Need help choosing a second car

Hi guys, I have a pickup right now, and the 15-mpg bums me out. I can't drive fast because Frontiers are slow as fuck and my gauge will visibly go down.... I want a fast car, preferably one of the American brands (Ford/Chevy) but you guys can suggest otherwise. Rob Ferreti (founder of Super Speeders) emailed me back the other day and suggested a V8 Mustang or Camaro.

Price is the only factor. If I work all summer I'll make ~$3000, which can grab me a shitty Camaro off of CL but I'm hesitant having never bought off there before. But I won't be able to make any mods to it as having no money left over. I want to be able to fix my car up to make it gnarly.

Suggest me a second car, V8 (I know mileage won't be great)!

Thanks in advance +K

Why do you want a V8? You complained about gas mileage then said you didn't care... Lol..

Save your money. You're not going to find anything worth driving and in decent/good condition with a V8 for $3,000

If you really want something else, maybe look at a cobalt ss. I have no idea how much they cost but they get much better gas milage than a v8, and there american made.

I'm typically in agreement with this statement, unless it's dealing with V8s and muscle cars. America does it best.

If you want good mileage and what not go with a camry or similar car...does it matter in the end what you're driving?

Im so confused. You want a second car cause your truck gets bad gas mileage. You're going to work your ass off all summer for $3000 so you can get a car with every so slightly better mileage. Then pay insurance on two vehicles on top of the $3000 you just spent for the car?

I have no idea how this is supposed to save you money. Keep your truck. Save $1000 in the bank and use it as a gas fund. Spend $2000 on a trip to Europe or 3 months in Thailand or something.

Fuck, this is horrible advice... Don't do this. A trip will be a week of fun where as building / restoring a classic American muscle car will be a lot of work but so worth it in the end. Especially if you have some buds who like to work on cars with you.

Honestly I am gonna suggest an 80sish camaro, they look sick as hell, are fast and not that expensive.

I'm in HS. Truck insurance is handled by my dad, second car, if I went through with it, would be handled by me. But that just makes buying another car an even bigger hassle.

I'm still waiting to here if I got a minimum wage job near where I live or if I got a 13/hr internship in DC, that'll change the scheme of things for sure.

Oh and I'm more mad that my truck is slow as fuck. Not sure where you got the mileage thing, I just said it bummed me out but to each their own

Sell your truck, save up money, buy something with a v6 and twin turbo like a dodge stealth or 300zx

I agree completely. Anything you spend $3k on will be shit or close to it...and restoring/modifying it will cost even more out of pocket. Either save the $ for stuff like badass ski gear or a halfway decent car, or go on a trip or two. Experiences are definitely better than things.

Get an h body late 90s gm car with the 3800 motor in it. They get upper 20s lower 30s mpg and have a lot of power. Best purchase I have ever made.

"Thanks for the tip, I'm starting to see that that's the case the more I research"

Reading. Huck Norris cannot haz.

Oh come on. The logic in the OP is terrible. "my v6 mileage sucks so I want a v8." Have a laugh! I could have said something actually shitty to you, y'know.

My truck gets 11 but you dont see me bitching....

But for reals, keep the truck and get a street legal motorcycle. Find and old 4 stroke, above 450cc's, 525 or 650 are preferred. Make it a supermoto and get your moto license. Problem solved

True but I can't haul ass with the v6 man. In a v8 I'd still get better than 15, what I get with the v6 now.

But yeah, I realize it and appreciate it mane

I dont know, but personally, I would rather have a supermoto than another type of bike. Its just a dirtbike with street tires and some other small mods essentially. The upright postion is easier to ride, and you can easily use it in rougher situations

This is excellent advice, but take the high road if you get a bike and take the courses. With every mofo out there texting and shit you really do need every advantage you can get.

Bikes are by far the best bang for the buck in cost, insurance, mileage, performance and fun... But they're fucking dangerous as hell man. Choose wisely.

Keep your truck and deal with it if its a pretty reliable truck for now. There is nothing you will get for 3000 that will be any good, unless you get that rare CL deal or from a family friend.

Why the fuck do you need a v8 car? A v6 is plenty quick enough for the most part. If your that strapped for money just use the car to get from A to B who cares what people think.

If you want a REAL sleeper, get a Buick Regal GS. Like many other Buick's it is supercharged and has 240 horsepower. Instant throttle response. The LS has less horsepower and less features. This is a great video that I highly suggest you watch. And if embed didn't work here's the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUrfIW4zQmM

get an old, beat-ass muscle car from the late 70s or 80s. thats about all you can do for 3 grand.

mid 80s monte carlo, ugly as fuck but a cheap old smallblock V8

actually just save your money.

well actually thats VW's engine in their older gtis and other cars. There are a lot of swaps you can find too

Fast (unless you have a track car) is bad especially when you are only in high school. My speeding tickets, points on my license, and high cost of insurance says so.

This is great hahah.

And if you go with a v8 in a fast car, your mpg will be virtually unchanged, because you'll decide to gun it and have fun with it.

And if you can save extra money, you can get a neon srt4 which hauls ass and gets good mpg considering it's 250+hp, and is a domestic

I have an 89 mustang with a 5L v8 and a 5speed. Can get em for around 3. It's fun as shit. Has a lot of kms on the body but a recent engine rebuild and new racing clutch. Has intake, exhaust and headers, so 270ish hp. So cool drifting clear corners in the rain, also fun to semi-race people/peel out at lights. I like it a lot and would recommend getting something similar. Gas mileage sucks (especially when you accelerate quickly), but I don't commute with it, so I don't notice it too much.

you should keep the truck. invest your money while you are young. a v8 car driven hard probably isn't going to have much better mileage than your truck.

sell your truck get a subaru on CL for like 2k (you'd be surprised what you can get) and pimp it the fuck out. good mpg and AWD for getting the mountain on those wintery days

yea, but from what OP said he really isn't looking for a muscle car. If he already has a car that gets 15 mpg and that "bums him out", why would he want another? Also a modern stock mustang v8 =/= muscle car. In fact from 2000-2009 it got between 300-305 hp. Thats less than a 4 cylinder sti, with a ton (not literally) more weight and less than great weight distribution. Real, modern american, don't-care-if-i-can-corner muscle cars are the new shelby's (662 hp) and the dodge viper srt (640 hp) and seeing as OP has a $3000 budget, hes not going to be looking at real muscle cars.

Maybe look at a street bike, you could probably find a 2009 kawasaki ninja 650r for close to $3000, and that has 0-60 of around 3.8, and gets 40 mpg on a bad day.
