New-Age Edits

I was watching some pretty sweet edits today and noticed that lots of filming styles tend to be pretty similar, no hate at all, as I film in a similar way, but it left me wondering, do the people want to see change? And if so what do you want? Anyone have any ideas that could revolutionize the media the ski industry creates?

I just feel that skiing to music shouldn't cut it anymore for anyone who is serious about editing. Edits should have a feeling and maybe even a story behind them. Having each shot feed off the one before would be cool. Great b-roll is everything, old cartoons of skeletons dancing is not great b-roll. In general I just want to see more edits that are planned out with shots that are framed better. I'm getting tired of follow cams.

My thoughts exactly

slow mo and dramatic music are lame and cannot carry an edit anymore, everyones seen it all and you have to explore other places to bring new stuff in

follow cams are tight but the problem is that most videos today are all follow cams. people need to learn how to use their camera before they strap it on their glidecam, would love to see more creative shots and more of a mix of follow cams, fish, longlens and wide angle. but realistically it wont happen because the average filmer on ns is just a park rat who picks up a camera for the first time, hits record and follows their friends around, ignoring how to actually use a camera

Standard park filming and editing practices have just become too standardized and formatted in general. Most kids have nearly identical filming setups to the next, and also go about using it in a similar method. It's not a bad thing, however "follow the leader" can lead to a lack of diversity in content. I do think new styles and techniques will continue to develop pretty shortly here though, as it already has been lately.

I do what I think is different, but to be honest most folks hate it. Way long and .......................well you tell us what you think.

Honestly I love your videos way more than a typical edit. It just shows how skiing is supposed to be fun and not to serious.

Damn straight. When you have helis filming helis for a shot....gay. Private park shoots need to fuck off and die too. Kids, if someone or film crew shows up to YOUR park and tells You you gotta take a hike - burn that shit down. Edits swervinin in and out of other people on the mtn or in the park or in the shot - Fuck yea! who gives a shot. now dudes who like to watch skate vids..now wouldnt all those Gonz NYC street segments suck if they shut down the block like a fucking Hollywood movie shoot!? Epic shit sucks.

hmm i feel what you're trying to do, and i think the idea is pretty cool, but there is way to much trash footy in there and now more than ever people never take the time to watch long stuff. It's all about the short banger edits. Which I don't really like. I'm all for an edit with a real work of art in the editing, thought out, and obvisouly just good shots, creative, but not too much either. Croll people, fucking C roll

Agreed. Group of snowboarders at my mountain act like they own the place. Luckily no one takes them seriously.

Yes, I hear you. I was still learning this cam was new to me so I had some bad shots for sure.

The early part of the video is kinda slow, but it gets better.

This is the kind of video folks can crack some beers to or whatever and just chill and watch for an entire hour!

I did mostly follow cam last year. I will do more of those Real Laps this year too, but will do more standing around videos if there is enough traffic.

Thanks. I know the video has some not so hot stuff, but it gets better deeper into it.

I did edit it down as well to "Best of Closing Day" Even put on some music which I rarely do!

i want to see people putting together several tricks in one run. It's always one trick on one rail/jump, and then it cuts to the next one. Are people not able to land 2 tricks in the same run?

It's called slopestyle

I wanna see more edits like behind the scenes of good company one where there's more of went into the shot and no dramatic music

No its not. There's a big difference in going ham down an entire park, and hitting a couple rails in a row. Most edits consists of single hits on one feature, and the only flow is from the music.

I did a series called "Real Laps". Some do and some don't and some go down! All real and no cuts!

Okay, maybe you have not seen one. Here you go.

The music HAS to fit the skiing and editing.

There are more at my videos here from my NS page videos. Snowboarders must be seen from my YT Channel and some of those are super fun.

I honestly think follow cams are the best way to film & watch skiing and that is way they are always used. Easy to film, you get in a shit load of laps, and you get to hit the whole park. to watch, you miss none of the feature, you get to see how fast the skier is actually going. its just an all around win win.

The problem is glide cam follow cams. They are just so boring. I honestly get a better kick out of someone using just a freehand grip getting up close and personal, acting reckless

Scrappy Joe for filmer of the year

.

Standing on the knuckle to actually get a good angle works if you're not using a gopro.

I'll go for that. I just hand hold my cam. And I love Scrappy Joe!

Those are both really nice edits with music!

To be honest I think some of the coolest shots are the old school, up close and personal, low angle, fish eye shots. To me, theirs just something cool about skiing being filmed kinda like skating and almost brings more of a chill vibe to it.

Filming with a setup like this, beside a rail or on the knuckle (maybe even from beside the takeoff) would give that kinda grungy, skate feel. just something I personally think looks sick!
