hey guys, i posted this on pink bike and i havent gotten many responses, so any of you downhiller newschoolers, please help me...

as seen on pinkbike:

"hey guys, nnneeewwbbb here, and i am looking for a new bike. i dont know much about the this site, but i am on newschoolers alot, so im formiliar with forums. my freind is a good downhiller and he wants to get me into it. he has a big hit 2 and can do 35 foot jumps (dont know if thats good) and im going to try to evenualy ride with him. we live in NM, and so we can ride at pajarito, so a bike to suite that type of riding. i took his bike and hit a 15 foot double, and about a 5 foot drop. i dont know if that is useful but i will definatly do more if i have my own bike. i have a 5 inch suspention xc bike that i bottom out whenever i try anything freeride related, and i know im going to brake it like that. i want coil shocks and a fair mount of travel, because i want to get good. i get a good deal on gaint, santa cruz, kona, iron horse, yeti, and a few other brands not including specialized, so DONT RECOMEND SPECIALIZED OR JAMIS. i am 5' 8" or 9" and 102 pounds. i was looking at the iron horse sunday, the new kona downhiller, oh, and i can get intense too, so maybe one of theirs. thanks for any help! pm me or post what you think...

any other info needed?

i would spell check, but i cant figure out how to right click on the mac i have..."

update: im looking at the iron horse sunday elite, any comments on that?

thanks

Iron Horse sucks, Kona sucks. get a Yeti or an Intense if those are the other bikes you're looking at, Yeti is the best out of the bikes you listed.

and 102 pounds?!!!

^ iron horse and kona dont suck. yeti does make very good bikes but to keep them im good runging condition you will need to do a of matainance.

it seems like your going to be more into the freeride end of things? it may not look like it be there is a rather big difference between between a full on dh bike and a freeride bike. i would look in the giant glory fr or faith. also intense make some really nice fr bike but they tend to be on the pricy side.

actually they wont suck after they loose the DW link they just wont exist in the DH world. they have decided to move into the more profitable world of selling crappy bikes at dicks and other places like that

they stopped making the faith about 3 years ago, but it was definitely a sick bike. also, this guy says konas don't suck. this is only true if you buy garbanzos or supremes, all the regular versions come with very low-grade components, for instance, the worst possible hardtail you can buy is the Kona Stuff, but one of the best possible bikes you can buy is a Stab Supreme, the only problem being that konas are horribly overpriced.

if you're looking at freeride, I'd jump for the last Faith 3 or Glory, if you're looking at DH race, go for a Yeti. Up until about a month ago, I was sponsored by Sun Ringle (Sun Rims), and competed weekly in downhill races on a customized Rocky Mountain Switch 2.0, the only bikes I was afraid of were the Yetis.

oh and a tip, if you get sponsored, try not to get sponsored by a rim company, they will work your ass off to the point that you simply quit and tell them to go fuck themselves...

def looking for a more freeride style bike, that is why i mentioned the sunay elite. i will look into the gaint, and i am demoing the yeti this weekend... could i use the yeti of jumps at all? another posibility is the intense uzzi. when does the bike expo thing wiht all the 09 bikes happen? thanks for all the help, and keep it coming!

isnt it funny how i get a better response on a SKIING forum, lol!

Yetis are probably a bit too heavy to do any decent jumping on, Giant makes good bikes for jumping. the Uzzi is a very good choice if you want to be mixing freeride and dirt jams, but watch out for the price it may be a bit over the top.

uzzi has a small rear shock, and is probabley expensive, so i will look elsewere... what does the glory weight? what about a v10 with totems?

Id recommend the Iron Horse sunday, but you want to do some freeride, and the sunday is an all race machine, and thats it. The Kona stinky is an awesome all around bike, and the Giant Reign x1 may be able to handle everything, its an awesome bike with great pedaling platform. But like Rob said: Get a Yeti. They are amazing, I had the pleasure of being able to ride a Yeti 575 ( mind you a XC/Trail bike) and took it on all the downhill trails at Vail (Yeah i know, I

wow It really wont let me most, Spark notes of what I wanted to post: Even a yeti trail bike could handle DH, and keystone was closed that week so I couldnt ride key

if you're going to be doing freeride mixed with DJs, uzzis rear shock will do you fine, but if it is too expensive then definitely look at the glory, the weight will depend on the size that you buy, you will probably want a large. the faith was better though, so if you can find the last faith 3 in good condition, i think it would be perfect for you, a friend of mine rides one and he has let me ride it before, the suspension is amazing. i'm not going to reccomend Santa Cruz unless you plan on riding DH race, and Totems are more of a DH fork than anything else, so a V10 with Totems is more or less a race-specific bike.

dude im down with race specific, as long as it can do some freeride, too. im more worried about suspention for drops and some of that stuff, as aposed to dj courses. ive heard totems are for freeride too, but ya they are mega burly.

like i said, i'm not going to recommend a race-specific bike, especially if you're just getting into this. a freeride bike would be better if you're looking at drops though, the head angles are better suited for that kind of impact than for a race bike. and unless you plan on hitting drops that are over 30 feet, Totems are overkill, I can drop 47 feet and jump 60 with a Marzocchi 66(7.5 inches) if I stick the landing(claim). my buddy drops 10-footers on a hardtail with 5 inches in the front, and he can stick it without bottoming out the fork.

drop 47 ft????????????? geeezzzeeesus

iron horse 7 piont sound like a good bike too, another option? sorry for thowing so many bikes out there

iron horse are heavy as hell and the components are made specifically for iron horse bikes at a cheaper cost and quality than you would find on other brands, companies will do this often, for instance, with forks, where even though your fork may have the same name as the fork on your friends bike, they are different because the brand that you bought the bike from requested that fork from suspension company in a lower-quality condition so that they could lower the cost.

oh and the 47-footer (claim) i dropped was in Utah last season, same area where Red Bull Rampage used to go down. didn't bend a rim, didn't crack the seal on my fork, didn't bail. then again, my bike is fine-tuned to fit my style and my body perfectly.

As stated already, the Yeti would be a good choice. I seem to remember that Santa Cruz makes really light bikes, so you might one to go for Santa Cruz, especially since you're so light. And you could definitely be drinking whole milk.
By the way, to right click on a mac, press control and click at the same time.

all new macs have right click built into the mouses, goto settings and change them so it works. Unless ofcourse your on a 8 year old imac haha

thanks for the help on the right5 click. i dont think i can get a faith for a discount, because it is not a new bike. anyone else vouch for the gloory, or the yeti, or the santa cruz? thanks for all the help thus far...

ok, last bike im going to bring up... what about the kona stab deluxe?

gimme some imput on that bike!

i know you mentioned it earlier, but give me some more imput!!!

plz...

the stab is a lot like the stinky but more for hucking(i think?). If i were you though i would get a kona cowan ds(dual suspension) its beefy and you can use it for dh/freeride but if you get into dirtjumping or slopestyleish stuff its legit for that.

Correct me if im wrong, but isnt the Cowan pretty short travel? Its like 4 or 5 inches.

Shame you cant get Transitions OP. THe bottlerocket is such a sick bike

If you can aford it get the new Intense 6.6 SS. Its a slopestyle bike so its alittle smaller but its beffy as hell and probly one of the most versitile bikes around and can handle anything you will through at it. I would buy it if i had some monney. Check it out
