Need subwoofer HELP!!

Im looking to get subs for my car, but I dont know whether I should get 2 10" subs or just one 12". If you can please help. Any suggestions
 
if you have the room in your car then the 2 10's but if room could be a problem the the 1 12 would be fine
 
if the subs are going to be in a trunk get 2 10s but if its in a suv or a wagon get the 12.

dont get 2 subs it will just sound like crap and take up trunk space as well as everything in your car will rattle, i would suggest either 1 12" or 1 15" depending on how much you want. Kicker L7's are the best made subs as well as being loud as fuck they are also so crisp, in my opinion.
 
guarantee you if I had two 10 inch subs I would hear NOTHING but bass. It would overpower the rest of my music.

I enjoy having some substance to my music (which a sub adds) but dont feel like being that douche that you can hear from 5 blocks away.
 
i have a 12, it will be cheaper and take less space. on sound alone though 2 10s will be better, so it depends how much more the two subs are and how much space you have.
 
what type of car do you have? I have a jetta and im running a 10" pioneer at 2100 watts, and let me tell you. it is plenty.I would recomend 10s cause they hit cleaner. if you can find a really nice 10 and run it at a high wattage do that. otherwise get one 12 over 2 10s. it would be cheaper and like someone else said, takes less space.

I guess I know nothing about subs. I have a 10" JL Audio in my trunk running at 300 watts and that sounds loud as shit to me when its up all the way...

why do you need 2100 watts?
 
are you kidding? what kind of sub do you have? I have never seen a single 10" sub rated for more than 800 w
 
My friend had a 12" alpine Type R hooked up to a 1600 watt amp with his Polk speakers on a separate 1600 watt amp. That one sub hit so fuckin hard. I was impressed. I know Type X's are supposed to be nasty. I'll probably be buying some subs too. My other friend has 2 10" kenwoods on a 600 watt amp and they don't hit harder than my car speakers alone. So basically you have to have a good amp backing the sub, and when I heard my friends 12" it was pretty sick.
 
ya a lot of people like the type r's, i had a type s 12 and it wasnt very loud and blew out. i now have a kenwood excelon 12 and its better for sure.
 
i have 2 pyle 10"s with a 500 watt amp and its a pretty good setup, nice and clean but doesnt really hit that hard, I want to get rid of them and get 1 alpine typr r but then id have to get an amp too. id say if you just want them to improve your system get 10s but if you want something to really bump to then get a 12. also depends on the vehicle, i have a jeep so they are right in the back but if they are going in a trunk you are gonna want something a little louder
 
i have one 12 alpine type r with an alpine m1000 amp in my ford explorer and its the perfect amount of bass for me, it still slumps super hard but its not over the top, i personally never have seen a good sounding bass setup with 10's, the 12 will be a lot cleaner and overall sound better, go for it
 
Don't listen to these fools. If you actually like to listen to music, and not just WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMPPPPPPPPPPPPPP and destroy your ear drums at a young age... ONE high quality 10" will be MORE than enough.

And to whoever said two for a surround sound effect is a fucking idiot. It's not a home theater, one sub is going to sound the same through out the car.
 
Not at all. A 12" is pushing it.

I have a high quality 8" under my seat in my XTerra and it's insane... However I also have a pretty insane amp and speakers... so that helps.

I have thought about putting another 8" in the FAR rear under the floor... so in larger vehicles I can see how two 8" would be appropriate. But in car, hardly.

There is a MASSIVE difference between having mega subwoofers and having an unbelievable quality soundSYSTEM... aka all working in unison. My sound system blows me away every time I get in my car, and I've had it for over a year. It rocks me to my core instead of just blasting my ears out.

To the OP, I would save your money and buy a 10". Spend the rest on other parts of your system... i.e. a better amp, and speakers etc.

 
If u do get a sub make sure u do your research on matching it with the perfect amp because if get the watts wrong or ohms and all that shit, your sub will sound like shit and you probably either blow it, or melt it. I would defenitly suggest getting a kicker l7 or l5, my bro has one and it is loud as fuck, but if u get a good quality amp it will most likely come with a bass adjuster knob so you can turn it down. So like in my bros car with the kicker l5 and a kicker amp, if you wanna blast some fucking insane beats and shake the shit out of your car and other surrounding you u can, but just get your bass knob mounted close to you and you can turn it down when you wanna listen to some chill reggae or something. One thing i also have to say about kicker is people always talk about getting big subs and they shake your car and sound like shit, but with my expierences with kicker they are really loud but are very very crisp and clear. you can also find them complete with every thing you need, ill post you some links.

majority of the people in this thread know nothing about car audio...

it really depends how much bass you want and what type of music you listen to. personally i love bass and i'd say man up and go with 2 12's with around a 500 rms rating and a 1000 rms amp bridged between the two. but if you think it'll be too crazy definitely go with the two 10's. again at least 500 rms would be ideal for a good bump but i'm sure you could settle with a little less.

and to everyone else, as long as you dont have stock door speakers you can hear the rest of the music just fine with two 12's going..
 
In a small car there's just no need for two 12" subs and an amp of that magnitude... Assuming he needs his ears for the next 60+ years.

I'm all about adding the amp... but WHYSOMUCH OF BOTH!?!

ALL HIS MUSIC WILL BE LIKE THIS EVEN AT A VOLUME LEVEL OF 3.

UNLESS HE DRIVES A 9 PASSENGER GMC SUV WITH AN EXTENDED CAB THAT'S JUST STUPID.

