Never fly with emirates airlines with your skis

i purchased a flight from manchester to auckland for £450 one way, i was told skis would be free to take on, now ringing to confirm that before i fly in may, they have now changed policies and am looking at extra baggage charge of £800 to get my skis on the plane

i'm currently looking into freight to get my skis out there (anyone shipped skis to new zealand?)

what a joke of an airline company this is, could fuck up my summer plans this year for good

800 pounds? Wtf thats crazy expensive. Delta its like 50 and I thought that was bad...

I cannot believe that. Ring them again and speak to someone else just to make sure that the infomation you were given is correct. £800 is simply rediculous.

Even if the baggage policy has changed I would expect that the previous policy remains valid for your ticket given that you booked before the change.

i can just afford to get there, i wasn't expecting to fork out another 800 quid, messed my budget up but we have a plan

my brother is flying with me, one of us will take their 30kg allowance and put 3/4 pairs of skis in, the other will then have 15kg of each of our clothing

buy extra when we have jobs sorted in nz

Call in, speak to an advisor, be polite, but give em an ear full. DEMAND that you get it frree of charge as you purchased your ticket and they said it would be free.b

Yeah, flying with skis is a pain in the ass. If you're really tight for it, make sure you carry as much as possible as carry on. I have taken 30kg before, they rarely check. Also at most of the Heathrow terminals you check in oversize luggage at a separate location, in between the check in desk and the oversize bag point, just shove all your other stuff in there to lessen the load.

call in, i flew from heathrow to dubai 2 nights ago and it was free, they must of had a glitch in their system. give me a shout if u need somebody to call them from this end x

we spoke to 4 different people, 3 manchester branch and 1 from head office, it is 30kg allowance each including ski equipment

you can take golf bags for free though cause they are sporting goods

Not sure that's going to help in this case, unless positive thoughts can reduce the mass of objects.

semi related... never fly Copa Airlines with your skis.....

me and my buddy yall may know him as ismokeweed went to chile on copa, and were almost not allowed to bring our skis on the outbound flight (but were allowed on the return). their reasoning for this bullshit policy was that dem Panamanians tend to bring back their entire lives worth of luggage when traveling back to panama from the us. good thing we found that small fine printed online or else we would have been fucked. so this meant we had to go to the airport the day before our flight and persuade the check-in agents and make sure that we had special privileges. the cost was supposed to be $100 per bag, but they forgot about it on the way down there...

point being.. copa was a HUGE pain in the ass to deal with.

Me and my family took 3 pairs of skis to canada and it was free, they didnt even weight our bag on the way out! Are you carrying on your boots? that might take some weight away?

with corporations as big as this its a case of complaining endlessly, and asking to speak to the supervisor if you get in a stale mate, and continue with this until it gets to somebody high up enough to get pissed off you have wasted so much company time that they give in and give it to you for free or you end up talking to the ceo.

I learnt the hard way when i went to argentina in 06... now everytime i print off baggage allowance as of the date i book... Came in handy going to canada....

Seriously print off a copy of baggage allowance as per the date you boook.

southwest didn't charge me for skis or my clothes at all because the first two bags you check are free so i didn't even need to pay baggage fees when i went out west pretty sweet

Just came from zurich to auckland with emitates, same deal with extra baggage. An they wanted to charge me 650 swiss franks. I ended up putting my ski boots over my shoulder and put nearly 20kgs worth of shit into a dufflebag as my carryon. Was still a few kgs over but when i put my ski bag on the scales i ha half of it hanging over the end with my foot underneath which took about 5kgs off haha. Emirates is pretty good with there in flight meals and entertainment though, well worth the money.

Zurich to dubai i had them aroun my shoulders but duabii to sydney then auckland i was asked to put them in my carry on bag. I had no issues other than that

I usually travel with my boots as hand luggage and just a small carry on bag. You can though put the bindings in the carry on bag too, that way you only have to have the skis in your luggage which will cut down the weight allot. The boots and bindings are the heaviest part so if you can get them on board with you it will help allot. Good luck with it.

30kgs isn't too bad really, I did South America for 7 months last year, including skiing for 3 months, with 20kgs. Take loads of carry on and you'll be sweet.

another thing is to wear your ski jacket and just stuff everything you can into it but carry it to the desk on your carry on or whatever, just dont be stood at the desk with this jacket jam packed with all your shit then once passed the desk, just carry it. free carry on weight!!! (my friends did this on their way there and back to nz 2 years ago)

Put them in a golf transport bag, you can get some pretty large ones, big enough to fit your ski's in and then just say they are gold clubs

Give them an earful. That`s insane.

And definitely carry your boots on. If they give you shit, wear the boots and put your shoes in your bag - I`ve seen that done, and there`s not a thing they can do about it. Plus it knocks a decent amount off your weight allowance.

crikey!!!! buy ur skis a ticket for another 400 and order double drinks and if they tell u no tell em to piss off the skis are your slutty model conjoined twin girlfriends. thats y they are so skinny and stuck up.

I hope that you get it sorted. Be persistent but try to stay

polite.

I used emirates to fly to Auckland (from London) in 2010 and honestly I don't

think that I could have been more impressed (I didn’t take skis with me). My

girlfriend came back on some other airline and she only got 20kg checked

baggage and paid more for the ticket.

It sucks about the skis but 30kg (plus hand luggage) is

still 7-10kg more checked baggage than most airlines.

Sorry for the double post. Emirates might not have an established policy for ski carriage. As a starting point maybe you could show them another long distance airlines policy on ski carriage? If they take golf clubs and other sports equipment I can't imagine skis aren't too much more hassle. But in anycase I'd rather take skis and boots and buy clothing out there than the other way round.

If it doesn't work out make sure that you bring some bindings with you in your luggage it will save you some $ when you buy skis in new zealand.

30kgs is a lot man. How many skis are you bringing?

Wear your boots over your shoulder. Wear all the clothing that you are bringing that weighs the most.

I guess I'm not shocked that the official airline of the UAE doesn't value the importance of traveling with skis.
But if they changed policies on you, that's bullshit. Call them and make them make it right.

2 pairs for me and 2 for my bro, but it has to be one bag per person so gonna be awkward, probably means taking a lot less clothes than i would want but i'm starting to plan now

they offered to check another bag on for £105 for one pair of skis and poles

done this a few times. They get uber suspicious at security, but I always just tell them they are for ski bindings and they send em through with a confused look.

i recently took my glidecam through TSA in milwaukee and through denver.

I have never seen such a confused/suspicious look in my life

they had it tested and swabbed so many times
