New Big Mountain ski for me...

So here it is: I have a ski for park and everyday cruising (faction wednesdays) but I need a new big mountain charger since I sold my seths and my 193 Amplid Royal Teddys were lost when I tomahawked a 100 metre 55 degree rock face. (Yes it was deliberate and yes it was the preferable option!)

Anyway, I'm around 6'1, normal weight I guess for that size and would like to buy a ski that essentially is good for skiing big lines fast, can dabble in a bit of BC freestyle, is nimble enough for trees and is reasonable to ski on hardpack. I would definately describe myself as an aggressive skier, am confident hitting cliffs up to about 40 feet and like to blend charging burly lines with mellower powder fields on occasion. In other words I need one ski to do what 193 Amplid Royal Teddys and 179 Seths did. My question is, is there one ski that can do all this?

I like the idea of Ninthward Tha 187s or maybe 191 Ants. I'm keen to stick to smaller manufacturers as my experience with Faction and Amplid has been exceptional. I anyone has any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
 
I think there are two good options for you: The first is the Scratch BC. It is beefy enough for the pow, managable enough in trees and can handle the high speeds, yet have the freestyle ability to ride a bit of park and spin cliffs. Another great option is the Prophet 100. Similar to the BC with slightly more flex and sidecut - but stiff enough to charge. I don't you want ANTs if you want to drop trees as well, but I could be wrong. Just my two cents. Good luck!
 
cheers dude, will def look into prophet 100s. seems like a good choice. not keen on scratch bcs as i'm really looking for a small/core company. long story as to why. any thoughts on thas?
 
surface live lifes possibly? never ridden them heard great things from reliable people though. plus surface is about as small/core as you can get.
 
I completely agree. Go for the Ants if you want something stiffer, or Gotamas if you want a softer ski. Either way you'll have a kick ass pair of skis!
 
This years Gotama are pretty close to an ANT in terms of stiffness...past years this wasn't the case, but I would try em both if you can.
 
why not buy another pair of Factions?

ANTs are sick and fit the bill, but they lack a little sidecut. You could do a pair of Tha 187s if you can find them anywhere, or maybe next year's Nick Greener Pro, which is basically a 190cm tha 187.

Sound good?
 
Ninthward makes good ski, but if you have any problem with them your out of luck.

thanks for the input guys. i quite like the idea of the surfaces (live lifes i assume) but am i right in thinking they are more bc freestyle than big mtn? i wouldn't mind a review of some of the skis suggested by someone who rides them. i'm especially interested in the factions, ants or tha 187s but any more input would be welcome
 
i got the 08 karhu version of the prophet 100's, same exact ski... definately burly enough to charge, i havn't skied them yet, but it appears as if they'll do well in just about everything.
 
I love the ANTs but he says nimble enough for trees and reasonable on hardpack. ANTs are anything but nimble and they have almost no sidecut! (27 m right?) The Gotama is only a slightly better choice, but I still think the Prophet 100 with its more generous sidecut and lighter weight.
 
i have a pair of 05-06 ants skied half a dozen times id let go cheap, my riding changed alot and they dont do what i want but yeah, like 300ish
 
If you charge hard, from myu expierience, ( as much as i hate to say it, Gotama's may not do it[Not personal, but a few of my friends]) Ant's sound pretty darn good. As close as You'll be gettign i think.
 
so ants seem like a popular choice. i'll give em a shot see if i like them. just as a matter of interest, who knows what about hellbents? i'm about 1% likely to consider them but anybody know how they ride?

stiff underfoot but soft in tip and tail...probly not your best chargin ski. they ride longer than their lengths, and are pretty fuckin fat(122 underfoot) they have a little more sidecut than ants but not a ton.
 
yeah i gotta agree that seths are super fun but i'm lookin for something a little more burly having had seths for a season- maybe a little fatter and stiffer, and like i said, ideally a core company.
 
Hellbents are floppy soft. Not a big mountain ski. And with the massive rocker, not that great on hardpack. The ANT sounds like the ski for you. There is some guy selling a brand new pair for 500 CAD around here, forgot his name. Pretty decent deal I'd say.
 
Big Troubles are dope for charging really fast but they arent very fat. ANT, gotoma, the NEW gun lab, prophet 100, iggys, capitals, and the 189 seths would probably be pretty good
 
heres my 2 cents worth

ANT- long, stiff-ish, kinda no sidecut, but if you really want to charge, go for it. you can throw it around if you need to, but dont plan on doing it alot.

