first off if this has been asked before let me know and send me in that direction.

so im looking for a laptop to use for editing video and pics. main camera will be gopro hd3. not looking to spend a lot however. i dont know anything about computers amd im not sure what to look for. price wise id like to keep it under $500 if thats at all possible. also what editing programs would you all recommend.

thanks +k

For under $500 you're not going to get much. If you could extend your budget to like 8-900 you'd get much more. Look for a dedicated graphics card like the Nvidia Geforce GT630m. Acer V3 has one for $520 with a i3 and that. HP DV6 can be customized with the i3 and 630m or the amd A10/A8 with a dedicated amd graphics card. Check those out.Do you want 15 or 13 or 17 inch? You'll probably want a quad core processor, but it might not help if your editing program doesnt support rendering with all 4 cores. A dedicated graphics card is more for gaming, but can usually speed up rendering (its called gpu acceleration)

I just bought my self a new editing/gaming laptop so I've reasearched a fair amount. Mine was $550 with a AMD A10 APU with dedicated graphics, which works pretty well for gaming and editing.

HP Computers aren't known to be the best quality so you might want to get another brand but for $5-600 they have some pretty good deals. Just remember, the processor and graphics card matter the most. Get quad core and dedicated graphics if you can.

thanks a lot for the info. screen size isnt overly important to me. and price id like to stay close to that 500 or less. ill go pver a little bit, but i cant drop more the $600 on a laptop right now. cant afford to, nor do i think i need something like that. for the time being im just looking for something thats good. doesnt need to be great.

Okay have you ever used a 13 inch macbook pro or a 15 inch mbp? Which size do you like better the 13/14 inch or the larger 15 inch? For 14 inch you might get the HP DV4t-5100. It's $499 base but you'll want to get a $50 dedicated graphics card upgrade, the gt630m. Also you'd probably want a i5 which is another $50-100 bucks i think. Actually You might be able to just get away with a integrated graphics card with a i7 or i5 cpu on a lapotp if your not doing gaming, since editing uses the CPU more.Look around on amazon or wherever for what size laptop you want and see the options. 14 inch will be more portable but not as powerful as a 15 inch generally

i didnt realize the size of the screen had an effect on performance. ill keep that in mind. im still looking around, so maybe in the coming months i can put a bit more money into a laptop.

im going to bump this. parents might help me out with some cash for christmas, so lets call it $800 max. recommendations? again for the most part this will be used for editing only. no gaming at all.
