Need to upgrade to yosemite, will iphoto still work?

Hey guys, so my dad got a new Canon eos 7dmk2 the other day and it appears as if the raw files are not supported by our iMacs current Mavericks os.

So I have read a bit about iPhoto not working after upgrading to yosemite so I'm wondering if anyone know if this is true and if so what can I do to fix it? iPhoto is version 8.1.2 and I haven't found out any ways to upgrade it, I cant find iPhoto in app store and when I click search for upgrades inside iphoto it just sends me to a apple page that does not longer exist. Our mac is an iMac mid 2010 version 10.9.5.

A bit stupid question maybe but I'm scared to fuck up all our iPhoto library with well over 20k raw photos. Btw I have taken a time machine backup.

In advanced thanks, hopefully I can get some quick answers because the 7d mk2 is already starting to fill up the memory card so need to empty that soon..

I think it may have even happened when I updated to Mavericks, but my iphoto and imovie dont work. I never had used them but I was contemplating iphoto for photo organization before I did update. Happy I didnt. I did however talk to the folks at the apple store and said that I could reset my OS and it could possibly fix the issue with Iphoto. Im not sure if it is an issue with Apple IDs or not as I have changed since my original one I got back in 08'. Its definitely a toss up. hope that helps

Just get Ps or Lightroom.

Yeah thats what I use on my own computer but this is my dads mac and he just need something super simple. I think he just recently learned how to check his mail at home so I dont want to try learning him anything more advanced.

Anyways Yosemite is currently installing, I don't think iPhoto will work but if I have understood things right I will get a new program similar to iPhoto (iCloud photo library) and hopefully all the photos will be transferred over there more or less automatically. I think apple is killing iPhoto so hopefully this new program will be similar to use and just as simple.

Fuck, the installing bar have now been stuck at the same spot about halfway for 10 hours. Any ideas what I can do??

So I finally dared to shutdown the computer and when I restarted it went over the installing in one minute then the computer turned on with yosemite and everything seems to work properly.

The iPhoto app just have a cross over it and instead its this new app just called "photos", when I opened that I got a question if I wanted to import from the iphoto or aperture library so thats currently being done.
