Merry Christmas NS!

Just got a gopro and i need help with the best settings.

Format, programs to use, ect.

Any help k+++

720p 60fps. all day. unless you're just experimenting, 480p 120fps is really just a gimmick, you don't want to switch between 480 and 720 in an edit.

also, please do not film on anything under 60fps and use slo-mo. nobody likes choppy, frame by frame shots.

yeah, would be cool to dick around with, but i'd never want to film in it seriously because it's WVGA, hardly even HD. 720p is pretty much standard now, and most slomo is often overused and abused as it is.

ye if no slow mo what about 960 at 48 fps? played around with it at the house havent tried it skiing yet.

960p has a good aspect ratio for helmet cam shots. however, i highly advise you to keep a single size and aspect ratio when filming. 720p and 1080p have the same aspect ratios (16:9), so it's possible to film in 1080p and conform to 720p, making the footage look the same. why do it though, if you know you're making an edit in 720p? also never conform 720p to 1080p, you'll lose quality. don't even bother mixing 960p footage in there either, the different aspect ratio (4:3) will either put bars on the sides of the video (unconformed) or make the image short and fat (if you conform it).

TL;DR: you can film in 1080p and conform it to 720p, but not vice versa. don't mix 960p and 1080p or 720p footage.

720p60fps wins

I need help specifically uploading it to youtube. I can direct upload the raw clip with perfect quality but when i export it from an editing software (imovie.. havent tried with FCP yet) i loose so much quality. Any help?

it depends. i wouldn't recommend it for slow motion but if you don't plan on using slowmo then go ahead, it's a nicer picture obviously. my biggest pet peeve of videos is seeing a frame by frame slowmo that was like 30fps slowed down like 60 percent. so bad looking

im so confused what does adjusting the fps do? is a high fps better and what is the relation to fps to video quality. i just got one for christmas too.

http://www.squared5.com/

file> export to quicktime> apple intermediate codec> sound = uncompressed> 1280x720p HD> save> export

you can also play around with the settings and aspect ratios

also use it to compress to apple intermediate codec for raw footage before putting it into FCP

would these apply for an original go pro as well? i mean helmet hero hd, first generation (not gopro 2)??
that took a while to say

collectively? i personally wouldn't. the change in aspect ratios is weird. i mean you want an edit to be aesthetically pleasing, right?

but each on their own, well yeah they'd each be fine.

i heard if you boil it in some water it will automatically record everything in the best setting without you having to do anything....
