That means the boot should match your footshape, be the right flex for your needs (height, weight, strength, personal preference), and have the right features you want (walk mode, replaceable soles, etc. etc). Go to a reputable boot-fitter and have him assess your foot, ankle, and other biomechanic factors and let him select the best boot for you. Also be sure to get footbeds, as they keep your foot in the proper position while skiing, which is needed for being comfortable. DO NOT have a certain brand or type of boot in your mind when you walk into the store- this will most likely lead to you buying the wrong boot.

1. go to boot-fitter

2. listen to boot-fitter

3. buy what boot-fitter recommends

4. also buy footbeds (not getting footbeds will be a waste of a ski boot purchase)

5. go have fun

104 mm is a really wide last, I would get measured and make sure you really need a boot that wide before buying it. Guaranteed comfort in a super wide boot for someone with average foot/ankle isn't actually going to be comfortable or perform well. A "guarantee for comfort" means literally nothing as far as ski boots are concerned.

you actually will most likely want a 28 shell. never use those conversion charts, they are almost always wrong.

source: am bootfitter

also, there is no difference in length between a 28 or a 28.5, just the boot board inside of the shell will be a different height or the liner will be a different size or both

FYI - the shell, boot board, and liner are the same between whole and half sizes (pretty sure Scarpa is the only exception to this still because their size split is on the whole size, meaning 26.5 & 27.0 are the same). The change comes with the thicker insole or a shim under the insole to create the difference between a whole and half size. Ultimately it does not matter which one you buy.

i have never seen a shim underneath an insole from the factory, but the thickness of the insole may be different, most shops only stock the .5 sizes of a boot anyway, since there is so little difference in them

You are not skiing aggressively on 90 flex boots that don't fit.

That's been Atomic's strategy for about 6 or 7 years now, Salomon is on board too (depending on the model family). But you're right- most boots imported into North America are the half size so it would be rare to see.

I take it I was wrong about the boots. I'm not super into the know how behind them, I just saw a question about a boot that I wear with a problem (wide feet) I also have. I guess I learned something new. Unfortunately, I have less money than sense and I'll have to make do with my boots that I have.

Anyone who "shreds" big mountain and steep terrain in a 80 flex boot either weights like 100 pounds or is just a horrible skier
