Need Help Learning Inverts

Hey. I've been skiing park for three or four years now and the best I can do in the air are 7's. I want to progress to better tricks, meaning backflips, frontflips, corks, flatspins, rodeos, misty's. But honestly I have no idea how to do any of these. So I need some help. I really don't know which would be the easiest to try first. I'm willing to commit to any trick, but I don't want to fuck up and land on my head or something. Problem is I don't have a trampoline and therefore don't have really many options to practice. I could possibly go to my friends house, and try some tricks (I have tried backflips on a tramp, got around, but never landed one). I don't really know if this is super-important or not to try tricks on a trampoline.

So pretty much my questions are:

1. Whats the easiest invert/cork to try first?

2. How do I do this trick? (size jump?)

3. Should I definitly practice before on a tramp or not necessary?

4. What are the risks of trying these tricks? - What happens if I do land on my head? - Nothing? Hurt my back? Paralysis? Die?

Thanks in advance for the help.

1. I would start by learning backflips, that's what I started with and it worked out pretty well for me. They're not that hard, compared to some of the other inverts you said you wanted to learn. 2. Backflips are pretty self expanatory. I mean, its a backflip-not that complicated. Just make sure that you get enough pop off of the lip of the jump, and you should be fine.3. I would definatly practice on a tramp first. That way you know how to do it and stomp it before you try it with skis on. Practicing on a tramp will help your self confidence as well (always a good thing!)4. Like any trick, there's always going to be a risk. Don't decide whether or not to try a trick because of the injuries that could result. Just go for it, give it your best shot, and you'll be fine. Good luck!

BACKFLIP

size of jump: 10-20 feet in powder if possible

Pop, thrust hips forward and lean back. If you can do backflips on a tramp or a diving board then you have the skills to do one on skis.

CORK 7

Size of jump: 25-30 feet, I learned mine on a 40 footer but you don't need that much to get it around.

Pop, start your spin like you're going to do a straight 7, and then look at your tails right after. Basically turn 90 degrees and then start going corked, or else you'll end up forcing it. These should not feel forced.

Rodeos and misties are pretty similar. I'd say a similar size of jump, 25-30 feet.

Misty: Pop off your toes, shoulder check the air in front of you, and pull your legs over your back.

Rodeo: Same thing, but pop off your heels and instead of rolling over your back, look hard over your leading shoulder.

Need any more?

...and tramps aren't that important. they just help you with the jump-spin-land technique so you don't start spinning or flipping too early or late. Helps you out with air sense and an off-axis motion of the body, too. The thing is, you're just going straight up and down on a tramp, you have no forward momentum. So it doesn't really work out to be the same motion.

I learned front flips before I learned 5s. But I can't even backflip yet. I think I am just stupid for learning fronties first. What gave me the confidence to try a front flip was learning to do them just off random stuff with my shoes on like pic nic tables and park benches. Backs are different I guess though. I need to try some this year since I can gainer into water.

Alright, thanks for the help so far

What about flatspins. Like where you kinda do a sideways barrel roll and then a 180 thing at the end. I see a lot of people do them. Those hard?

And theres no pow in NJ, so I'm on icy park jumps. Life-risking/paralysis danger or no?

I've landed on my head on flat ice, but maybe I was lucky. If you make it past half way through the invert then you should be safe from breaking your neck, you might just get roughed up a little.

i learned flatspin 5's first wicked fun trick....and dude dont worry abou the paralysis shit ahaha

dude! jsut did my first back last weekend. so here is how it went. built a med sized jump in the bc, into packed pow. i hit the jump, then built it up more, and the hit it and popped hrd. it felt doable, so i hucked it. the thing is, the fist time you basicly dont know whats going on. i could see a little white bfore i hit the jump, but i was so nervous i threw it back and didnt pop. i think i closed my eyes too. when i came down, apparently i almost got it but my tips dug in as i came around. so ejected and landed stomach first. the landing didnt give at all, so it really hurt. the scariest pain ive ever has. my back severly hurt and i got the wind totally knocked out of me. my back hurt really bad at first, and i didnt know if the pain was coming from my spine (but i really didnt go hard enough to hurt it) or just my musctles. anyway, i was ok and skied the rest of the day. so ill try another this weekend and let you know how it is. i write this because maybe it would be useful to know what it is like backfliping first try (at least for me). so ya, to let you know what i personally did first, i am working on my 3s and i had already tried linclns and fronts last season. so basicly, your def going to be used to being in the air more than i am, so itll be ok man! or maybe i just suck at spins, and so try flips more. whaever the case may be, try to do it into pow! the biggest thing i learned by far, hahah. so ya man, good luck, and pm me if you need more details... i guess... but maybe it would be better to learn from a pro (just thinking that the first experience may be freshure in my mine than in theres). so ya man, sorry about they typos, and hope this helped!