HIS SYSTEM WILL BE AS OBNOXIOUS AS TYPING IN ALL CAPS.

 
i have 1 10' in diamond audio sub with a 250 watt memphis audio amp in the hatch of my wagon. It slams, not going to lie, i only got one because i needed room and the less weight for me = better, due to having a performance car. 1 10 inch will give you enough bump, you're going to get sick of them at some point and not want that much base, go with 1 10 and ull have enough but not too much.
 
lol at the people in this thread saying one 10 can slap. I have two 12's in my F-150 with a 1500 watt amp and pioneer speakers all around, it slaps hard and i can still hear my music perfectly. same goes for my buddies burb, two 15's on 2000 watts and bose speakers all around, sounds just fine. everyone saying 8's and 10's are enough... no hate at all but get real, thats nothing.
 
Sorry, you're deaf and ruining your ear drums more if that's your opinion. Have fun in 20 years when you can't hear shit and it affects everything in your daily life. Your subs are shit or you have significant hearing loss already.

I have two 12" kenwoods from like 2005 with some old 2000watt amp from 2005 in a box in my subi. I have them pretty turned down and they bump pretty fucking hard.
 
nah dude your wrong on this one, your just being a pussy like come on man up and turn up the bass! in reality the damage to your ears from subwoofers isnt that sever due to the frequency of the sounds they make. subs hit so low that you wouldnt be able to hear that sound anywhere else but around subwoofers. your only damaging your ears from hearing bass! treble on the other hand and amped speakers...that can be dangerrrous

opinion is so invalid considering you think kicker makes the best sub. for op, rockford makes a bangin sub, but for less $$ ive heard good things about the alpine type R. their comp series, the type x is pretty fuckin legit too. id say they could hold their own with rockford p2s
 
damn, where did all this hostility come from? no my subs are not shit, i custom built my own box, ordered every part separately online, and put it all together myself. whats with all this unnecessary negativity, i was just telling you how I listen to MY music.

It all depends on what you're looking for out of your system. I run a Alpine 10" on a 600w amp in my Legacy GT, and Its perfect. Wouldn't ever use any more. I run the sub at like a -5 most of the time. Its all about getting a good balance in your setup. There's no point in throwing in anything 10"+ if you don't have the speakers to back it up.
 
dude, yeah super true it definitely all depends on what you got goin. I got 2 type r's on a 2400 watt amp and it fuckin kills, im not a super bump dude but that shizzle sounds good
 
I'm so fucking confused with this thread. I have ONE 10" sub in a ported box in my trunk. I've seen people turn around when I'm coming their way from like two blocks away when it's all the way up. I don't even enjoy it when its all the way up either, it just sounds bad.

Idk, I don't know much about subs though, I'm just really fucking confused as to why anyone would need 2 12" subs at like a fucking thousand watts. I'm running mine at 300 and that seems to be adequate.

300 watts is pretty low to push subs..i used to have a jl w3 12" in a bandpass built by jl for my sub, and i ran that at 800 watts
 
Please don't be the guy that throws down all his money on subs, EQs his bass up all the way and listens to shitty dubstep. Just don't.
 
I run a 12' 1000w sub from a 1400 amp, which is dialed down to match the sub, but I am much happier with the 4 6x9 JBL speakers and tweaters.

It's personal preference. If he wants to go big and loud, put 2 12's in but if he wants high quality bass he may aswell get a higher quality 12' or 10'. The extra loudness from having two will be minimal compared to the huge increase in quality from going a little smaller but higher quality.
 
Dude two Type r's would be insane. Personally, I think one is enough, but if you're really a fan of that back massage feel then go right ahead. haha.

but anyways to the questions.

What is the trunk space situation?

kinda obvious, if you can't fit the subs back there, why bother.

What kind of box do you want?

there are a couple types of boxes out there.

sealed-cheapest, used for tight accurate bass

ported-more expensive, deeper bass

bandpass-most expensive, combination of the two mentioned before

What kind of music will you be listening to?

this can also affect the box you get.

personally, i like metal/rock from a sealed box, and dubstep, and rap from a ported.

I haven't had a bandpass box, so i'm not going to talk outta my ass about them.

Have you replaced your head unit yet?

it'll be a pain in the ass if you have to wire an amp to a stock headunit (i'm pretty sure they don't have rca outputs).

Is money an issue?

you can put a cheap system in for 200, or go all out and spend a grand.

will you be installing this, or professionally done?

if this is your first venture into car sound, i would suggest either getting it professionally done, or with someone who knows what they are doing.

 
Trunk space isnt a lot but enough for 2 10" and then sum. Didnt really think about the box, but i listen to dubstep and rap, so probally ported or sealed. Yes i have replaced my head unit. I dont want to spend a lot of money but enough to get quality. And they will be professionally installed
 
I have a 12 in. in my suby. Shit hits hard. Youll be fine with just that, just make sure you get atleast a 1000 watt amp. Thats what really matters
 
Some guy just came into the car audio shop i work in and he's putting four 13.5 inch JL W7 in his trunk powered by a 10,000 watt kicker amp...

Yo just went with friend to get new sub for his car yesturday haha

Best way to go is one 12" with a closed box (as opposed to vented which will be louder but not as good quality). 10" is for pussys and 15" is just too much.

my friend picked up a 12" cerwin vega, box, amp, and inclding wires/labor it came out to just under 500. His car fucking bumps now.
 
I really think its all preference, sure one 10 slaps after moving up from stock, but once your used to two 12's it seems small. Also I have pioneer speakers in all 4 doors so I can still hear my music when the subs are flexin.
 
I mean if your stupid about the volume of your music than you will lose your hearing but even if you have a ridiculous system and are smart about how u turn it up and dont listen to it as loud as it can go all the time you will be fine, that is the main reason why they sell sub amps with bass adjusters so you dont always have it turned up all the way up. so if you wanted to get 2 12s and got a good quality amp that could be adjusted when you want to turn it down you really wont damage your hearing that much, i mean dont get me wrong your hearing wont be perfect but its not like your just gonna go deaf.
