Need Opinions: Canon 55-250 IS vs. 70-300 IS

Currently I just have the stock lens with my T2i and I want to get a lens with better zooming capabilities for photos. there is a $350 difference in the two lenses and I have found out that the 300mm has a better IS motor in it along with greater zoom. I was wondering if anyone has had experience that would help to decide which lens is worth it or if anyone has any other suggestions for a good beginner telephoto lens.

I am looking to mostly shoot photos w the lens I get and do some video skiing but really not much.

also I looked into the tamron 70-300mm and was wondering how that compared to the canon model
