Need som tips on good backcountry sites in CA.

I'm going to San Francisco next week. My university have a field trip sort-off thing. And after all the meetings and excursions I have 5 days all to my selves. Coming from Norway I would like to check out your mountains, so I'm bringing my board and snowshoes.Does anybody have some good advice for cool backcountry sites? I like it steep:)

How's the conditions over there now? I suppose the slopes are crappy this time of year, but are there any places I can go with the board on my back?
 
mt telac, pyramid peak, castle peak. go ask about any of those at the backcountry in truckee. they could probably tell you a lot more places too.
 
The backcountry has gone to shit this season -

overnight temps have been in the low 40's and the muck has not been freezing - I skied little alaska between grouse and twin peaks on friday - and it was untracked 50-degree MUCK - about a foot of slush that slide out and sent wet slides down every face we touched - and this was at 930 in the morning -

Castlepeak - never good - maybe on a sled in mid winter - but not worth the approach

Tallac - sick with good snow - sucks right now - willows and gnar steams the whole way up the lower portion

Same for jake's Peak

I would recommend something up WAY high - maybe dow 395 near Tioga Pass or even near Whitney - but nothing near Tahoe is worth the effort right now

 
thebackcountry.com - I think that is their site - Mike at the Backcountry (Truckee/Tahoe City) has some awsome info on hikes, topo maps and has some legit advice and gear to rent -

I am a fan of theirs not an employee - one of the most core shops in Tahoe - all the guys their hike huge vert all winter long -

cheap rentals for avy gear, rando skis/skins etc...split boards -

 
Just go ride park at alpine, boreal or mammoth. This really isnt the time of year for backcountry.

but if you must red lakes area of of highway 88.
 
lotsa tracks on Tallac today, but the lower third is still all bushes and shit...

saw some nice mines off Elephants Back and Red Lake Peak today, that zone is still good down to the highway.

anyone know anything about Alien Ridge, above Crater Lake, it looks sick, but if you dont know where you're at it would be really easy to get cliffed out
 
Mt. Rose can be good for bc, it's higher up and gets some nice snow up there. Also Donnor pass (castle peak, like was already said) and the area backside of sugarbowl is fun. If you're willing to hike, there are lots of random places around Tahoe to go...but this time of year, with the season we've been having it's going to be pretty thin snow cover in a lot of areas.