190-193 EHP- Depends on hwo big you are, and what type of versatility you need. the 190 is wider and softer, and obviously short. more forgiving in resort type areas. muuuch bigger sidecut than the 193. the 193 from what iv heard is a big motherfucker of a ski. not the length really, just the way it rides. insanely stable, and it does not turn. this is truely a BIG mountain ski, or someone who just likes to go straight and haul.

190 Gots- sick ski, stiff for a twin, and the 190 barely even has a twin. seems more like a gradual rise till the tail of the ski. but whatever, a true big moutnain ski shouldnt really have a twin, so were ok. nice sidecut, especially in the 190. the Gots are known for theyre versatility, so they turn, and theyre total crud buster, but the stiffness and the length really let you open it up to huge speeds on big faces and ish.

189 Seth- muuuch different than the 179. stiffer, obviously longer, and used to have a different construction material i think(?). anyway, completely different ski. i cant really describe it a whole lot, but if you are 6'1 and were riding a 179(which i own) the 189 is going to be much more enjoyable.

191 Thugs- worth checking out, kinda soft, but soemthing about these skis interests me. check with Vicious, pretty sure he owns/owned a pair and hes the same size as you.

Squads- dunno about the length, iv never skied them, but worth a shot for a directional big moutnain insane-ness ski. heard only awesome things about this ski, stiff, likes to go fast, and hauls ass through the crud and mank. you see soo many pairs at big mountain comps, its pretty cool rossi struck it that good on them.

--lastly--

Legend Pros- again, i havnt skied these, as well as the squads, but these iv heard are amazing. i think Enigma rides them, and he has a quiver of 189 Seths and Mojo 90s, and he cant bring himself to go back to any of them because the LPs are so stable and sick. awesome ski, and itll be a breeze taking them back in bounds and onto groomers. sick all around ski.

that was alot of writing, but i didnt feel like doing physics.
 


forgot 4 skis.

Movement Goliath- sick new directional big mountain ski from a promising company. havnt skied it, but its worth looking into.

head 103- dosnt matter what year really, but they are a super straight skiing ski that is another one of those no-nonsense busting through everything ski. keep in mind, these things do nooot like to turn.

K2 Coomba- new ski to come out this year, seems to me like its a big mountain ski that can handle itself pretty much everywhere. zero camber i think, and like a 186 or something, i cant remember, but its supposed to be sick, so its worth checking out next year. also, some proceeds go to Coombs' family which is sick.

Nordica Blower- Talk to Vicious about this ski, seems tight. big ski, wide, long, and stiff, but it still seems to have enough sidecut to be manageable most places too.
 
cheers ak, some good thoughts but not really narrowing much down! i guess i'm at the age old ns problem, every ski comes well recommended and i'll just have to test a handful at start of next season. thanks for all your views guys
 
I have some 183cm Head M103s I will let go cheap. Super beefy, huge turn radius. The running length on them is long than on 191cm Ants. Let me know if your interested
 
blower is ridiculous and the graphic for next year is sick. they absolutely rip, and they hold up on hardpack too. i snagged a demo pair for a trip to vermont from my rep and go lucky with a sweet late season powder day at jay, made the whole mountain butter, even worked well in the trees

coomba is gonna be sick too, but its not a twin, if thats what ur looking for.

i agree on the prophet 100, i thought about getting a pair for next year, but decided i wanted something a lil softer and ended up ordering anthems, but thats just me.
 
haha the LG is sweet. I believe the turn radius is around 50-60m!

Honstly....iggy FFGS or FFL would be the ticket

there all talking shit, you wanna get some blades, apparently they are insame in the pow and super lightweight for putting on your pack, also you will look the shit. having got pretty close to death the other day i would suggest you start again at ipswich dry ski slope and i will handle all the sick lines.

high society frs look pretty awesome, beefy enough to handly pow,not sure if there stiff enough for the biry lines but theyre great for taking into the park whilst being fat enough to float
 
scratch BCs are pretty good for dabbling in everything.

that or the prophet 100, if you want something lighter.
 
i've got ants and i'll never get rid of them. most bomber ass big ski i've ever ridden. they are totally manageable for resort skiing too. i've even skied park a fair amount on mine. long, fairly stiff, burly, fast. unless you're looking for something that's not a twin (squad) i can't think of a better charger ski for someone your size.
