Nelson, British Columbia

I've been thinking a lot about getting up to Nelson. I just started looking at information about the area but was hoping to gain some more from people who live there or around there.

Whats housing like? Moderately cheap, easy to come by?

Hows jobs? I'm a welder and that's about all I know other than skiing. How's work for welding up there.

And the big one, skiing. Whats the closest ski resorts to Nelson? Any good, easy to get to? How's the backcountry out there near Nelson and what time frame am I looking at to get from Nelson to backcountry or resorts?

Thanks.

I don't know how much work would be in the area for a welder, but it's close to Castlegar and they have flights to calgary, so if you make enough bank and work shift work it could be a viable option. Some jobs even pay travel, so look hard as fuck for one that does then you're set.

Hitch hike from town to Whitewater. And Slack country EVERYWHER. Red mountain is close by also.

Note: I don't actually live there, I just like the area and MIGHT spend the season out there.

And I think you might still be able to get early bird season passes, my buddys just got there's last week, it may have ended in October though??

White water and red are close to there i believe. Definitely a place i wanna check out. I've heard you have to be super careful in the backcountry round red because there's a load of open mine shafts that people fall down but that could be untrue.

I've got a load of friends who have been round there and they say it's sick!

nelson is pretty pricey for housing from what ive heard and not that easy to come by.

there really isnt much work at all for any trades in that area. you probably would have to travel. I live in whistler and PCL flys me up to Fort McMurray for 2 weeks at a time and then i come back to Whistler for my weeks off. Im an electrician. I work with a guy who lives just north of Nelson and PCL flys him out of Castlegar. I dunno if that would appeal to you but its defs an option.

You might be able to get a job in Nakusp with your welding skills building the new ferry. Beyond that I'm not too sure how many welding jobs are in the interior.

All of your other questions could be answered by using google. Check kijiji and ilovenelson for rentals, you can see for yourself what rentals cost.

For skiing, there is reason why nelson was voted as best ski town in north america from powder.

Thanks for the advice guys. I won't be leaving to go up there this year. Still dealing with a recovery for my surgery an some other stuff. Probably won't be for a year or two if at all. Guess I need to start looking for jobs and housing around that area before anything else.

im a red local and ski 100+ days a year there, and i've fallen in a mine shaft inbounds haha. theyre usually marked but it can happen.

to OP, look into jobs at Teck resources in Trail, they and their sub contractors hire lots of trades people at union wages ($$$$). If cant get on there or would rather do shift work, look into getting a job up north and ski on your 2 weeks off a month.

That's very important.

Nelson is a cool little town. I've never been there in the winter, but we have a house up the road(New Denver), so we were there a fair amount.

I wouldn't want to commute too far for work down there in the winter, the roads can get pretty dicey some days.

it's not that bad at all if you have a vehicle with winter tires and have a little experience driving in the snow.