i seshed a tramp all summer just to get the motion right it hleped me a lot but its really not neccesary. my best advice is to know how the rotation feels get some pads and just go after it

two more things. i have a tramp. i can kinda do a bud cork, i can do kangs dub front, cork 9, backs, ect. so def comfterbole with that, for comparison sakes. also, well i forget (ADD!). anyway, dont think i needed to claim my first post, nothing sick mentiontioned. but may have to claim this one.

Claim/

triple post?and i remberd what else i was oing to say! about getting paralized.... have you broken any bones man? what im trying to say is, do you have week bones? i dont think its possible to broke your spine or anything into pow unless you have weak bones. and you will pro hurt some mustle somewhere trying your first invert even onto ice, but unless your weak, or are not nervous enough to over comit (which you should be) then you will be fine. hope all this helps!!11!1!!111!!!!!!

Thanks for the help everyone. I threw my first cork and backflip today.

Heres how it went:

I went for a three and ended up going way to big and overrotating throwing the biggest 540 of my life. So I got really stoked on that. So I went over to my mountains smaller jump, maybe 15 feet, pretty big jump, reasonable landing and not as icy as normal. I was just so stoked and I was feeling so good I just went for the cork 5. I got corked out pretty good and felt great in the air. I'm pretty sure I made the rotation and just landed on my side like most people do when learning corks but the person I was with didn't see me do so I got no third person input. But then I felt even better, having finally attempted a cork, my first non-normal spin. So I got back up to the jump again planning on trying another cork but I was like fuck it, I felt so great in the air and the jump was good, why not go for the backflip.

So I had the normal amount of speed going. I went off the lip, threw my arms up, leaned back, and pushed my hips up to the sky. The take-off felt really smooth and good and perfect as in the right amount of speed and everything. As I was taking off, all I could think of was holy shit I'm actually going to do this. Then being upside down was the weirdest feeling ever. I just remember like one image of looking down at the snow while being upside down and it was moving fast. And it was cloudy out and during dusk so all I saw was white.

So I definitly made the rotation. I defintily did not land, but I can't remember how exactly I fell. I think I under-rotated but I'm not sure. My skis did not come off so obviously I couldn't have underotated that much. I just remember kind off slidding down the hill. The fall was not hard at all. I had no pain at all. I was so stoked I just did that and a few people came up to me and was like that was fucking nuts cause I guess not too many people do backflips at my hill but whatever it felt great and I didn't try another one because I was so amped up and it was getting dark and crowded but it was great overall.

And I didn't mean to claim here, I know backflips aren't a big deal to most people, but if anyone was thinking of trying one, heres how mine felt.

Consider trying a misty 5 next time. I haven't tried corks or backflips, hopefully trying backflips soon, but I have tried misty 5s. Really simple rotation to set and you have ample time to spot your landing. Also every time I fell I basically slid out on my stomach, only thing to watch out for (if you under rotate like I did every time) is to not eject the ski into your face if you hand heavy on your tips.

Basically act as though your buckling a seat belt, or punching your left knee (if your spinning left), and drop your shoulder following your arm through. Make sure you pop well, my bigger problem was setting the forward flip momentum not the spin. Also since the way you throw it your hand is right there for the safety grab, which I started doing before I could land the misty as it seems to help you pull your rotation. Also keep looking through your shoulder you should be able to see the landing just after halfway through the trick. I practiced on like a 10-15ft jump, I'm sure something a bit bigger or poppier would've helped me get the full forward rotation.

props man, i love that feeling of landing somethings uve never tried before, one of the best feeling in the world, keep it up!
