I do a lot of AVCHD video editing and I have narrowed my laptop choice down to 2 and cant decide which one to get:

1) 15" Macbook Pro

Intel Core i5

4 GB Memory

320 GB Hard Drive 5400rpm

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256MB

2) 16.4" Vaio F Series

Intel® Core™ Quad i7-740QM processor

320 GB Hard Drive 7200 rpm

6 GB RAM

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 425M GPU (1GB VRAM)

thanks for the response, but if I decide to go with the Mac, wll the 4 gigs of RAM be enough to smoothly edit AVCHD?

I don't know much about editing but clearly the Sony's specs blow the Mac out of the water. I would head over to the Notebook Review forums and ax there, they'll tell you exactly what you need.

yes, for sure. and if eventually you decide you want more, buy new memory from apple and install it, not that hard. i put 2 gb of RAM into my 6 year old dell laptop and it runs faster than my dad's new laptop, i love it

based soley on specs, the sony seems a better option, i much prefer the PC platform, so its a pretty easy decision for me.

One is a mac and one is a PC. Decide what operating system you want to run and THEN look at hardware. Comparing these two is kinda pointless...

as geek squad/ apple product specialist at best buy, the mac book will run off a little less that what is required for windows7 and provide a laptop with longer battery life and better platform to edit vid/photos. Either laptop will do its job for what you are looking to do. With windows 7, unless you are editing movies 1+hrs at 1080p res, you wont really touch more than 4 gigs of mem usage.

I dunno but if i were you it would be the mac no brainer. i bought mine like 4 years ago and it still works perfectly, no viruses, no bullshit. I started using a sick sony vaio for my work a month ago and its already fucked up.
Macs just work better/easier, and their customer service is better, with PCs the operating system blames the hardware and the hardware blames the OS, that and if you get a warranty at future shop or wherever they fuck you over so hard they won't give you a new computer regardless of how fucked your computer is/unfixable.

It doesn't matter. Decide what operating system you want to run and THEN decide on a specific model. The only counter to this is what sometimes happens will someone will decide that they want to run OS10 but then they discover all the macs are too expensive for them, so then they have to back track and look at PC's. But a rule of thumb is FIRST decide on the operating system you want to run and then start looking at hardware.

this- I have never had an issue with a Mac- be it my personal computer, school, whatever- yet all the computers at my work that are PC's are replaced soo damn often or have to have IT come out and fix them
it comes down to what operating system you want

Ok, macs do get virus's just pointing that out.

Macs do have better stability, and offer better performance. However if you get a decent anti virus. IE. AVG you should be find the sony will be twice as fast as the mac. IF you are into filming and editing and doing more with video the mac very well be a better choice. what exactly are you using it for?
